Epona suddenly reared, her nostrils flaring in fright as her eyes shown only white. It took all of Link's strength to simply hold on, his thighs gripping the poor beast so hard until they felt like fire as his beloved horse's flank and saddle became increasingly slippery from a combination between her own sweat and his. He also felt his own chest tighten as his passenger's grip around his torso increased as well.

Zelda's eyes squeezed shut as she fought back the urge to scream, biting her tongue nearly in two in the process. Blood trickled down from her lips with the occational gush as she gurgling moaned from the pain and jarring, staining both her and Link's tunic. Her grip around her champion's waist increased a hundred fold.

Midna suddenly slipped out from within Link's shadow. "Okay, time to go!" she yelled over the fray. With a snap of her fingers, horse and Hylians disentigrated into black pixels before being absorved into Midna's shadow. Satisfied that her companions were now safe, she quickly flew upwards towards Samus's ship.

***
Link slowly lifted himself off the ground, his head throbbing. After a few moments, he slowly opened his eyes...or at least he thought he did. What he saw -or didn't see- made no distinction between eyes being open or not. Heavy labored breathing met his sensitive elf-like ears; he slowly made his way over to where his terrified horse lay, groping lightly until he found her neck; Link then laid across it, pinning Epona's neck. When the massive horse tried to throw him off, writhing underneath, Link quickly tugged off his gauntlets with his teeth before slipping them into his pouch, and laid his bare hands soothingly against her face, brushing her mane from her eyes. "Hush hush, old friend. It's me. You'll be alright. Steady, steady..."

Zelda quickly spat out a glob of clotting blood and saliva from her mouth, not caring about being "undignified" at the moment. Light bluish green aura surrounded her hand as she carefully extended her injured tongue to heal it, casting a faint glow around her face.

Link recognized the glow as Zelda's healing magic, and his brain quickly processed that he'd have to do the talking at the moment. "Midna!" he called out into the inky blackness. "Let us out! Epona's having a stress attack!"

"To where, exactly, Wolf's-Breath? If you haven't noticed, there's nowhere to go!" Midna retorted sarcastically, her voice echoing omnisously around the hidden walls of her mind. "No, you'll stay there. At least until we reach solid ground again."

Link heaved a heavy sigh. "Fine. But don't keep us in here for too long; you said yourself that it's dangerous for both parties."

***
Yoshi glanced out the windo groggily, rudely interrupted from his nap by the commotion. Suddenly, a small figure raced by one wing, a backwards-commet's tail leading with a neon orange grabble-shapped object whipping in front of it. Yoshi immediatly began prodding both Peach and Mario wildly, desperately gesturing for them to look out the window.

Peach irritably shook the green dino off her arm. "Ew! Go away! I don't have time for you!" she sniffed before directing her attention back towards the red plummer.

Yoshi's eyes narrowed in frustration. "Yavshi, Yabbi!" he cried, tugging on their arms while dancing from one foot to the other, desparate to grab their attention. Oi! Humans were so dense!

***
Outside, Midna struggled to gain enough speed to fight the head wind created by the craft and pace it. She strained to make her hair extend further, the glowing orange ends balling into a fist as she began to beat on the reinforced windows. "Oi! Hey! Let me in!" she bellowed in desperation, her voice nearly lost to the wind.

Samus openned the port as the "break up" stabilized, distinct chunks of the planet floating around the core of the planet. "I've seen planets explode... A lot, this isn't a destroyed planet..."

Spyro floated up, looking and seeing gravity and everything was still in place, nothing had changed except for the floating pieces of the world. "What's going on? How can this happen?"

Suddenly, a massive hologram filled the sky, one above each continant in full view of all their inhabitants, of the Dark Emperor. "Hello, Smashers."

"That's him! That's the one who attacked us!" exclaimed Spyro, shocked.

Samus growled, looking at the face of their enemy. "He must've done this!"

Midna quickly slipped through the crack as the port opened before collapsing onto the ship's floor, breathing heavily. Already she could feel her energy being sapped from her along with other side effects as she maintained the spell that kept her friends within the inter-dimension pocket with her Twili magic. Shouts roused her from the floor and drove her towards the cockpit; Lord Shiney-Pants had made an appearance.

"Well hello, Lord Shiney-Pants," Midna replied sarcastically, not really caring whether or not the Dark Emperor could hear her.

Peach gave a small cry of surprise as the projection suddenly appeared in front of them. She narrowed her eyes in scrutiny -he didn't seem all that strong, hiding behind black armor with an almost ridiculously long cape. But then again, she knew from experience that looks could be deceiving. If this creep was the one that blasted the dragons... She already had to resist the urge to flee and ignore her cold feet.

