Maybe it's like this.
Sarafina is part of Mufasa's pride, and maybe she was out alone on a hunt and a warry male got to her, resulting in Nala being born. Mufasa, being a fair king, let her keep the cub.

Well, I think that Sarafina grew up with Mufasa, Taka and Sarabi. When she grew up, she mated with a male lion(Nala's Father) and he died, or left the pride or something.
That's what I beleive about Sarafina's past
She sure is a wonderul char, despite how small her part is
