Wow, that's exactly what happened to the Declaration of Independence. There was this one time for about 25 years or more when it was displayed behind a glass case, but it was in direct sunlight. That's why if you saw it today, it is very difficult to read. Then it was put in a really good casing away fron any sunlight, until they found a beelte had eaten away at one of the corners. Then they put it in an airtight, Argon gas filled, bulletproof chanber in the National Archives building, where it is today.

It's a shame how we treat our national treasures, isn't it? No matter the country. People just don't really have a TRUE appreciation for the historical treasures of their own country!

Highland...and everyone! I FINALLY have the answer as to the exact whereabouts of Togo's mount!
There was that nagging little question as to which of the two museums (Iditarod Trail Headquarters Museum or the Dorothy Page Museum, both in Wasilla) the mount is displayed in, and whether or not they were even the same museum, or two different ones.
They are, in fact, two different museums, and the answer to the question of where Togo resides is here:

Togo is at the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race Headquarters Museum… come on up!

Chas, Stan and Diane,
I am curious about the exact location where Togo's mount is displayed. Your website USED to have a great page on it, but that has since disappeared. Now, the remaining information on the internet (which is sketchy at best) cannot seem to determine whether the mount is in the Trail Museum, or the Dorothy Page Museum. Some websites even say the two museums are one and the same!
I have a great interest in this information, as I do wish to visit up your way sometime in the coming year, and would like to know with certainty where the mount is displayed. Thank you very much for your prompt response!

I think its great how you just set your mind on it and do the thing! I can't really do that You emailed them, which was so good of you to do! I could never do that, i know it sounds silly, but i woould forget or something! *big pat on the back for Balto Seppala!*
Anyway, hearing you talk about Balto and how we treat our natural treasures, as you said Balto Seppala. I was wondering, what do you think should have happened to Balto's body? What's your opinon, on what would be a proper thing to do with him. I think, they should have beried him with the statue or something. If not that, i think they shoud have (either in Cleveland or Nome) beried him, then given him a sorta tomb thing, with a statue of Balto and write about what he did and tell people to show their respects. I think that should have happened. For what Balto did, people should look at his grave and read it. They should find out about what he did, and like i siad, pay respect for him. Not look at him through a glass window. Though they do put on a good show in Cleveland, telling people about Balto and all. But i think he should have had a fancy, and respectable grave for poor old Balto.

You know? I came in to see the latest reply in this topic thread, and then I realized that I had never responded to THIS post! Sorry about that, Highland Wolf!
Er...personally, I'd have wanted to see them buried as well. However, I believe it is not my place to judge people who decided upon a path for these dogs long before I was born. NONE of us was around at that time, and so we cannot comprehend the feelings that were playing out at the time...on a small or a large scale (depending upon the particular dog in question). What's done is done. And, at the time, the people who decided upon stuffing and mounting Togo, Balto and Fritz felt they were doing right by each dog.
I have always said, no matter the historical situation, it is not our place to judge the actions of those in the past. Study, yes. Learn from it certainly. But WE weren't there. No matter what any of us may want to think or believe about ourselves and our own views on how impartial or fair-minded we may be, to judge the actions of people from events we were not witness to, or even alive for is, in my opinion, stupid. We have little to no frame of reference, and so we cannot possibly have an informed state of mind about the events of the past. We can only observe them as outsiders. And quite often, outsiders make bad judgement calls, and totally misinterpret history and the people who were immersed in it.
That's what I think...

Thats ok Seppala Personally i forgot about that post! I won't ever mind if you don't answer to something, i will always think there must be a sensible reason you didn't reply and if you just don't want to, thats fine as well of course! Thanks for replying back anyway
Well, i never really thought about it like that. Your right really. What's done is done. I appreciate that they did SOMETHING for Balto anyway, and even though people don't actully do it much anymore, stuffing was the way to go in those times. Just hope thats what Balto would have wanted!
