The first picture is of St. Joseph's church in Nome (which was standing in 1925, and is a historical building...though it was moved from its original location).

The second is a gold dredge...a powered, mechanical device for dredging the sand at the surf level (and in estuaries) for gold.

Here are two topics, from the True Story folder, which can further explain these pics:

Lol
Right, well I'll try to find it! Maybe I even find something similar.....!!!

I don't think it exists, because some of the pictures that I saw of Nome back in the 1920-1930 stages, the frozen parts of the river didn't have any boats washed up and frozen in it. But you never know! :)

There is no abandoned fishing boat washed up in the high-tide shallows of Norton Sound. Not in the position shown in the movie, that's for sure. And likely not elsewhere either. The position shown in the cartoon would be southeast of Nome, along the shoreline...and that is open (except for a gravel road running out further along the coast.

No, the boat is a work of pure fiction. Nice, but fiction nevertheless...

That's St. Joseph's Church. The main beacon for mushers in the Iditarod and for Kaasen as he pulled up with the serum!

This seems to be a very old topic  I didn't even know it was here! When was this section opened? Nevermind, well, those photos do look very similar. This has been mentioned in other topics here, I thought Nome looked very good in Balto, and I am very glad!
