This is just my suggestion, feel free to disagree. Maybe traced, or copied balto things like that should be classified under fan images instead of fan art?

If find it a bit annoying as well, I just avoid galleries like that.

Everyone has a different way of learning how to draw and no one can control the amount of people who favourite their gallery. Complaining about the "millions" of faves (A bit of an exaggeration much? The highest we have on here is Pample with no more than 740 I believe) they receive is unfair as they can't help it.

Members are allowed to copy from screenshots to learn. They don't really know any better. And to be honest, it's normally very obvious when they copy so giving credit, whilst preferred, isn't entirely necessary. Only is they take credit for it which, though you say otehrwise, I've very rarely seen happen here and of course when you accuse them of "stealing" they are going to deny it because they didn't steal. They referenced. They copied. They learned.

It does annoy me when people try to learn by copying the Balto movies. But not because of your reasons where they get lots of feedback and such. (Which actually sounds like jealousy to me? Why else would you have a problem with it?) Simply because they are falling into one of the things we are mostly tired of seeing - Artists who have a Balto style.

The best thing I can recommend to those starting out is to reference from photographs from real wolves and cite appropriately.

Quote:
A Person: Ummm those look ALOT like the screenshots from balto, same poses and everything

B person: WELL I DIDDN'T STEAL THEM! HOW COULD YOU ACCUSE ME OF STEALING

Like I said. Members are allowed to copy from them to learn. And they aren't doing anything wrong by doing so. Also, they AREN'T stealing art. Poses can not be copyrighted, so they're not stealing them.

To be honest. If you think someone is stealing don't argue with them or rant. Report them. But really I rarely see people stealing anymore and I'm very active in the fan art section.

The best post that sums this topic up! Nice one Keilidh!
I stayed off of the "Poses" subject because I tend to get harsh, but I fully agree with Keilidh.
Poses can't be Copyrighted. If they were, a billiongalzillion movies, would be "Stealing" from another.

I admit I've not read everything... frankly staring at the walls of text are killing my already sore head but:

To clarify; pictures which are copied/heavily reffed from Balto/TLK/whatever screenshots are fine.
Like Keilidh said, it's a learning process. That's how I started drawing too.

Tracing however is frowned upon and not allowed. You don't learn hardly anything from tracing, just how to see lines under a piece of paper.

Reffing & copying = ok.
Tracing = Not ok.

Reffing & copying = Learning process.
Tracing = Lazy, quick way to say "look what I drew!!1!".

Maybe I should change the term in the rules then : because I clearly mentionned that tracing was allowed, while I meant "taking a reference pic".
I agree with what has been said : everyone starts by taking a screenshot for reference. Even true animators do.
As for bad drawings getting many favorites - what can we do about that? Can I just make a filter "Do not show bad drawings"?
