Shane bit his lip hard and squeezed his eyes shut instantly, knowing he had probably just condemned them all.

The flashlight man glanced back at the car, moving towards it slowly. He reached for his pocket and pulled out a switchblade. "I know how to find out if they're really dead." he said, his face expressionless. He stepped over Dymitri to where Shane and Zacky sat, blade extended. He took Shane's chin in one hand and dragged a long line across the boy's cheek with the knife, looking hard for some sign of pain.

Shane refused to make a sound, though the steel of the knife dug deeper and deeper into his cheek, and the blood running down felt like a waterfall. He gripped his father's hand the slightest bit tighter, not enough to see though.

The man ended the cut with a twist of the knife, then withdrew it. "This one is most likely unconscious." he announced. "But the blood is fresh; he's not dead."

"I dunno yet. Let me check." the man replied, walking around the back of the car to the other side where Kyler and Damien were. He tilted Kyler's head away from him and sliced a line on the underside of her chin.

"This one's alive too." the man stated before moving on to Tara. He couldn't reach her very well so he just grabbed her arm and carved another line up and down her arm, wanting a reaction out of either her or the older boy holding her.

Tara bit down on the inside of her cheek, trying to hold back the screams she so desperately wanted to release.

The man stopped cutting Tara's arm, but right before he was going to announce that they were simply unconscious, he noticed that her eyelids twitched the slightest bit. He grinned toothily, knowing he had won. He snickered and took her arm back, slicing a line down each of her fingers as slowly and painfully as he could.

The man's eyes flew wide and he cursed loudly as Chase kicked him to the ground. He couldn't find his knife, so he shouted and growled, "He's awake! Capture him! Now!"

The man writhed and screamed under Chase, trying to push the knife away from his own face as he kicked and tried to get him off. Finally he found his way to his feet after Chase was dragged off, and he just glared hard at the younger.

Tara whimpered, having seen the entire thing; and had blown her cover. "Hey!" she shouted. "Let him go!" she jumped out of the car and stood in front of the men holding Chase, trying to look as menacing as a little girl could.