Yoshi peered down at the ground through the window and squeaked with shock at the sight below him. The planet's crust drifted drifted in chunks in mid air above a molten core. Occasionally, Yoshi caught a glimpse of a molten sea of lava through the cracks, and nearly tumbled from his seat when the "sea's" tide rose, causing a brief molten geyser to shoot through in a haphazard arch before lowering miles below the new surface again. The green Dino slowly dragged his trembling half off the floor and reseated, careful not watch to closely again.

"Hello heroes of this world, I am the Dark Emperor. In case you haven't noticed, I've divided your world into pieces, well me and my friends," the Dark Emperor explained, the image showing the large assembly of villains. "We have watched you defeat the forces of evil again and again, getting your sweet happy endings while we fall dramatically off cliffs, get impaled, or otherwise lose in an overly eleborate fashion. And quite frankly, we're sick and tired of it!"

The Dark Emperor chuckled. "So we've decided this time, we're going to get our own happy ending, and you are the ones who shall lose this time!" he stated, his visor lighting up. "Heroes, if you want a happy ending this time, you're going to have to earn it!" he stated, giving a picture perfect evil laugh before the projection vanished.

"Well...that was different," Midna commented. "I thought he'd say something like 'world domination and have everyone think like him', but if that's his reason... I don't know. It seems petty." She then exhaled an annoyed sigh. "And even if we manage to beat his sorry self, is it even possible to restore this place? Man, I hate villains!" she seethed.

"Uh-umm...are we almost th-there?" Peach trembled.

"I'm not sure where 'there' is right now," said Samus, looking around. "But there's probably a hidden agenda in all this," she stated, not trusting the guy as far as she could throw him. "As for fixing the place, planetary breakups like this normally have some kind of failsafe to put them back together, like Spyro, Sonic, and Fox's worlds, we just need to find it somewhere."

"And we still need to rescue Cynder," said Spyro, landing on the ship to conserve energy. "Maybe we should split up."

Midna nodded, groaning her characteristic sigh. "Well, I suppose that's how it is then, but don't come whining to me if that creep tries to ambush again!"

"Maybe, but I don't think we all could beat him anyways," the Mushroom Princess reminded the imp. "And don't worry, Spyro; we'll find her. The good guys always win...and live happily ever after!" At this, Peach twirled slightly and giggled. As far as Peach was concerned, three things were constant: mushrooms made heroes strong, Bowser would try to kidnap her, and the good guys always won.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah, but I still don't think it's the most brilliant idea," the Twili muttered, interrupting the blonde's positive thoughts and earning a glare cast in her direction. "So, how should we split then?" 'Please, please, please don't send me with Peach!'

OOC: Samus, Mario, Peach, and Yoshi are in the ship. Spyro landed on the ship, and so did Midna. Link, Zelda, and Epona are in Midna's weird "inter-dimentional-pocket-thingy" (yeah...huge creative liberty there, but how else did she cart around bridges, volcanic boulders, and all Link's gear?). I still plan on bringing Pit in eventually though. Is Kirby still part of the plot?

"Alright, we should split up. The group of us with the ship should go searching for the way to put the planet back together," said Samus. "Another group should go with Spyro to help him locate Cynder. Defeating her freed her the first time, so the same should happen again," she continued. "And if it doesn't, she'll just turn into a trophy and we can find a way to turn her back," she said, thinking about it. Mario, Peach, Yoshi, you come with me to look for a way to fix the planet, Midna, you, Link, and Zelda go with Spyro to locate Cynder. That sound like a good idea?"

Midna gave a curt nod in response. It still wasn't perfect, but then again, few things ever were. And, at least she didn't have to spend one more second with that loudmouth of a princess -the imp wasn't sure whether to feel admiration for the red plumber or further annoyance for being able to tolerate Peach. "Wolf's Breath and Queeny need a chance to stretch their legs, not to mention Epona," Midna finally commented with a shrug.

With a giggle, she flitted through the air towards where Spyro had landed on one of the ship's wings, dematerialized, and materialized on the other side of the wall easily before landing hard on the purple dragon's back. "Come on, Hero! You've got a 'damsel in distress' and a world to save...again!"

***

Once Midna was "safely" on the other side, Peach heaved a side of relief before seizing Mario's arm and squealing faintly in excitement. It certainly was a change of pace to be on the side doing the saving, and she was determined to absorb every moment of it!

