I (like many other people) believe that Steele retired, and went on to live as a house-pet in his musher's home. I like to think he actually redeemed himself and got a mate, had pups, blah blah blah... But his popularity went straight out the window; so... I don't really know if that'd actually happen.

Well, in the storyline I stuck that ending on, Steele had eventually found a mate. It was hardly a match made in Heaven, though; he left her to die giving birth to their only litter. Which, as sick as it is, is just like him.

Agreed, it would a be very humorous moment. I really like that idea!

It is a question i've been thinking about and i think that steele must've been really unpopular after Balto 1 since last time we saw him he was being left by other dogs and since Balto was suddenly popular i guess he decided to stay out of balto's way.

Or maybe he left Nome.

I, personally think that either he died, was outcasted, or retired and lived with his musher. However, in a deleted scene Steele was originally intended to die. I'm all for he died, but that's just my personal opinion.

Even though there is a storyboard that suggests Steele may have died a gruesome death, I doubt that he died in the final version of the film. We already know that when Balto and the team returned with the serum, the dogs that were hanging out with Steele in the boiler room lost their respect for him and closed the door (which can be opened from the inside, as you hear it slamming open when Doc announces Balto's arrival) on him on their way out. As for his musher and other humans, I doubt if they lost any respect for him. Seeing as they have no way of knowing that Steele is a self-centered liar at heart, they probably figured that Steele had broken free from the sled and found his way back to Nome. As to whether or not Steele and his musher continued to race, I would like to imagine that his musher retired Steele from sledding due to his possibly older age. As noted earlier in the film when Balto beat him in the race to select the fastest dogs, his musher said that just about any dog can outrun him.

For me, he turned into the new outcast of the town, considering that some villains' final destination is to suffer by themselves all the damage that they caused to others, probably in the same way.
