I believe it's made several fanfics, though I mean to do something of that order myself... eventually.

I don't doubt it. Too bad I don't get into Balto fanfics. *shrug*
Might've once upon a time, but that was a while ago and I've moved onto other interests since then.

I agree that a prequel would be a very interesting approach to a Balto series, but I don't think it would be the absolute best. A series that takes place after the serum run wouldn't be too hard to pull off or be completely useless. If a sequel series were properly done, we'd find out about what the other dogs think of Balto, if there's anyone that still have prejudice against him for being part wolf, what his relationship with Steele would be, how his relationship with Jenna starts off, if he remains known as the town hero or just gets 15 minutes of fame and is outcast again, etc.

Yes I realize that many of you believe that Balto's children don't have any purpose and shouldn't be included in the series if there was one. But a series would be the chance to give them a purpose. Like JC said, it wasn't their fault they turned out to be not too decent or terrible characters, it was lousy writing from the producers. Have some episodes where they spend time with their dad and help him sort out or deal with conflicts or have them as the antagonist and Balto as the one that has to help them, while teaching an important morale or life lesson. It would give his children a meaningful purpose and bring them into the light some more, while still retaining Balto as the main character. Whatever those episode plots may be is up to whoever wants to create the possibility.

All in all, there are two ways to settle on a Balto series. Prequel and sequel. You can either settle for one, or kill two birds with one stone and do both. Some episodes take place after the movies, some showcase his childhood through flashbacks. That to me, seems like the best approach to a Balto series.

Again I can't see either a movie or series happening with this, but it would make a nice fan fic...

It might make a nice fan fic, but then, you said you don't read fan fics.

And you have to consider that, at least historically, the diphtheria epidemic took Nome completely by surprise, and that the illness wasn't immediately identified for the dire threat it really was. The town's only doctor, Curtis Welch, misidentified the first few cases as much less-serious matters (sore throats, etc.). So I am not sure that would be an angle to take. But Nome's history is replete with potentially good story arcs. And again, there is the matter of the Balto character's own youth and background.

Never said I'd read it though. I just like stating the obvious. 8U
(Also more of a hint to fans to give up hopes on a series or another sequel and stick to fan works.)

Ah. Good point. I don't know the true story to that extent, so if I were in charge of the series (as the topic's title says), I'd certainly call in an expert on the subject when writing the episodes. Like yourself. ;]

What kind of story arcs are we talking here, JC? Gold mining, things like that?

One storyline could be Amundsen's trip to the North Pole and how his dirigible laned near Nome after coming all the way from Svalbard in the Atlantic. Another could involve the building if a rail line and the issue if Alaskan Indian land rights in and around Nome.

While those are each good story concepts, Baron, they are actually not good story concepts for a Balto-oriented movie. Remember the movie has to revolve around the main character. Those stories have nothing whatsoever to do with him...fictionalized Balto or real Balto.

I realize that. I'm just trying to add a bit of realism to Balto's fictional world, fictional in the sense of being an animated movie.

What about my previous idea involving the boat "Helen W."?

Quote:
Basically, the series would be involving the history of the beached ship that is Balto's home. These would be a couple years later with the girl Rosy being in her late teens. I had thought what if a young man called Mark Wainwright came to Nome in search of his past? The young man could be an orphan who is now old enough to be on his own. So he works his way up to Nome with nothing except a backpack, a young Husky dog by the name of Denali, and an old photo of his father, two sailors , and dog companion on a ship, the "Helen W." On the back of the photo is a caption: "Nome-- 1914. Garrett Wainwright Arrives Home with Balto."

I was going to have this romance thing going on between Rosy and Mark, as well as Rosy's dog falling in love with Mark's dog, Denali. The point being that the two fall in love with one another as Mark endeavors to find out about his father, Garrett Wainwright. As he does so, he meets Balto and the cast from the movies. Eventually his search leads him to the wrecked ship, which only bygone tales say it shipwrecked there many years ago.

And that's where my screenplay unfortunately stopped. I had school so I couldn't finish it but I intend to now. I was going to have this tragic love story surrounding what had happened to the ship that would lead it to be shipwrecked outside of Nome. Also, Balto's dad would be in the story.
In other words, if Mark Wainwright finds out what happened to the ship and to his presumed dead father, he would also find out what happened to Balto's dad. As the story unfolded, Balto learns that he is named after his father, whom Garrett Wainwright have rescued off the streets of Nome. He and Garrett then traveled together onboard the Helen W. So their pasts are connected.

I'll be honest-- even I'm not sure if this idea could work.

What my idea involving the boat "Helen W."?

Quote:

Well, I'm not trying to be a pain here, but if you're trying to add realism into that fictionalized version of the real Alaska of the 1920s, there are a few basic problems with the scenarios you have put forth:

A. The 1926 Flight of the Norge (Amundsen's North Pole trip) -- again, while it could be tied in with the broader running Balto storyline, it would, I think, compete with it. And historically it really has no ties to the Balto character or his real-life counterpart. To Nome, yes...being a rallying point for Amundsen. But little else.

B. The Native land rights thing -- while the Inupiaq and Athabascans certainly must have been irritated by the increasing presence of Americans, Europeans and Asians and their tearing up of the land, actual Native land rights issues did not come to the forefront (and become news-worthy) until the 1960s, when big American corporations started drilling for the oil deposits they found evidence of on the North slope and beyond. Before that, the Natives had found a way to grudgingly co-exist with the increasing foreign presence.

C. The Helen W -- Point of fact, the Helen W was a steam tug which operated miles north of Nome, in the region of the Native fishing village of Teller...in the 1940s. By then, the real Balto had died. And even a fictionalized Balto would have certainly passed on by then. Balto's boat, as seen in the Balto movies, was already in a state of disrepair and several years' worth of decay. Absolutely contrary...if your intent was to identify that boat as the Helen W anyway...

Just sayin'...

Darn! Another idea out the window. I am appreciative of your feedback--and your knowledge of None and Alaska is incredible!

Don't worry-- I have a bunch of half-baked ideas floating in my head. Here's some more I thought of:

1) A story involving a lost gold mine (?)
2) The Return of Steele (plot somewhat inspired by "Aladdin and the Return of Jafar")--somehow Steele gets the town of Nome to turn against Balto as a plot for revenge.
3) A Balto and CALL OF THE WILD/WHITE FANG (by Jack London) crossover story?

1) I can see potential there. When gold is involved, a lot of chaos can ensue.
2) It's been done a lot of times, but it's still got possibilities. I wouldn't let the fact that it's been covered before get in the way; if it's new to you, then it's new enough.
3) I could see something of that order. Are we talking about the original one by Jack London or one of the many White Fang variations?
