A man walked along a linoleum floored hallway, gingerly carrying a sealed and well insulated case containing a bar of nuclear power. He was heading towards the generators to insert the pulsing power source, initiating the ability to harvest more power. This was the newest development, it was stronger and lasted longer, and he, the man who used to be invisible, was entrusted with it. Lost in his thoughts of glory, he didn’t notice he was walking by the rotunda that encircled the large furnace specially adapted to burn the nuclear waste until the heat hit his face, fogging up his horn rimmed glasses.

He stopped beside it, staring into the flickering depths, once again lost in the swirl of thought. His grip slackened as he relaxed his tight hold on the silver case. He pulled himself out of his trance as the case started to slide out of his hand, and regained his grip before it slid out into the flames. Sighing with relief, he backed up a step, wiping his forehead with his free hand. He stared at the flames, his gaze now untrustworthy. Still overcome with relief, he stumbled on the fringe of his lab coat as he began to walk towards the room, still near the furnace. His mouth a perfect O, the case slipped out of his grasp, and into the furnace. The flames glowed purple, and he leapt up, pulling the alarm.

Klaxon sirens sounded the evacuation, and he hurried to leave the room. The building was going into lockdown. Struggling to reach the exit before his quadrant of the building was closed off, he tripped. He hit the floor hard, and lay there, stunned for a moment. He heard a dull clang as his section was closed off. So much for escaping before the building exploded. At least everyone else made it, he thought. He pulled himself close to the wall, noxious fumes of multi-colored smoke spewing out. He curled into a ball, covering his hands, his glasses askew on his sweaty and clenched face. He awaited the inevitable explosion, the one that would end his career. And his life. He trembled as he thought of his family, his life literally flashing before his eyes.

Then his stream of self-torturing thoughts ended as the large BOOM filled the room and the nearby and distant areas surrounding the facility. The building disappeared in a nova of raw energy, a nuclear mushroom cloud of flame, smoke, and shrapnel lingering. A crowd of men and women stared at the building, shock and sorrow clear on their faces. The man who had saved them by pulling the alarm would not be forgotten. For different reasons. He was the man who changed the human race.

The legend of Legend

Part one

The wolf saw only through his right eye. The other one was blind. He looked through his one good eye at the world. He wished his sight hadn’t gone in that one eye. He wished he could see, but he couldn’t.
“Legend! Legend! Come here, wolf!” the voice snapped him back into reality. He ran over to the voice that called him. His Alpha, his father, Barwolf called.
“Yes, father?” he asked, slightly scared. He lowered his head and tail, making himself look submissive.
“Go fetch a hare or two for your mother to eat. She’s not doing too well after that elk hunt.” Barwolf commanded. Legend ran off into the hunting grounds as soon as he heard the words.

Legend sniffed the air, and found a scent. He pounced on the trail of the rabbit, and followed it until he found a hare. He killed it quickly and brought it back to the den, running. His mother hadn’t been doing well lately. An elk had kicked her, and possibly broken a rib or two when she tried to hunt it. She had misjudged it for a weak elk, when it was strong. He knew what it felt like to be barely alive. He had gotten ripped to shreds by another wolf once. He was now a year old, and that happened when he was about nine moons old, but the terror was still there, every time he cut his paw on a rock, or saw a lone wolf. He missed his sister too. His dear sister, who had died when the wolf attacked him, the wolf had somehow gotten around him and killed his sister, even though legend had tried with all his strength to save his twin. She had been guarding the camp, and he had been sleeping. I should have stayed awake, I should have been killed, he kept thinking, and every thought he had like that was like being torn up all over again, like a strong punch to the stomach. Finally, he was at the den. He dropped the carcass in front of his mother. “Eat, mom, eat. You will die if you don’t.” he said, and then left.

Legend headed towards the waterfall now. Near where his sister was buried. He went to the grave, trying not to cry, trying to be strong. He couldn’t go it though, he broke down and sobbed. He lay next to the rock that marked the grave, feeling almost exactly the same as when he did the day she died, like it was his fault. He put his paws over his face, and then sat straight up, perking his ears. He had heard a sound off in the distance.
Legend ran over to the den, as fast as he could, knowing what he had heard was real, real danger. “Intruders!” he barked, “Wolves from another pack! They come to destroy us!” he knew they would be, you never trust another wolf pack, and at least not when they come straight into your territory. He panted after running all the way from the waterfall, about a mile’s run. He collapsed onto the ground, panting still. Then, he got back up, and growled. He narrowed his eyes, and charged straight to where the sound came from. He wouldn’t let another one of his family get killed. He closed his left eye, the blind one. He opened it again. He had been trying that for years, but it never worked. He had some hope that one day when he opened it again, he would be able to see, but he never could, and he knew that. He knew that like the territory of his pack, like the back of his paw, but he always thought there was no hurt in trying. Never was there a hurt in trying. Never. He ran across the ground, fur pushed back like there was a strong wind in his face. Like a hurricane. He growled, still as he thought of his twin sister. He narrowed his eyes and jumped ahead, and started running again with a burst of speed. His claws sunk into the ground, and ripped up little bits of dirt and grass, like cleats. He accidentally stepped into a hole in the ground though, and fell down, on his muzzle, and rolled over onto his back. His nose was bleeding, and so was his right front paw. There had been a rock and other sharp things in the hole. And he had landed on his nose. He didn’t care though. He tried to get up, but his leg buckled out from under him as soon as he stood up. He couldn’t go on. He knew it. He still tried though, with all his strength. He heard a voice in his head, his twin’s. Don’t give up, Legend. Be a good brother, protect the pack. She seemed to say. I will, Tala, Legend answered. He struggled to get up, and he did. He ignored the extreme pain he was in. He walked on.

