Well, IMO, you can ONLY become a Moderator if you are one of the first ten-or-so people to join the site. Believe me, I know how it is, since I joined a virtually-unknown site awhile back, convinced its owner to create a forum, and became the first (and only one up to this point in time thus far...) Mod there. Oh, and BTW, I simply LOATHE the rule (DEFINITELY NOT the entire site as a whole) of certain websites with 20+ Mods (like this one and http://www.bungie.net) that allows them ALL with the dreaded BANNING power, as IMHO (once again), I think that forum moderation powers are ENOUGH, but BANNING powers= scenarios like this: Some random site member (in a PM to a site Moderator): "You suck, are a big meanie, and I hope you go crawl into a corner and die for all I care." Some random Moderator (in response to the message after receiving and reading it): "Oh, I've been immaturely insulted in a mild fashion as this guy's FIRST offense, so I'll just go ahead and perma-ban him instantaneously simply because he doesn't like me and called me a couple of names!!!!!! Besides, so-called 'second chances' are for prissy little babies!!!!!!" *Evil laughter ensues.* Simply put, people don't always get along and argue immaturely like that sometimes (Hey, that's life for ya'!!! ), and virtually ALL people absolutely HATE the very easily-understood yet EXTREMELY despised fact that someone(s) is/are OVER them in the so-called hierarchy that is "site authority", so sometimes, it's best to just ignore that person as best you can without losing your cool, ya' got me now, guys??? *Looks at Mods.* BTW, JSYK, the vast majority (if not all) of you guys are "good guys" in my eyes, so to speak- this message is just here to insure that none of you guys EVER become like the Mod in said example above, alright??? So now, be nice, be fair, be just, and (probably...) most important of all, please BE HAPPY!!!!!!! -Charlie.

They have to be breaking the rules, but not only once. They get three warnings and then they can be banned. Mods get little appreciation, they have alot of people that hate them because they either banned one of the persons friends or just because of the fact that they are mods, and that not many other people will get to have that job.
People think that it's soooo fun and easy, but really people, and this is coming from a person who's NOT a mod, it's not. Whether you want the "job" to be liked or simply to boss other people around, it's not like that, being a mod won't get you any more friends (except the n00bs that say stupid things like "OmiHGAWD! i wanta be ur friend cuz liek i hope to be a mod some da y i look up to u ur soo cool and nice i klove u i wish sateet would make me amod!!"), and you will probably be driven out of your mind.
There is constantly drama on the shout box, the forums and anywhere else where mods are required. Not only is it hard for the mod to decide whos side of the story is true, but then they have to listen to the members that have been banned complain and whine until their time is finally done.
Trust me, every one of you who wants to be a mod, it's not easy. Durn, you said everything I was about to say. Also; asking to become a mod shoots your chances, and you will NEVER become one! If you ask once, you'll never become.(If I've understood the system here correctly lol )

If your the 1st person to join but you break rules and spam, your not going to be a mod. Being a mod is about resopsibillity, not when you join a site.

100% Amen Correct! They need to read some of the rules. They should understand that they can't be a moderator on their first day. It takes time, and some people don't even get to be mods. Example! Player557: Hey, I want to be a mod,can I be one? Player111: Sorry, it takes a while, sorry!! Player557: Well, FINE! Mod: Sorry, you can't... Not yet, good luck though! *TOPIC LOCKED* 45 minutes later Player577: can i be a mod now? Mod: no...? Yeah, I agree alright!
