Lightning wrote: But what's so hard to believe is that nobody has ever died from a sting-ray injury. It was just a freak accident. Poor Steve. His kids are only 8 and 3. Just think how the kids and Terri must be feeling.
I know. The stingray supposedly was hidden under the sand, and then it came up and stabbed him with his stinger. The problem is that Steve didn't do anything to provoke it, and according to CNN, stingrays do not attack unless they are under severe stress, and unprovoked attacks are very rare...
I'm sad that this freak accident happened to Steve

May He Rest In Peace.
Here are some things he said:
"But I put my life on the line to save animals."
"I have no fear of losing my life - if I have to save a koala or a crocodile or a kangaroo or a snake, mate, I will save it."
"No, snakes are no problem. I'd go to any country, anywhere, any snakes, not a problem."
"Since I was a boy, from this house, I was out rescuing crocodiles and snakes. My mum and dad were very passionate about that and, I was lucky enough to go along."
"Snakes are just very instinctive to me. I've been playing with snakes since before I could walk. It doesn't matter where or what it is, from the biggest to the most venomous."
"The first crocodile I ever caught was at nine years of age, and it was a rescue."
"The only animals I'm not comfortable with are parrots, but I'm learning as I go. I'm getting better and better at 'em. I really am."
-sigh- He was a very good person. It's so hard to believe he's dead, gone .. Just think how his family must feel. How the kids will grow up, and how they only seen their father at age 8 and 2, I believe.

This is terribly depressing news. I didn't watch the television or anything today, so I only found out when I stopped by this thread. And, in all honesty, I thought it was just another internet rumor. But I have seen a few places mention it, including imdb.com. It's a terrible shame...for his family most of all, but also for his fans. He brought nature shows into the mainstream with his unique style...and I believe he was the first. A man who could address children and adults without demeaning them. God, I will miss him! I will always remember that hilarious commercial he did for Federal Express, where he pretended to die after being bitten by a snake, because the carrier his team used for the one "shoot" wasn't Fed Ex. Man, was that funny! And it showed that he could poke fun at himself too. The man was a genius.
I always wanted to meet him too. One of my dreams was to travel to Australia for a sightseeing visit, and spend some time even in the outback. And, of course, to stop by the Australia Zoo (which he and Terri ran). Somehow, now, it wouldn't be the same.
It's tragically ironic...in Australia (where this apparently occurred), there's SO MUCH on land AND in the water that can kill you fast, that the Australians have become experts at emergency life-saving techniques. And yet, the barb penetrating his heart like that, well, it certainly is freaky...but that would only have rushed the poison through his system that much faster.
My heartfelt condolences and prayers for his family and his fans (like me). Rest in peace, Steve. We'll miss you!

This is one of the most tragic and one of the wierdest freak accidents I've ever heard of. The probability is like one in a million to have a sting slip under your sternum and pierce your heart. Crikey I'll miss Steve Irwin.

Don't get mad at me or anything, I have sympathy for his death..it was tradgic and all but it was sort of obvious that it was coming.
I mean.. messing with crocodiles and deadly creatures isn't really the safest hobby in the world..

Once was, will never be again. His own self is gone, but never forgotten. He is our teacher, he taught us well. He may have left, but his lecacy lives on... R.I.P. Steve Irwin
