I'm sorry to say this...but really, that's a load of bull ((no pun intended)). From looking at your posts from this thread...I've seen nothing but denials. You either give the imply of 'well, this isn't sourced / credited so it's not true' or just skip over the true and credited positive facts of the breed of all. Exactly what you accused me, and others, of doing.

You have not replied at all to my last post...and yet you have to my others. Why?

Also, please tell me, do you have any personal experience with this breed? Have you checked out a few breeders, talked with them? What about owners and people who have fostered a few of these dogs?

Yeah, we're passionate about "our" breed. Because a lot of people, like you, are against the breed and see NOTHING but the negative past of the APBT. People can't get past the fact that, like every other breed, these dogs should not be discriminated because of their owners.

We have a darned right to be defensive of this breed.

Because, the sad truth is, if we didn't stand up for this breed and prove people wrong by having people-loving and CGC tests done on these dogs, the breed would be destroyed at the end of the day because of nothing more than people who can't face up to the truth.

I honestly cannot beleive that one would be as stupid to think that banning one breed wouldn't cause the gangsta-wannabe's to move onto a different breed.

They're banned in my country. The dog of choice is the Staffie or Irish Staff, and many have moved onto breeds like the Presa Canario instead. Supprisingly, despite the fact that there are more pitbulls in the country than before they were banned, the breed most likely to attack you is a Jack Russel.

Regardless of whether they are more likely to bite than any other breed {and a well-bred bull-and-terrier is as safe with a child as a labrador}, banning them does nothing- as usual, the responsible owners who have the good knowlage to train their pets will suffer, and as usual, the people who shouldn't own any dogs at all will just get them anyway. By banning 'pit bull type' as is banned in my country, you open the floodgates for all manner of dogs to be destroyed- many not containing any bull blood whatsoever. I /love/ how bans focus on making responsible owners lives a misery- keeping their dogs in kennels with no walkies, no mental stimulation, and in some cases no vet care or even a blanket to sleep on, for years, untill finally deciding "Ah, it would apear it was a Shar-pei Staffie cross after all. Here- take your mentally abused dog back. No hard feelings, eh?", instead of hunting down the real menaces- those who encourage agression, or keep their 'gaurd dog' on a chain in the garden with no social interaction, then expect it to be amazing with kids when their neice comes to visit.

Whoa...hang on a second, I don't see any reason to debate (near argue) about the "correct" term for the breed, most members here are not "dog experts", we're regular people hence we're going to use regular terms, not only that but I've heard breeders and dog trainers use "pitbull" an awful lot as a short for the full name which is rather long.

Now can we return to the friendly debate this was before people got unneccessarily(sp?) defensive, it's a fact everyone has to face, this breed of dog has attacked people the same as probably every other breed of dog.

Return to friendly debate, I don't want to have to end up locking this topic.

Personally, I don't see the problem of saying Pit Bull, even though I tend to use APBT more. (Just so people will know clearly on what I'm talking about.)

Firstly, I'll say thanks for this topic! It's much needed! :)
And I agree with you, aswell as many others on this board.

However, not trying to go off topic, but to all those that said they don't like APBTS-

I really don't see why people want to ban this breed.
Why? What good is it to ban this breed? (Maybe the answer is in this post.. But I'm still going to ask it.)
I just want an answer. A GOOD answer. Not a: "They killed children."
"They attacked people." "They are dangerous." "So no gangster will own them" or whatever. [Not saying anybody said that here, but I heard it before from other places.]

People that own dogs to look cool, to fight them, ect will move onto the next breed. And, then, guess what? We will have another "bad" breed banned. Once APBTs are gone, then we all move onto the next breed. People are already doing that now. And, APBTs are clearly not the only breed that is banned right now, but other breeds aswell. As they say--"Your dog could be next."

I'm not going to say "Oh, APBTs are angels, they don't do anything wrong." No. I'm not going to say that. They need strong owners, they are tough dogs, and many are generally dog-aggressive(not human-aggressive). BUT I see no reason to ban them. There is breeds that attacked, KILLED, and did much harm. They are clearly not the only breed.

While they are not always angels, they are not always the beast or demon that many view them to be, neither.

My point? I have no idea. It's just how I view the whole dog banning piece of poo.
How I view the breed itself? I personally love the breed. I have met my share of bad ones, and good ones, just like any other dog I met. I believe I met more good APBTs than any other breed of dog. I guess after getting attacked by a GSD, Chow Chow, and getting bitten by Labradors, Goldens, and smaller dogs, aswell as many other dogs.

