Vetch snapped his gaze towards her. "So he doesn't have to run." he urged, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. He turned his head back to the path. "I don't mind if he rides on my back." he added.

Rue nodded. She would've offered a ride to Nook easily, but Vetch had already filled that position, and knowing him, he wouldn't allow for it to be changed without a heated arguement.
Excitement still shone in Takari's gaze as her black paws kneaded the ground, her bushy tail twitching in anticipation. "Are we going now?" she blurted out suddenly.

"Yep." said Vetch in annoyance before launching like a rocket, Nook hanging onto his back and Nudge latching onto Vetch's tail, enjoying the ride.
Nook leaned down towards Vetch's ear. "What's eatin' you, buddy?"
Vetch narrowed his eyes at the nothingness in front of him. "I'm fine." he snarled.

Rue was forced to break into the run, though the events of the past few days had left her paws aching. She would need at least a day of rest before she was willing to walk on them. Yet she ran anyways, hurrying to race beside Vetch. He was her friend, and lately, she seemed to want him to be more than that. And right now he was acting incredibly grouchy; it made her wonder what was wrong.
Takari didn't know Vetch well enough to pick up that something was wrong. All she knew was she was reunited with one of her old friends, whether it be in a strange world or not. And that made her happy, lending speed to her paws.

Nudge swung on Vetch's tail until he finally jumped off and landed on Takari's back, giggling hysterically.

Nudge rolled off Takari's back, laughing as he did so.
"Quiet!" shouted Vetch. "Will you stop all the laughing?!"
"Sheesh, Vetch." mumbled Nook. "What crawled up your butt and died, huh?"
Vetch scowled. "I'm just tired and grumpy is all." he grumbled. He sped up his pace. "We're almost halfway to the trees."

"Seriously, Vetch. What's wrong?" Rue stared at him with stern, violet eyes; she demanded an answer this time. Vetch had been tired and grumpy before, but something had to be gnawing at him to make him so touchy.
"Laughter is said to be the best cure for illness. That includes grumpiness," Takari stated.

"Thank you, walking fortune cookie." Vetch growled to Takari, not caring if he was rude or not. He slowed his pace a bit to stay near the group when he said quietly to Rue, "You know, we can't just keep running to the trees every time something happens to us. You know..." he said, his voice trailing off a bit before starting up again, "...It's always been my job to protect Nook, and now that we have the trees to protect us, it kind of feels like..." his gaze fell to his thudding paws, "...it feels like I'm not as needed as I used to be."

"Fortune cookie?" Takari muttered indignantly. "Fortune cookie?"
Rue decided to comfort her later, and kept her attention focused on Vetch. "Vetch, are you comepletely, totally insane?" she demanded softly. "You are needed...alot. I would've had a nervous breakdown long before now if I hadn't had you to lean on! Listen, Vetch! I need you, okay? Don't ever say you aren't needed again! You're the only thing holding me together right now," she concluded, her volume dropping further.
She gazed at him with expressive violet eyes, a glimmer of emotion deep within their depths.

Vetch barely flicked his maroon eyes towards Rue, but he could still catch the emotion and pleading in her voice, and the look in her violet eyes simply added to his guilt. He felt guilty that he'd dumped this all on her, especially during the worst time, when everyone's lives were in jeopardy. Nudge's especially, mostly because Vetch ached with desire to shut him up himself. Truthfully though, Rue and Nook were his closest family he had, and knowing that he was needed was like a message from the big man upstairs. However, Vetch being Vetch, he didn't want to suddenly spill his heart and soul out right there. He had to be strong. For his friends. For his family. "Yeah," he said abruptly, still looking a tad angry at himself, "I mean-"
"There they are!" cried Nook with joy when the glint of silver needled over the horizon, "Sorry to interrupt, buddy, but the trees are straight on ahead!"

Rue brushed her tail against Vetch's side, her viole gaze turning instead to the horizon. The glint of metal made her feel weary once again; the trees seemed to be the only place she could sleep.

We see you're back. said the trees when the group arrived.
Nudge jumped out of his fur when he heard the trees talk in that cloudy, monotonous tone. "What the-" he stuttered, "What are these things? They're made of metal! And they talk?!"
Yes, young Nudge, we talk.
"Did you guys hear that?!"
"Calm down, Nudge." reassured Nook. "They protect us." he added, smiling up at the gleaming leaves.
