Outbreak (File #2 in particular) was a DISGRACE to the Resident Evil series. I never played suvivor or Zero, but from all the things I've read and heard, they aren't all that great.
So far, I think the best Resident Evil has to be the remake of the First.

Yeah, RE2 comes at a close second in my book. Have you ever played Resident Evil at night with surround sound? I watched my uncle play the first with surround sound -- and it was at night too. It's like you're playing as yourself in the game!! Sooooo creepy!! I almost had a heart attack with all the zombie moans that were in the room. 
You should try it!!

i have to hook up the console to the TV with surround b/c the PS2 is hooked up in my room, and i dont have surround up there

Never relle got scared in the Re series..i dont think i jumped much either....I expect alot of things to pop out so it dosnt throw me off lol.

Mine are the Hunters!! Both Hunter-Gammas (the ones than can swollow you whole) and the Hunter-Betas (the ones that decapitate you -- ugh). Their scream is pretty cool too...it's better than a zombie moan for that matter.
I love those creatures but my favorits are:
Nemesis
And the The final boss of RE2.