Once again, it's how I view it. I have no problem with people who fear the breed, or simply dislike the breed. It's just the people that go up to you- and give you this snobby look. And question you;; asking why do you like "monster" dogs, then insult you for being a fan, and go around saying every dog of that breed deserves to die. I met my share of those people. And they are the ones I have a problem with. =/

[This post is not directed at anybody, btw.]
sorry if I went a bit.. off topic? =P

Actually, JC, if you'd care to look into it as I'm feeling a tad lazy, there have been SEVERAL breeds who have recieved the same, if not MORE, "hype" about aggression and untrustworthiness, including the Shar Pei, the Chow Chow, the German Shepherd Dog, Dobermans, and Rottweilers.

And yes, they were the "big, bad dog to own" in their own eras - the ones that people feared, steered their children away from, and battled to regulate the ownership of these dogs. APBTs are in the spotlight now as the "vicious dog". It comes in cycles. Each of the above listed breeds had around a 10-year spotlight on them as the target of loathing and fear.

So, yeah, guess what I'm trying to say is that while the APBT may be a controversial breed today, we will move on to another.

And the reason there are so many media reports on "Pit Bull Mauling!!!11!85384nfkalk" is because they ARE the targeted breed. There's no press better than bad press, and when each breed had their "bad dog" turnabout, they were the breeds most showcased in attack scenarios. And, in a lot of cases, people cannot correctly identify a real APBT out of all of the bully breeds, and even mistake mutts for APBTs. I've seen it myself on TV - we had a local listing of a "Pit Bull Attack", and the featured dog, shown during the attack as it was caught on camera, was a Lab x Shar Pei mix. x_x

So, don't believe every APBT mauling story on the news unless they show you the dog and you KNOW what you're looking for.

It's time to stop talking to you legend. You are not treating this subject seriously. You are, in fact, treating it like an extremist. That is unfortunate. But the facts do not bear it out.

You may say about me what you will. But it will not succeed in baiting me into further oneupmanship with you. That is neither a submission, nor a validation of anything you've said. It is doing what is best for this forum, and saving it the further wasting of bandwidth in regurgitating what has already been said ad nauseum.

I suggest, for everyone's sanity, that you do the same, and stop the hardcore slamming of anyone who doesn't happen to like pit bulls. Learn to deal with the fact that not everyone is going to think warm & fuzzies about your favorite breed, and move on.

Actually, I think you're the only one going on about it when you don't have your facts straight. All you do is suggest time and again that APBTs should be wiped out because there's just "too much hype". You are what we call a troll - while not necessarily posting to seek attention, you came on a post about supporting the APBT as a breed and ranted and raved even though no one shared your views, knowing full well well you'd get an emotional response from others.

Oh, and for the record, APBTs are FAR from my favourite breed. If you must know, my favourite breeds are the American Indian Dog and Karelian Bear Dog. I just happen to be a dog nut who has their facts straight, and you happen to be the person to sit and argue on a forum full of dog lovers.

So, before you accuse me of the "warm & fuzzies", get your facts straight.

I would stick up for ANY dog breed that came under a jurisdicting eye such as yours, not just the APBT. If you honestly believe that no one can truly control a dog, especially a bully breed, then you are sadly mistaken. It isn't that hard to take control of a dog, it's just morons who see a dogs malfunctions as cute that ruin things.

And you can't expect anyone, especially on a topic like this, not to feel provoked and angered that you'd come and spit your all-knowing "doggy gospel" to us when we know what we're talking about. We aren't just APBT lovers, we're dog lovers, and we don't appreciate the scrutiny that the media and BSL pushers put on these dogs, as well as any other breed.

Have a nice day. :)

I agree HIGHLY with erminex. 'Kay, destroy all breeds that can be classified as pits. Then what? They'll move on to the next breed of large dog, say a German Shepherd ((and this is my one true breed that I'm in love with, and even I have to admit they need a strong, positive leader otherwise they can go bad easily)), or a Doberman, or a Golden Retriever. It takes a lot to stop dog fighting.

You, on the other hand, like each over-defensive, overly-melodramatic pit bull (ER...APBT) afficinado or fan, have refused to recognize and acknowledge the negatives. You only see it has narrow-minded hate and baseless prejudice...which is, in fact, "a load of bull". (No pun DEFINITELY intended.)

xP

I'm not the one who's getting all defensive, am I? :/ I think that JerseyCaptain, if you cannot keep your cool during a debate, then you should leave and come back and reply when you're cooled off.

