I'll give Aleu credit for being so determined to find out more about her true heritage, but that's basically the only good thing I can say about her.

When she finds out she's part wolf, she starts getting dramatic about it like she's some kind of freak and begins whining and acting like a spoiled brat because things aren't going the way she wants them to go! When you have that many annoying and immature traits in a character, it's obviously going to be a major turn off for many viewers. She might as well be in one of those stupid teenage drama shows because that's where characters like her deserve to be!

I believe that she was only expressing her dissatisfaction with the truth Balto gave her. And without her acting like a "spoiled brat," it wouldve created the runaway scene as well.

What I've gathered from the community here is that they hate her because of her high-pitched voice and basically the fact that she's a teenager.
Which is rather unfair.

No, it's her attitude, and people will like and dislike what they want. That IS fair.

Yeah, her attitude and personality are that of an adolescent: bratty and rebellious as well as indecisive and uncertain.

You as well as the rest of us could still be adolescents or at least you were one once, you should know this.
That's not restricted to her as a character, that's her age group and that's all that people really hate.

Also, I'd like to point out the correlation between your apparent surly attitude to everything about Balto, and your My Little Pony icon.
OBVIOUSLY you've moved on and found something "better" to obsess about.

So? Don't be stereo typical, not all teens are like that. Besides, dogs don't become teenagers, and Aleu is stated to be over, or at least a year old. A dog is an adult by then.

A year? In dog years that's only 7.
Therefore she's not an adult, and that also explains her high-pitched voice.

If I may point out, that I seriously doubt the makers of this movie took any kind of science into perspective, what with the wolves thinking their only diet is caribou and all.

Her high-pitched voice and her attitude are rather annoying and the main reason I dislike her, but not 100%. Dealing with those subjects, however, I can safely say that I know a fair amount of teenagers who act like teenagers and aren't whiny just the same. They're mostly just smart-mouths, which we only get a hint of that from Aleu when she's being a grammar-Nazi. And no one likes a grammar-Nazi. (Especially those who have a hard enough time learning two languages to know little details that normal folks don't even care about themselves.)

In all honesty, there's all kinds of reason to love a free-spirited character, so long as their own reasoning is relatable and not outright stupid or regrettable later. Kiara from Lion King 2, is in essence exactly like Aleu. Only every rebellious thing Kiara's ever done was against her father who was wrongfully controlling her. And even then she had consequences for disobeying him.

Oh, but how could I forget that every mistake Aleu makes ends up turning out okay? Her character, despite making countless AVOIDABLE mistakes, never has a single consequence from them. A few are her telling her dad he hates him (she never apologized for saying that), not giving her mother ANY kind of proper goodbye, being a horrible daughter all-around, and those are just a couple of the family issues xD And everything is just hunky dory anyway. No one likes a goody-two-shoes *coughkodicough*.

Excellent post by the ways, Cat. Especially the last bit. The fact she never had anything bite her in the butt for anything she did wrong still burns me.
Nor giving Jenna a proper farewell. I find it hard to believe that when Balto let her know Aleu wasn't coming home, she just let it fly like that.

Uhh...how about nothing happened because Balto was there to get her out of trouble the whole time?
All the problems were avoided because of Balto.

Sorry, going back on topic now.

I'm sure we're all well aware that there are some teenagers that aren't bratty and stubborn like Aleu is, but did you really think that the media wasn't going to adhere to stereotypes?
I mean come on, this same bratty defiant adolescent figure has been used in a lot of Disney sequels, such as Lady and the Tramp II and The Lion King 2 as someone mentioned.

And once again, Aleu never got in serious trouble or suffered any repercussions because Balto was there to bail her out.
She WOULD have been shot by that hunter if Balto didn't step in and attack him.
She WOULD have gotten pummeled by that bear if Balto didn't happen to find her in time and jump in.
She WOULD have gotten beaten up by Niju if Balto didn't swim over to fight him off for her.
So you're hating ALEU because she didn't suffer any consequences? That's a credible reason to hate Balto for not letting her be punished, or even to hate the film as a whole.
But that's not a reason for anyone to be hating Aleu specifically; that was beyond her own control.

I know right? You know how alot of movies roll the credits but still show extra footage of the movie? They could've done some stylized screenshots of him breaking the news to her and her being upset or something xD I mean, it's the LEAST they could've done. But what they should've done was have her discover that her place was back at Nome or have her say that she'll visit soon or something, you know.



Yeahhhhhh about those. They suffer the same problems, aside from Sequelitis. Movie-makers cared more about making a buck than making genuinely interesting, or more importantly, relatable characters. I mean, who is actually going to come out and say they share the same negative traits Aleu has?

As I said before, Kiara, tho has her own "eh" moments, had her consequences, and learned her lessons where they counted.

Scamp is hardly endearing, with his "That's laaame, watch me do better *fail fail fail fail*" attitude. But Angel at least got mad at him for blabbing her secret when she asked him not to. And also for disobeying his family, he was also rightfully punished. And for even agreeing to be a junkyard dog and be without his collar, he was taken to the pound. Consequences for being an idiot helped him evolve and mature.

Melodie from Little Mermaid 2, I'm not even gonna defend her. She has the same issues as Aleu, minus the annoying voice.



So in other words, without Balto, she would've died. THAT definitely defends her as a character That she's completely hopeless without daddy. I feel a tinge of pity for that wolf pack.

And just so you know, it's VERY. VERY difficult to like a movie and not like it's main characters at the same time. Aleu was getting her butt saved throughout the whole thing and not giving a single word of thanks for it. And the fact that her existence made Balto a terrible parent on top of being an uninteresting character. Not only can she not stand on her own as a character, she negatively effects the ones she interacts with. She's lame.
