So, in short, Arcturus, the issue of wolf-dog hybrid ownership is tough enough (as the web site links I provided demonstrate). But WOLF ownership?? Bad idea. Totally. It should be left to professionals...who don't "own" them anyway. Selfishness? Where'd you get that? I already know what it takes to own a wolf, that I already know, your belief that owning wolves is wrong is terrible. I will tell you know, it's not that the wolves feel trap or anything of the short, my dad owned wolves and he loved them very much, and I know they loved him, and many things that can't be said in words. Wolves aren't dangerous to own, if your a rightfull owner of the wolf or wolves rather, How bout this let your mind grasp it if can Baltoseppala, can you think of a 230 pound wolf in strength most likely a aphla if in the wild, with a female alpha about 200 pounds so far a bad idea? how bout then slightly hungry over two babies? For about two hours what is the out come? It's that they just are happy panting over them and sniffing them, right above the babies my sisters. You may think that is wrong, but Buck and Sabrina raised from my father, where not trained trained, but raised by him. They never hurt anyone once. They never did anything wrong once, besides escape from home and walk around and return home without causing any harm to anyone. They aren't the hungry animal like animal at all, they know things they understand things. I'll tell you this a leesh doesn't work for a wolf or a choke colar. They know the grip is less by going the other way. They aren't that, they smart animals that understand. I know this is hard for any one to grasp and you Baltoseppala might be blasting my dad for his actions with wolves, he knows wolves, and he has a natural talent with them, my dad has something you can never have or even I. Wolves have something which you fail to see. Something you can never see, I don't think ever will, the bond between man and wolf. Do think wolves are just wild animals? That seems to be it. I know theres nothing wrong and your terrible belief is wrong, I know theres nothing wrong, and it's not a bad idea, you might think me and my dad are crazy or careless or heartless to wolves, I will tell you know, you will never half what I have about wolves, I see things I understand things you don't. From your point wolves should be left alone, which to extent short of need. I know theres nothing wrong, and wolves can be owned, and I can't say the words to prove you wrong Baltoseppala, I don't. I know wolves are not a wild animal. They can have human contact, as an owner, I know what it takes to own wolves and I will get them, even if it cost 1,000,000 dollars, and moving to Alaska or Cannada or buying my own land I will go any distance for them, so is that truely greed?, I will give a arm or leg, this isn't out greed Baltoseppala and I will tell you that and nothing will be as true as that. I'm sorry your blind to this whole thing, I know your point, in every place, but I know mine, and I know what I say is true as you think. My Truth vs your belief. That's what this is. I know it's ok to own one and for me it isn't out of greed, who's greedy the one who says no you can never half and it's a bad idea, or the one who will do pretty much do anything for them. I love wolves, and I know I love wolves more then you. You may say if you really loved them, you would leave them be. That is not true, I will tell you that. Well for you the saying "A man has to beleive in something even if it's not true, if he beleives it, it's true." You might think this goes agaisnt me, and short of does and it just as while goes agaisnt you. I know and you think you know, and from your point you know and I don't know. But I beleive this to my heart and my soul.
Are you going to go psycho on me again, Arcturus? Do you remember what happened last time?
I'm done discussing this. You have your beliefs, and if they comfort you, then fine. And if your father has found some LEGAL way to own wolves, then so be it. I don't care what you believe, they ARE wild animals, and it IS wrong to keep and own a wild animal. PERIOD. DONE with discussion.

That was my ending quote and is that some type of thing you have over me by our last little talk, I'm sorry your blind, my father did find a way as will I. That was my ending statement, your blind I'm not, you don't truely know what a wolf is.

Arcturus, you'd better learn real fast how to come to terms with the fact that other people have opinions. And that calling someone "blind", when in fact they have the backing of some pretty solid foundations and research, is ridiculous. You're not going to get very far in life, as you get older, if you behave this way.
I cannot possibly debate with someone who throws cheap insults and is incapable of backing up his arguments without one shred of evidence or foundation. As I said, I am done with this. Everyone's said their peace. Leave it alone.

Kangaroos. D'UH.
Heh, yeah. I love both of them, but wolves seem more. . . Powerful, in a sense, with more freedom, and they have a lot of meaning in paintings and pictures and the liek. A husky in a picture is just that. . . A husky in a picture.
SO YES. Wolves.