Now....really, I think you're the one who's getting all overly-melodramatic. You come onto a board FULL of pit lovers....and you start saying that there is no reason to defend the breed against people who don't have their facts straight? Seriously?

Quote:
Ownership? No. Attacks? No. Interaction? Plenty. I've seen good AND I've seen bad. The difference is, I acknowledge both.

I'm sorry to tell you this. I really am. But you're going to see good and bad in every breed. Take Chihauhuas, for example. I've seen a lot more bad ones that I have good ones, but I know there are people out there who breed and own this breed responsibly. I still am not in favor of chi's, but I don't go all "OMG LETS BAN THIS BREED!!!!111!!!". >_> ((Like Ohio is trying to do to the pits, right now. I doubt they're going to pass that bill if the Ohions have anything to say about it xD)).

Quote:
No. You don't. Certainly not if you use it to attack anyone who happens to disagree with you, and who presents alternative FACTUAL information and speaks to the legitimate feelings of those who DON'T like or fear this breed.

Yes. We do.

We're not attacking you by pointing out that the APBT is a DOG. A DOG. Canis-lupus, descended from the wolf. Dogs have instincts. They will live up to those instincts. Banning breeds are not going to help this fact.

Quote:
IN EVERY CASE. All on their ads in the dog magazines (which allow them) AND on their websites. I've only seen a few ads and websites (of those which are not broken or dead) which present the APBT without all that hype."

I'll show you a few, shall I?

http://www.familyreignkennels.com/index.html
http://laststandpits.homestead.com/
http://www.freewebs.com/pantheakennels/

Also, found more. But some links are not working. >_>

And...what? No breed attracts more bad breeders than the APBT? Heck, I can give you LOADS. Dobermans, Rotties ((I think this breed is even more known than the APBT, since they're bigger))...I can give you more breeds if you'd like?

Quote:
"-the Chow Chow"

Groomer Has It, the show on Animal Planet, was all "OMGlook!! A ticking time bomb!" on them. -Rolls eyes-

I don't see the point of your posts. I don't. We can say it a million times that this breed is like every other, but people won't get it through their heads.

I've PROVED that other breeds have went through this. They still are. I've seen loads of GSD breeders trash their GSD lines for crappy-looking German Shepherds.

And then there are Rottie breeders. I've seen some pretty crappy kennels in that direction, too.

"We aren't just APBT lovers, we're dog lovers, and we don't appreciate the scrutiny that the media and BSL pushers put on these dogs, as well as any other breed."

THANK YOU! For saying what I've been trying to for ages in one paragraph. xD

Really, JerseyCaptain....you asked for facts. I gave you facts. You chose to ignore those facts. I'm not going to change your opinion and you're not going to change mine. But coming on here and provoking every one is not going to help, specially when this was NOT supposed to be a debate anyway.

May I ask your point, JerseyCaptain? Those links are fine and dandy, and I have never said that pits are less likely to bite than soandso other breed. And, like one of your sites have said, it's also chows, rotts, et cetera.

Dogs will be dogs. American Pits will be American Pits, Chow Chows will be Chow Chows, and it really doesn't matter.

You came on a American Pit loving thread. You present your view - which seemed to imply that you did not see any reason nor form to defend the Pit, nor did it seem like you even seen a reason to continue the owning of the breed - in a forum full of American Pit lovers. You knew you would get negative reviews.

I don't see any point of even responding to your posts any more, so back out if you will.

Anyway, I'm off. Just wanted to say that every one should keep defending the breed - whoever says otherwise isn't worth the time. :D

Oh dear. I'd requested for this topic to be ended. x-x
Anyways, please no replies to this post. x3 I don't plan on debating again, but only to state a few opinions.
Dogs will be dogs. They're not perfect. Some will be "bad", some will be "good". That's all a part of dog nature. Other breeds attack people too, not just pitbulls. I think pitbulls will always be the ones reported, and feared. We can't wipe out a breed though. Because there's always going to be pit-fighters who sneak pitbulls around the law. And if we do manage to wipe the breed out, what good would that be? They can always find a new breed. I say leave things as they are.
Let the pitbulls stay, and keep taking away the dog-fighters. For the 'Your Dog may be next' thing is true.
I own a Saluki and an Akita. They could be next. Golden Retrievers COULD be next. Any dog can be.
Remember, nothing is ever safe.
