Would you listen to American rap or British rap?

I respect a lot of what has been said. It seems there are many opinions about this genre and it is interesting how differing they are. Personally I like rap because I don't mind finding one or two really good artists that I can listen too instead of hearing all of the crap-(yes some of it is just stupid to me). If the rapper has a good flow that can carry on through different styles and beats and his or her voice isn't grating then I can appreciate the skill. But as with all genres of music some of it just sucks, some artists or groups are really amazing while others make you wonder why in the crap they ever got signed to a record label or where allowed to record music. The greatest comparison for me would be like Twista and Eminem to rappers like Lil Wanye and Bubba Ray. While Twista and Shady are fast quick and witty with their lyrics, Wanye and Bubba have slow drawls that sometimes bare well thought out delivery but really don't bare the same depth. (Again this is just my opinion.)
Also with rap sucking nowadays....ever kind of music suffers sometimes.
Back in the 70's in the very dawning of rap it sucked!!! Songs had artists talk and sometimes it's way annoying.
True classic rock has also gone down hill from what it used to be. Mostly it's gothic metal or thrash which I'm fine with. However it doesn't have the same timeless feel to me like greats such as Boston, Journey, Billy Joel, Kenny Loggins, Heart, Bon Jovy, Pat Benetar, Phil Collins, Michael Jackson, Elton John and many others like them that I haven't mentioned.
Music is like people. It sees it's ups and its' downs, it's miserable days and it's glory days.
Also some rap is sexiest but again that can be said with a lot of things. Rap like metal is usually a genre based on anger and expressing that anger. Some of the best songs that I've heard stem from this. Above all it is a feeling, an emotion so it can't be said that it isn't music. Music is feeling and expression of thought.

The bad thing about rap is that they always rap about the something over and over... How bout changing and talk about their good life instead of partying, riding super cars, doing drugs, ect.
Soulja Boy in some songs kinda heads the right way then messes it up.

Honestly, I agree with the topic creator. I actually like some rap.. but it has definitely gone downhill. Now, most of it is about disgusting things that I can't listen to for five seconds without smashing the radio. I like maybe two songs by Eminem, but I LOVE TobyMac and KJ-52. It's the rappers with meaning in their songs that you have to look for, not just look around the surface at all the popular (c)rap like Soulja Boy or Lil Wayne.

Nowi think rap is kinda annoying because when I listen to them carefully then all they talk about blowing money on useless things, doing things that are unnessesary, secks , alochol, drugs, partying, and b( )( )ty. These things are getting old but I will still listen.

For anyone who likes good clean rap/rapcore, I advise looking into Manafest, Lecrae, KJ-52, and some older Thousand Foot Krutch.

I don't listin to rap really, I agree that what's been produced today is absolute garbage and the lyrics are meaningless and offensive ... but then again anything in the top 40 these days belongs in a bin ... but the genre as a whole isnt the worst and I can see the appeal (with the old stuff) I respect you for sticking with your guns and putting yourself out there and voicing the positive things about your favourite music. Theres nothing better than defying a sterotype.
I mean I listin to metal and some older rock/pop ... but when you think of metal you think of screaming and swearing... at least my mum does. But if you take the time to listin to it then you'll find out how wrong you are, yeah sure some of it is swearing and screaming... but they're getting their message across right?
If you want to burn a hole in your ears go and listin to modern dance music and dubstep, thats the real nightmare!!!

By the way if your music taste has been subjected to my critisism here then no hard feelings ... its nothing personal, im just someone who doesnt understand your tastes, not everyones going to agree!! :) On the whole I respect everyones tastes, as I would expect someone to respect mine.
But seriosuly if your obssesed with some 1 dimensional boy band like One Direction or JLS ... just give your life a rethink. Olly Murs and Rihanna are included XD
No offense ...

Ah rap, <3. Let me first state this. Most of your opinions have merit behind them. Today's rap music is filled with the things you've stated. Although, let me talk about rock for a second. Rock is sex filled also, that's what rock n roll is slang for, AND yes that includes some of the classic 80’s rock also. Heavy Metal Deathcore and stuff like that, what do you think/know it's filled with? There's songs like this in almost every genre. I could rail on country for paragraphs with this one.

If you're going to dislike rap because of that, you may as well stop listening to most music and put on Beethoven. I'm not saying you need to, but I do wonder whether or not it's because people dislike the rap artists themselves. I've seen people say "Oh I can't stand rap, it's crap that only talks about getting some and shooting some black guy" then they go on to talk about how rock is 100% better then rap (which if that's their opinion then fine let them have it), but when they list bands like "the Sex Pistols" or "KISS" I sense a huge double standard there. Sorry, but I don't buy it.

Now, I dislike 99% of rock music, I dislike a lot of rap music. Why? For exactly the same reasons mentioned above, lyrics that are driven by an almost animal instinct rather than heart, or a noise that makes my ear drums bleed.

I'm not against the light romance based songs either, if I said I was then I'd be lying. But there are some artists that produce good songs. A lot of you mentioned TuPac, he was great yes. But I'd like to talk about DMX also, look up some of his songs (I recommend Right/Wrong because it's swear free) and you'll find a similar style. No I don't like Eminem, his songs are too vulgar for me. And I don’t really like a lot of the other artists either. Sometimes I hear a good song from them, and if I do, I’ll add it to a playlist or something.

That’s just my two cents on the issue, if you still extremely dislike rap for those specific reasons, compare the lyrics of what you’re listening to and the lyrics of other rap songs, both good and bad; see if you can’t find something different, interesting or even relatable or profound.
