Nick couldn't help it, he slipped the clip to his harness and went forward, barking a command to the team to spread out more now that he wasn't there. He looked into Micheal's eyes and then Dewey's "Lead um home." He smiled as he turned and started testing the ice. He nearly broke through a time or two but he avoided falling in. "STOP!" He yelled again as he found a gainst whole when the ice broke infront of him again. He yelled to Dewey "Left! Go left! Far!" He said as he skirted the edge of the trench. He finally heard the lack of craking and new that they were on safe ground, he pawed through the snow to check, yup they were good. He made sure the whole team was on land before he went to stand by his clip, Micheal would have to put them back into formation anyway. He hung his head waiting for the scolding that would come from his owner for slipping his clip.

He pulled his head back up to look at Micheal and to Dewey the whine escaped his throat and his tail wagged telling both of them that he was sorry. "Im sorry, but what's one life if all of you had gone." He whined. He gently closed his teeth around's Micheal's wrist, the way he showed Micheal how much he loved him. He stayed were he was as he looked up at him and wagged his tail wagged slightly again.

Nick barked back to both of his friends. "Got it."

Micheal put the team back into formation and head around the ice. "It'll take longer, but at least you guys won't drown!" he shouted to the team.

Dewey barked and pushed against the harness.

Nick pressed against his own harness, vowing to himself that he would make up for his mistake and make Dewey and Micheal proud.

Oh, I see.

Dewey could hear the paws beat like drums again. 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2....he chanted to himself.

Nick saw Dewy counting the beat like he always did and Nick's state of mind changed into the wild, him being wild running after prey, running for fun, running to live. His eye's glazed over and he let out a wolf/dog grin and imagined himself the master of the wild, his whole pack counting on him for survival. The great red wolf. He ran faster, pressing himself against the harness again.

Nick saw the end of this leg of the race, and checkpoint just a bit ahead, his mind set knowing it as a cave were he could rest his pack. He let out all of his energey bursting into a full out sprint, making a couple of the dogs behind him stumble, gasping for air to try to keep up.

NIck didn't slow down until after they had passed underneath the banner. He panted, the thrill of running as a 'wolf' pounded through his ears. He smiled and barked.

"You got that right my friend!" He let out a loud howl, it might not have been a wolf howl, but if you hadn't seen Nick do it you would have belived that it was a wolf howl.