Yoshi merely glanced at his supposed "team" with boredom before yawning and finding a spot to curl up on the floor. It looked like they'd be stuck on the ship for awhile; might as well try to nap while he still could. "Yavi Yoshi," ["Works for me."] he mumbled before squeezing his eyelids shut.

Spyro landed with Midna and company. "I suggest we head towards the Dragon Realms part of the world," he explained, thinking the situation out as best he could given what it was. "Cynder will likely had back there, or at least that's our only lead at all."

-------------

Mario smiled to Peach, then looked to Samus.

"Alright," Samus said, thinking about the situation. "I suggest we look for any ruins or the like, ancient ones," she continued. "Do you know of any?"

Midna nodded. "It's a start, at least, and that creep seems to have some weird sort of vendetta against the two of you," she replied before shrugging nonchalantly. "Hold that thought." The imp then drifted away a few feet, her fists clenched and muscles tight as if whatever she was attempting took a significant amount of effort.

"Nnnnnnn...eeeYAAAAAH!"

Moments later, three figures materialized: Epona, still on her side with Link attempting to sooth her, and Zelda a few paces away from horse and rider. "Welcome back, Wolf's Breath!" she greeted cheerily.

***

"Shhhhh Epona, it's alright. Just me an' the Princess," Link murmured to his beloved horse soothingly, momentarily slipping back into his Ordonian accent. Suddenly, their blackened sky began to separate into what looked like enlarged, rotating pixels as golden light began to shine through the disintegrating barrier. But as soon as it started, it stopped, leaving only the blinding light. Thy Hyllian hero winced, blinking as his eyes adjusted to the new light. Gingerly he reopened them, only to be met by an imp way past the invisible line he drew for his personal space. "Augh!!!"

"Welcome back, Wolf's Breath! A little 'thank you, most mighty Midna' would do, but I almost like this reaction better! Eeeheeheehee!"

Link rolled his eyes as he tried to ignore the drumming in his temples. "But do you always have to do that?" he muttered. "Never mind; forget I asked."

Zelda blinked slowly as the sights and sounds of her new surroundings came into focus; already, she could pick out the heated argument between Link and Midna. 'Good, those two must be fine then.'

"Midna."

Midna glanced behind her. "Eh? What's up, Princess?"

"Fill us in, important details only," Zelda commanded, struggling with the same headache as Link, but she knew from experience that it would be gone soon; no point voicing any complaints.

"Mr. Big, Black, and Shiny broke apart the planet, and Samus decided to split us into teams. We're with Spyro; the others are with her, currently," Midna replied automatically.

"And Link, how's Epona?"

"Better, now that she's on something solid. Don't worry, she's been through a lot worse," Link replied, quickly straitening and brushing off his green tunic.

Zelda nodded slowly before turning her attention to Spyro. "I apologize about the delay, but it appears that we are all ready now."

***

The Mushroom Princess thought a moment. "This place has changed a lot since last year, what with the new worlds added and all. But there were still some places that had nothing to do with our world...maybe someplace like that? Those places must have been here before the Smash Mansion was ever built..." Peach glanced at Mario uncertainly.

Spyro nodded, looking out into the distance, feeling his homeland calling to him from across the world. "Alright, the Dragon Realms aren't that far off from here," he said, looking back to the group with him. "So we should be able to reach them quickly. That's assuming the Emperor doesn't attack us on the way. I don't know what he'll be planning, but if he shows up himself, we run, understood? We're no match for him, and Zelda saw what his attack did to me AFTER I recovered from being a trophy."

----------------

Samus nodded, planning where to head next. "Alright..." she said, looking over a map of the world. "There's still that subspace portal were the Island of the Ancient used to be, I hope it wasn't one. But there are a few places...I'm getting an abnormal energy reading from this location here," she said, pointing it out on the map, looks to be some abnormal energy signature. Should we go?"

Peach shrugged. "That sounds like as good a place to start as any," she replied.

***

Zelda winced. "No need to remind me."

"Hey, hey! I saw what happened too; no way I'm going anywhere near that guy if I can help it!" Midna retorted indignantly. "And you better not either, Wolfie. That guys seriously something else."

Link slowly nodded. He still didn't like it; being the bearer of the Triforce of Courage made him prone to wanting to tackle obstacles head-on, but even he could see there was no ground to be gained in starting the manhunt prematurely, and especially not without some sort of strategy. "Let's get going then."

With that, the swordsman helped his princess mount Epona before swinging his body over the saddle himself and urging the horse to a trot, allowing Spyro to set the pace.