But I beleive this to my heart and my soul.
I, the "blind" man, who doesn't understand wolves and the question of wolf ownership, would like to offer the following additional information:
First, an e-mail to me from the Enforcement Division of the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife (from your HOME STATE, Arcturus), in which I posited the question of whether or not it is legal, in the State of Washington, for a private citizen to own a wolf:
From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Important question about wolves Date: Tue, 24 Oct 2006 12:12 PM
It is illegal for a private citizen to own a wolf due to their protected status. Someone can own a wolf-dog hybrid, but not a wolf. Thank you for your interest in this subject. WDFW Enforcement Division 360-902-2936 Dangerous Bear/Cougar & Poaching hotline 1-800-477-6224
THAT should resolve the matter fully. And it is the same in most of the member states of the United States of America (including Alaska). Unless your father is a state-licensed animal behaviorist or works in the field of wolf preservation and conservation, then he is committing an ILLEGAL ACT in the State of Washington by owning wolves (and even if he IS a licensed...whatever...he STILL could not "own" a wolf). There is no longer any point in arguing that. I'd suggest you pass that along to him. (I did not give the Enforcement Division of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife any of your membership information...so your privacy is protected. However, you should know that you and your family COULD be reported for this. I cannot imagine how your father doesn't understand that risk. Unless he actually owns wolf-dog hybrids...which is a different matter entirely).
You may view this as flaming, or some kind of attack, but you'd be wrong to think so. I'm actually trying to HELP you understand why you're wrong on this. And the risk you and your family is running. If I were interested in hurting you, I would have given your member information to that enfocement department, and believe me, they would have found you. And someone else easily could (as could anyone who happens by your home, and sees those wolves, and knows what to do and how to report it). But I didn't. Nor would I recommend anyone do that. Even despite how badly I feel for those wolves. They are now a hopeless case...since they've been acclimated to human contact, they can never be reintroduced to the wild. They'd never survive. No...now they belong in a wolf preserve or conservation center, where they can be cared for by a state-mandated and regulated system.
However, here is some additional information, courtesy of a "blind" man, who "will never understand wolves":

Well, understand this wolfgurly...I know that it is legal to own wolf-dog hybrids. And I don't think people are BAD for owning them. Nor was it ever my intent to come down on those who own wolf-dog hybrids. I just think it's a mistake. As one of those articles I linked shows, wolves mature at a different rate than domestic dogs, and they are fundamentally different animals. And those who breed wolf-dog hybrids must, by definition, have some wolves in their possession (or have access to them), which makes THEM wrong too.
Sure, canis lupus and canis familiaris are related animals...but they are genetically different. The ancestor of canis familiaris (the domestic dog in all its forms) was not a gray wolf (or its offshoots, the timber wolf and arctic wolf), nor a red wolf, nor a Mexican wolf...nor any other form of living wolf. Scientists have shown that the ancestor of the domestic dog was some other form of canid, which is likely now extinct.
So, while wolves and domestic dogs CAN successfully interbreed, because of genetic similarities, it doesn't necessarily follow that they SHOULD interbreed...or be interbred by humans. As I said earlier (and possibly elsewhere on this site), the ancestors of domestic dogs actually first sought out humans, in their primitive encampments, which led to the formation of a perpetual symbiotic relationship...almost no other wild animal on Earth has ever done that (except maybe certain vermin...i.e. rats, mice, cockroaches, ants...at least we domesticated rats and turned them into pets too). Wolves do not have that with humans, and shouldn't.

ugg...I took a short break away from the forum, not really thinking this thread would continue after what I and BaltoSeppala had posted...BUT, I suppose I was wrong. I cannot believe that so many of you think that you can legally own a wolf in the united states...just...stating this shows how much you know on the subject. I am not a professional on wolfs, but I do know that a wolf is a wild animal....they are not meant to be kept in captivity.
As for my opinion on owning a hybrid...I believe I have made that clear in my earlier posts on the subject...which not many of you seem to have taken the time to read.
BaltoSeppala, you have expressed the truth on this subject perfectly, and I completely agree with every word that you have said. As I said before...I’m not what you would call and expert on this, but I know enough to know that any wild animal does not belong with humans. Not only would they be miserable from being limited to roaming around in an enclosed space, but they could be a danger to there owner and to those around them...ok...to put it simple, THEY ARE WILD ANIMALS, THEY BELONG IN THE WILD, NOT IN CAPTIVITY...now please let this thread die.

Yeah, agreed Deimos. I'm not one for killing topics like this, but comparing wolves to huskies IS apples to oranges...as has been proven now. And this latest discussion needs to die before it gets any worse. And I fear it will continue to get worse...because "you can lead a horse to water, but...")

Baltoseppala don't replie because I don't want to discuss this anymore, Doug Seuss, he owns pure wolves and the wolves my dad had were pure, PURE I'm telling the truth about that, not lying, but we had to give them away so we gave them to Doug Seuss. My dad knew him in real life! Doug Seuss if you haven't heard of him well your bound to know anyway, when there's grizzly bear which he owns is often in films in White Fang, where my dad's wolves are, they are White Fangs mother, and Buck is the one that attacks Nathen Hawks neck, and his Grizzly is in that film, same with Snow dogs, his Grizzly bear is in it. He has wolves and the last time my dad cheecked with him which was a while, he had pure wolves with my dads pure wolves. So you can, call Doug Seuss and ask him, I"m not totally up to date but less then 20 years ago it was legal, to own pure wolves, look for Doug Seuss, and see yourself. Don't respound to this Baltoseppala because I won't respound to it. I'm not mad I'm not saying your wong, it's statement like a talk with a friend, go look your self .

I like both wolves and huskies. But since you don't have to have a license to own a husky, I prefer them. I do love wolves though, they are such beautiful creatures. If I could own a wolf and had everything to keep it happy, healthy and safe, then I would.
But I have my heart set on a Czechoslovakian Wolfdog.

Yeah, I found out about them in the giant Dog breed book I got for christmas last year. They need experienced handlers with a strong understanding of a dog's nature. There's also the Sarloos Wolfhound.. but I prefer the Czech.
