It's a little ironic (to me, at least) that you did mention how some people have to load up their posts with smilies in order to express their intent, even if they may not like to do this. I have fallen prey to this, simply for the sake of being understood, when in reality, there shouldn't be a problem with comprehension when a smiley is not provided. Good grammar does this job, and as long as you're used to being able to set the tone of your message using it you shouldn't need to bog down a reply with little winky faces, or barfing faces. They're just unnecessary.

Although I generally agree with this, I don't think it's genuinely bad to insert one or two smilies into a message to convey humor or sarcasm. If I'm not mistaken, sarcasm is left out of professional writing because it can be interpreted as serious or sarcastic. Except in the form of a rhetorical question, which can be simple to identify. That said, smilies can be used to gauge the level of humor in a statement or to denote sarcasm. In that sense I find them to be useful, as long as they are used sparingly. Words should be used to make a point, and correctly chosen smilies can augment that point with emotion. Of course, other methods of expression can be used through bolding or italicizing words...but the smilies are an internet phenomenon that, if used sparingly, can add life to text.

Yep, that was what I was trying to say. Sorry if I made that unclear at all.

What I did get was that, with the proper and correct use of grammar (a rare thing on a site such as this, even among native English speakers), the use of smilies is unnecessary. I mean, how often do you see smileys in hand-written letters (granted, that's becoming an increasing rarity in this day and age)? Or in published books or magazines? Or in scrolling text documents on television or in the movies?

It looks like I misread her post. I fully agree that emotion can be conveyed by use of words alone. And that most people are probably fully capable of conveying emotions or meaning through text. Which does render smilies unnecessary as you said.

Quote:
I prefer to post most of my stuff without smileys, and shouldn't have to worry about going out of my own way to make certain that people understand my context BY inserting smileys. That is, in some ways, an admission by me that I am incapable of getting my point across without them. And frankly, it's not my problem. In my particular case, I studied English, grammar, expression, writing, and communication extensively in college (and in high school). I see no problems in how I express myself. Rather, I see lots of younger people jump to conclusions about what I am saying, or overreacting to the "big words" (or even just their use)...as if effective, intelligent and sophisticated language use were something to be ridiculed -- as a relic of an older time and of older generations. What does that say about today's youth?

I hope my post didn't make it seem as if I believed smileys are the only (or best) way to express emotion and/or meaning. Because I certainly don't think that. There are of course many better and more concrete ways of doing that.

In response to the rest of your paragraph, I believe it says a number of things. Interestingly enough, I don't even think a lot of these people are aware of the grammatical fallacies that they are committing. As an example, during one of my school periods, I am a teacher's assistant. A couple days ago she asked me to sift through her school emails. She asked me to print out several student emails that they sent her. Upon reading them, I noticed there was a lack of capitalization and punctuation. Now, I've always believed that utilizing decent grammar is a respectful gesture. And for students (seniors, I will add) to overlook that when emailing their ENGLISH teacher...I don't know, in my opinion, you either have to have a lot of nerve or be quite unobservant to do something like that.

I'm not picking on you or trying to invalidate what you said, Ghost-Unit, I hope you realize that.

I know. I am now questioning if I should have responded to that post at all. Generally, I feel that smileys are an available resource that's potentially useful, so long as they don't fall into the domain of irritant/spam/annoyance.

It looks like, to some extent, I misunderstood what you said. So that's my bad.

Yeah even places i have been on a long time i do respect newbies. and some people dont. its just like the new kid in school. lots of older kids don't like the new kids. i don't know why.

I totaly agree. i have been on the balto source site for over a year now and i decided to give the forum a goo because i love forums and i am a Chicken smoothie fan (My posts is currently 3673 posts on there) so im not new to Forums. but when you compare the friendlness(sp?) between the two forums Animation source forums falls way behind. When i first joined Chicken smoothie i was new to forums but i learn't fast because of the helpfulness of the users. i was exspecting Animation source forums to be the same but boy was i shoked because i looked like a newbie to animation source which im not i just normaly spend my time on the normal site.

I'll just post this here, "Respect has to be earned"
This goes for many people, newer members who break rules don't earn respect easily.

There are a lot of rules, (I'm not moaning about them because they are for our own protection.) and it can be a lot to take in all at once. Especaily if this is the first forum you join because I started this forum before any others.

While that may be, it doesn't change the fact.
This is how people work, how I work. You have to earn respepect to many people who belive this way.
Some people give you respect instantly, others you have to earn.

Forgive me bolt the superwolf, but your comment was a bit confusing, but I shall reply at the best of my understanding:
If you have any questions feel free to ask them here, this topic is made to help the new members, and I still intend to do so.
I am glad to hear however that you've had it good here so far ;)

Don't feel left out, Bolt the superwolf.

When I first joined, I have made tons of mistakes. I got so many topics locked in the past. So you aren't alone.

Now 7 months here and I have adapted well.

You know who has adapted very well in less than 2 months?

AJ AKA Charlie B. Barkin, He had made friends, and also has lots of posts. I started an RP with him already. He is a cool guy. Just because you are a newbie doesn't mean you are different, they are just like everyone else. But they are still learning and such.

They adapt over time. Like me. Even Roi up there has had that time here as AS like 2-3 years ago. Everyone has had to adapt and be a newbie.