When he saw the enemy wolves, he growled loudly, and slipped out into the clearing they were in. He flattened his ears, and they immediately tried to tease him, as if that would make him go away. “Hey, that pack is weak. They sent that to defeat us!”
Legend growled back, “At least I’m no coward, sneaking into other’s territories, trying to scare off the protector of the pack!” The wolves stopped talking then, and looked at each other in surprise, and then the leader of the group stepped forward.
“We are not cowards. If you weren’t a coward, you would defend you territory, not stand and growl. Our weakest wolf could kill you.” the leader said. His scarred head looked so familiar to Legend, so very, very familiar.
“I will then. Send the weakest, I will fight them. Send the strongest. I will fight them.” Legend growled back, trying to sound brave, for his twin, for his pack. He also added, “And I am blind. If I beat either of the wolves, or both, you have to leave. If I fail… if I fail, you will be able to tear my pack apart, one by one.” legend was ready to fight. If it came down to it, he would. A wolf stepped forward, a weak looking one.
“You will fight the weakest first, and if you win, you will fight the strongest. Me.” the leader snarled, “But, I doubt you will last three seconds against the weakling.” the weaker wolf smiled, and ran his tongue over his teeth.
“Let the fight begin!” Legend shouted, and jumped in and snapped at the wolf’s paw. The wolf dodged the attack, but he slipped up a little. Legend took this chance and snapped at the wolf’s ear, ripping off a piece. The wolf yelped in surprise, and then bit Legend’s already bleeding paw, tearing it open even more. He yelped loudly, and then slashed at the other wolf’s face with his other paw. He looked down at the weak wolf with his good eye, and his bad eye. “Are you ready to lose?” he asked the wolf, “Well? Are you? I would get ready to!” but while he said that, the wolf snapped at him again, hurting his paw more. He growled, and leaped over to the side of the wolf, and feinted like he was going to bite the wolf’s leg, but he retreated and bit the wolf on the neck. He let the wolf go when he gave in. “Ready to fight, strong one?” he asked.
“Fine.” the leader, the strong wolf, stepped forwards, “I’ll fight you. Get ready, set,” he leaped forwards, bit Legend’s paw and then added slyly, “go…!”
Legend leaped back in surprise, yelping a bit, but then he was furious. He ripped at the other wolf’s body, tearing him up. They fought for a few more minutes after that.

“Goodbye. Now leave.” Legend commanded the wolves of the enemy pack, as their leader and weakling stood up. He made sure they left, watching them until they were out of sight, and then he waited a bit longer. He headed home.

“Legend?! What happened?!” Barwolf exclaimed.
“I told you, and enemy pack came. I defeated their leader.” Legend replied, matter of factly. “You’re welcome, dad.” he said, and then went to where his mom lay, whimpering. “Mom,” he whispered, “did you eat yet?”
“No…” she moaned. Legend slipped beside her and laid his head on her side, like he used to when he was a tiny pup.
“It’ll be ok, mom. Really, it will.” Legend said quietly, trying to calm her down. “Don’t worry about me either. I just chased off a pack, that’s all. I won this time, too. I didn’t lose.” Then he stood up and left, after his mother went to sleep. He wandered off to the waterfall area. He lay down in the river, cleaning his fur, getting the redness from the fight out, and also healing his cuts and wounds. He climbed onto the bank after that, and snuck behind the waterfall to his den. The den of the Guard of the pack, the one who made sure everyone was safe. He went to sleep there, and soon night fell, and he woke up. He patrolled the boundaries by night, and fought by day, too. He slept whenever he could. He then went off to find a piece of prey to eat. He hadn’t eaten since yesterday.

