German Shepards...where to start?

Awesomly funny, pretty, and dumb, but smart, yah know? xD

I own one myself, she's actually a mix between German Shepard and Rottweiler.

But yes, German Shepards are great dogs. Big though!

I have a Shepard named Mayer. He's my knight in shining armour. He was bred for showing but he broke his tail on a door so...now he can't show. But he's the most intellegent dog I know, because he can open doors with knobs. He just leans on the knob and bang. It's open.

I love German Shepards. My old dog Ginger, was half German Shepard. She was the sweetest dog we had.

My cats can do that. lol

I had a German Shepherd named King or Rex [both mean the same thing, I liked King better.]

Love these dogs. On a site, this RETARDED person made a guild (It was neopets.com) And, it said that German shepherds were ugly and bad - and everything. They had photos of German shepherds snarling, growling, attacking - But they were doing their police work. =P
They said in a book it said that shepherds were bad. Hah, I wanted to just smack that person across the face. If only the guild was still there. =P

Would you be scared of this dog?

He/She is only doing police work. No need to be scared. xD

Well, if you're the one being attacked, and it's not police dog training with all the padding and stuff, then you should be scared of a dog attacking you. They're meant to be intimidating that way, to get the bad guys to give up. But still, not all German Shepherds are bad like that. It would be bad to think that they are all like that picture.

I wouldn't be scared from the photo. The dog could be doing police work, as you said or could be playing with another dog. Play fighting..

There is every reason in the world to be frightened of that particular image. First of all, the dog's muzzle is wrinkled, and he is baring his teeth AND gums. And his ears are erect and forward, and eyes open wide. That is about as aggressive a "face" as a dog is capable of putting on! He's is definitely NOT playing. Nor is that the face of a dog that is "playing with another dog" or "play fighting". That is an angry, aggressive dog. PERIOD.

Nor is a dog capable of thinking "hey, I'm just doing police work". There HAVE been police dogs, in the past, which have seriously injured suspects (guilty or not).

But for the firm words and control of their handlers, those German Shepherds are not only dangerous, they are quite capable of being DEADLY. And I don't care HOW well-trained they may be, no amount of training ever fully guarantees that an animal will not, for some inexplicable reason, go haywire once or twice, or whatever.

Let's not lose sight of this, and get all cute about it. And before all of you overly-liberal, young "pitbulls aren't evil, they're just misunderstood...and very cuddly" types start bashing me for what you might call my "cold cruelty" and "lack of understanding", I'm neither condemning German Shepherds, nor all police dogs. But be freaking realistic, people! Even an amateur (such as a pet owner who's actually taken the time to read books on dog behavior and training, such as myself) can recognize the signals that dog is sending, in that image (if it even IS a real image, and not just some artwork...of which I'm not totally convinced). And it's definitely NOT "hey, amigo...don't worry about me! I won't hurt you at all! I'm just doing police work! Wanna play? Tee hee!"

I'd LOVE to know where Balto Wolfdog even GOT this image. I highly-doubt it was from the website of any police organization...

I was joking. o_o Yes, people WOULD be scared. And if a dog was snarling at me like that, then yeah, I would be pretty scared. =/

I got the photo at a K-9 "Police Dog" site.
Now, If it's a real photo - I don't know.
But, it looks pretty real to me.

Glad to hear it, BWD. But you know how people are here...they tend to take stuff at face value...

Well, no duh... I mean, police training is meant to bring out the agressive side of a dog, and in doing that, (I believe) it lets out the agressiveness when it's needed, and not when it's not needed... I think...(I don't want to be someone who thinks they know something when they really don't.) Either way, dogs of any breed might go ballistic at some point (notice the word MIGHT, in that sentence.) Besides, if it wouldn't be a problem to train a german shepherd to kill, then they might... but then again, that's what cops have guns for... Oh well. Besides, German shepherds are also intimidating to a lot of people anyway, even if just by their appearance.
