I have some proof of inadequate moderator coverage to present to this discussion.

Two or three advertisement posts in the introduction section, all reported. They are still there and have been all day.

To the 'it's just an advertisement' argument:

Yes indeed, but it also means one of two things. Either no moderator has been on all day, or those that have been on have not checked the reports. The latter would be a whole different issue in itself.

Community did its 50%....but another 50% is also needed. Enter the "We can't be on 24/7!!" argument and let us come full circle AGAIN in this topic.

Well, we could always turn on the option that will force messages sent on the forums to be checked before they are allowed...of course, that will more than likely just prove to anger everyone. But, it would be a way to prevent any and all spam adds or nasty posts.

Would be completely wasteful given the current situation. If no mods responded to the reports than its logical to assume that they wouldn't review posts for inappropriate comments. And the lack of activity would, indeed, anger a lot of people, because discussions would be slowed down considerably and needlessly.

The solution remains simple and within reach - new moderators need to be appointed.

Which was exactly my point, though I really didn't state it. I was being a bit sarcastic (and I do apologize for that). I was upset, especially when I saw all of the reports piled up in the Moderator panel. I just cleared them and deleted/locked all the topics which needed it. No, it would be unethical to force that on everyone, especially because it would impose more problems for the members and delay replies.

However, more mods may/may not solve the problem. As other people have stated, there is a pretty even divide on the site between those who want more mods and those who want fewer.

I think recent events, specifically the ones I posted about today, is evidence enough (not to mention what others have talked about) that something needs to be done. There is evidence that the mod coverage is inadequate. So the group that demands more moderators has compelling evidence to support their claims. I have not seen anything remotely convincing that we need fewer. I hope that what's been going on recently will sway the undecided party in favor of more moderators. I think if sexual-themed pictures and subjects from advertisements are up all day, then we have ourselves a little problem. I would be interested to see what the 'less mods' party has to say to that.

Additional moderators will solve the problem if they are chosen properly for their jobs.

It's not over yet. Ever since this overhaul of the site, there's been compounding problems. And this is just one ugly example. This overhaul has done FAR more harm than good, obviously (just one look at the "Bug Report" topic in the Suggestions board can prove that conclusively). And the latest spambot/troll attacks.

Like one from someone (or someTHING) named "Soinynitmip". It's disgusting and absolutely beneath contempt. And who knows how long it will stay up? As of the writing of this post, twelve people (including myself) have had the mispleasure of seeing it - and at least one person in that twelve reported it (before I got to). And I flagged down one forum moderator TWICE on MSN Live. No response.

t's been up there since 12:45 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time. That's nearly two hours so far. How long? How long before SOMEONE will come in and see the report and deal with this? And how long before whatever failsafe was IN place before is reactivated??

Here is the link...for as long as it is up there: http://www.animationsource.org/board/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=28527. Warning - it's vile.

It's a spam bot. Another one like it posted something similar (I can only guess at the content, since it has been deleted and the bot has been banned by now) yesterday, and I managed to get to it within a few minutes of the report and post. I don't know why there's been such an increase in these spam bots lately, it's crazy! It's like we're under attack or something. They just keep joining, and without a captcha or some other system, they'll just keep joining because they can fake the e-mail field.

We never had one before, but yeah it has been suggested on the mod forums and a few other places I think, several times. All a captcha is is the image that provides the code you need to put in to prove you're a human, and it usually comprises of uppercase and lowercase letters and some numbers or symbols. I'll be suggesting it again to Steet soon. Over 10 different robots (both suspected and proven by their posts) have joined in the past couple of days. It's clear something needs to be done.