After he was finally done doing his job as the Guard, he slept. A good sleep, for a light sleeper. He had his ears perked, ready for any sound he could hear. He was ready to fight, if he needed to. He dreamt of his sister, and the night that it had happened on, and he suddenly remembered the face. In his dream, a sound like a lightning bolt strike sounded, and he saw the face of the leader, snarling at him on that horrible night. And then he saw the face of the leader, as on that day. Legend’s head snapped up, and he opened his eyes quickly, panting in fear. He slowly calmed down, and then he tried to go back to sleep. It was kind of odd that he finally defeated the one who killed his twin. He had gotten revenge. He sighed. Revenge he really didn’t want. Revenge that only was an accident. Sour revenge, not sweet revenge, horrible, sour, evil, cruel revenge. It made his stomach hurt just thinking of it. He sat up, and went over to the waterfall again; slipped into it, let the water wash him. He knew he was the protector, the fiercely loyal pack member. The one who would lay his life down for the pack. The wolf that had a hard outside appearance, but was the nicest wolf you could meet. If you were his friend. Enemies, however, would meet their worst nightmare, well, worst nightmare of a wolf that would never be your friend that was scarred and evil-looking.
He slipped out of the waterfall and let his fur dry as he slept, finally. A peaceful sleep for a Guard.

The true Seff

Part two of the story

Seff was angry; he wanted to hurt someone, anyone he could. So he stormed into the nearest pack camp he could find, the pack of Barwolf. He smiled evilly and entered the pack. A female, around nine months, attacked him. He threw her off of him, and snarled. He jumped over to where she was and started biting her, repeatedly for around five minutes. Then, another wolf about nine months, a male, came out of the shadows and jumped at him. The young male bit him on his back, and Seff threw him off with a simple shake. The male hit the ground, and fell on his face. He whimpered. Seff started to attack the female again. She yelped, and the male’s ears perked up. He struggled to get up; he slipped. She screamed; the male growled; Seff laughed. The male had a sudden burst of strength and sprang up at him, and scratched his muzzle, giving him a wide cut across it. This made Seff as mad as he could be, he sprang at the younger male; pinning him to the ground. The male gasped, and he choked a little under Seff’s paw. Seff grinned, and shoved his paw into the male’s neck more, making him pass out from lack of air. Then he turned around to the female. “Are you ready to die?” he said in a quiet and evil tone of voice. That was the last thing the female heard before she closed her eyes forever.

Today, Seff was sure he had fought the same wolf that had fought him three months back. The male who hadn’t saved his twin; and that weakling had defeated him! It angered Seff. It angered him greatly. He leapt out of the den in which he was laying, and jumped to the nearest tree. He clawed it with his huge paws, nearly knocking it over, and leaving giant scratches on its trunk. He stormed off to the hunting grounds of his pack. He would bring down an elk, by himself. To try and regain his strength, by doing an impossible task, even for an injured female elk, let along the fine healthy bull he had in his mind to kill. He ran along the way, and saw the bull. He leapt at it, scattering the herd, and the elk hit him with his antlers. Seff ignored them and bit into the elk’s leg, while the antlers scraped against his hide. He shook his head, tearing a wound into the elk. He bit it again in the neck, and tried to fell it.

After the long hunt, which took almost a week for Seff, Seff ate his fill of elk, which was quite a bit, over half of it. He had ripped into the flesh, violently. He brought back the remains of the elk, only a tiny piece of leg and side, and laid it down for the pack to eat.
“Alpha!” said a wolf, “Father! Where were you?!”
“Hunting, son.” Seff glared at the young wolf, as if that was an easy answer. He had a great longing for a smart son, who didn’t ask any questions, yet he had a son that was dull, and talked too much. He almost hated the young one, almost. The son, called Ulf, flattened his ears and ran away from his father’s glare, tail tucked in. Seff almost smiled as he saw that his son did have some smarts, just not that many. He knew how to hunt, fight, and stay away from his father when he was upset. Three strong points, and they all were good. He thought about destroying the pack of Barwolf, and decided he would, one day. One day soon, he would. As soon as he had enough wolves to fight for him, and enough to win, he would.

The legend of Legend
Part three

Legend glared at his reflection in the water. It’s all YOUR FAULT! He thought, Your sister Tala defended the pack, while you were SLEEPING! You should be ASHAMED of yourself, you COWARD! Yes, that’s a good nickname. Coward, it suits you, coward, coward, coward! He thought, angrily as he remembered the past. Well, at least you tried… he thought again, sadly this time. He had tried, only to end up failing. Failure wasn’t an option was what most say. For him, it was one of the only choices.

I’ve never been so cold.
It’s True, I haven’t. I’ve been I this god forsaken Place for 8 months And I’ve never felt so darn cold. Or painful. Snow Isn’t Normally Crimson is it? What am I talking about? Of course it isn’t. This is Ironic. I died because I’ve always believed in an eye for an eye. I suppose this is Fair, Poetic justice in a way. I showed Dragon his death, and I earned mine. Stupid karma. I wonder how long it’ll Take Me to go cold after I die. No one likes to think of dying but when I’m so Close to it I can’t help myself. I suppose you should know Something Since you’ve put up with My Moaning for so long...Well, Here goes nothing.

First paragraph of a short story im writing =3
