Darn! Another idea out the window. I am appreciative of your feedback--and your knowledge of None and Alaska is incredible!

Don't worry-- I have a bunch of half-baked ideas floating in my head. Here's some more I thought of:

1) A story involving a lost gold mine (?)
2) The Return of Steele (plot somewhat inspired by "Aladdin and the Return of Jafar")--somehow Steele gets the town of Nome to turn against Balto as a plot for revenge.
3) A Balto and CALL OF THE WILD/WHITE FANG (by Jack London) crossover story?

Those offer some more plausible possibilities...

As to my knowledge of Nome and Alaska? Not flawless, but I have poured a great deal of energy and dedication into it, so thank you. :) It's what I am primarily able to offer to the fan community...whenever I'm not battling drama-laden nonsense started by teens and twenty-somethings with chips on their shoulders who love to pick fights with adults.

Another idea I had would be Balto going to New York City. The Balto statue was erected in Central Park 10 months after the serum run. The real Balto was there at the statue's dedication. That could be an interesting "fish out if water" type of story, with an Alaskan dog being in the big city.

Speaking of Balto and "fish out of water" stories...

Wait, wait, wait. Balto going to New York? What kind of idea was that? We need ideas for the sereis like prequels and sequels of the balto movies not silly ideas for something that might happen couple of decades later!

Well it did happen in the real Balto's life. I'm just saying it would be an interesting angle.

Baron's right, Balto was present when that statue was dedicated.

I could see some expansions on that too, although they would cross the line from historical events to artistic license. Possibilities like...

*Balto and/or other dogs with him get lost or possibly abducted.
*Balto et al befriend dogs in the NY area (looking at your fics, JC).
*Steele tries to mess things up (actually I read that the real Balto did get into a fight with another dog at the ceremony, so a renewed conflict with Steele could tie in there).

And, to reinforce Baron's response to this knee-jerk and bone-headed statement...

...Balto and Gunnar Kaasen (his musher in real life) were in New York's Central Park on December 17th, 1925. The same year as the serum run itself. (http://www.nycgovparks.org/parks/centralpark/monuments/75 and http://www.baltostruestory.net/monumentsmounts.htm)

THINK next time before you spout off. It wasn't "decades later". Decades later Balto was already dead.

I could see something with Steele. What better plan of revenge than to destroy Balto's reputation than at his own dedication?

How would you justify that character getting to New York, Baron? By the end of the Balto movie, he was an ostracized and disgraced dog...and by all appearances, his musher intended to retire him after the run. And if Steele performed so badly as he did during it, I would say that chance would only have been increased.

It doesn't seem reasonable that Steele would have gone with the team to New York...or anywhere else.

That is true--then again it is a fictionalized world. Was a memorial/statue set up in Nome for Balto? I'm trying to limit the antagonists to dogs and/or wolves. It wouldn't necessary work to have a human antagonist...or would it?

You may wish to read my crossover tutorial in the various fan fiction/gamebook topic boards. Key concept? Even in fictional worlds, there needs to be a certain degree of plausibility. If Steele, for instance, didn't go with the team to New York, then did he just magically pop into Central Park from Nome? Did Scotty beam him there? I think you get the idea. Clearly not. So...how? And why?

To wit: http://www.animationsource.org/board/what-makes-a-good-crossover-t33319.html

As to monuments or memorials to Balto in Nome? Definitely not. After the serum run (and I mean even just after it), Balto and his musher, Gunnar Kaasen, were mired in controversy over Kaasen's decision to bypass the last intended musher in the relay (while he slept in one of the roadhouses) while he pressed on the last twenty-some-odd miles to Nome.

No monuments were ever erected in Nome to the serum run participants...canine or human. Though there are modern-day brass plaques on concrete pillars commemorating various aspects of Nome's history along Front Street, it's main business thoroughfare.

That's assuming he was an invited guest. Depending on how they got to New York, it's possible he could have stowed away.

When you say "stowed away", you mean ship stowaway? It could work... I don't know if there was a viable air service between New York and Alaska by then. The ship could work because the Panama Canal opened in 1914, I think. As for traveling by rail, I don't have any info on that. From the movie, the serum was delivered by rail to Nenana, but I don't know if they could travel to New York solely by rail all the way to Alaska.

Baron: yeah, "stowed away" doesn't cut it. The realistic course, back then, would have been to catch a ship out of either Nome or even traveling by land across to Nenana (and then catching the train down to Anchorage, and then on to Seward), or overland down to Seward southeast from Nome (a much longer process). In Seward, a ship would take one further south to Seattle, whereupon a person (or group) would catch a train going east. THAT was the method.

A random dog stowing away on a passenger train? Essentially impossible. Even back then.
