Adam:: He nodded some and walked across the street with her. He didn't pay it much attention that she was acting weird. He walked in the diner, waiting for his son to go in first. Adam looked at a bunch of people and then went to the booth with Sarah. He sat across from her, letting Sage sit on the outside of the seat. Adam put his elbows on the table and rubbed his head slightly. He looked over at the waitress as she walked over to take their order. 'Can I take your order folks?' She asked and smiled at Adam, 'Hi officer.' She and giggled. Hi, staying out of trouble? The waitress nodded and laughed some. 'So what can I get ya'll?' Sage spoke up, 'Can I have a burger and a small fries please?' The waitress nodded and wrote it down. I'll take a burger and a large coke. He said and looked over at Sarah. He knew she was texting under the table because it was so obvious. He could see her phone screen against her eyes. Adam looked at the waitress again as she wrote down the order.

Adam:: He looked at her. I'm a police officer, a retired marine. He said and looked at the way she was sitting. Sage looked her over too and sighed some. Adam watched as the same waitress brought out their food and put it in front of them. Adam leaned back some on his seat. He wasn't really that hungry. Sage began eating his food. 'Dad can I have a sip?' He asked nicely. Adam nodded and moved the drink over to him. Sage thanked his father and took a sip, placing the cup down on the table again. Adam took a sip himself. What about you, what line of work are you in? He asked. He really wasn't interested but he thought he'd be nice and ask anyway. Adam ate some of his burger and looked at Sarah again.

Sage:: He looked at her when she asked him the question. I like football and baseball. He said and slouched in his seat. He didn't like talking much to people he just met. He was a quiet kid and he wanted everyone to understand that he lost his mother and he wasn't looking for another one. Sage leaned on his father some but Adam didn't tolerate that much, He nudged him and Sage sat up. Finishing his food and leaning on Adam again. I don't feel to good dad. He said and looked up at his father. Honestly, he felt fine but he couldn't stay another minute with this lady. Adam looked at him and then at Sarah. 'I guess we'll get going. Thanks for lunch.' He said, pulling out some money. When the waitress came by to collect the trash Adam slid the money on the tray. Giving her a $20 tip. Adam stood up and so did Sage. Sage walked out of the booth and neared the door. Pulling his jacket on a bit tighter.

Adam:: He nodded. As Sage and he exited the diner Adam nudged him. He looked down at his son. That was just an excuse to leave wasn't it? Adam knew Sage's game. He taught Sage better than that but if Sage wasn't ready to meet new people he wasn't going to force him to. Sage sighed and nodded, 'Am I in trouble?' Sage asked. No. He said and kept walking. The small bell above the door rung out when Adam opened the door. Walking down the road, Adam's friend walked over. Joining them. Everyone knew that he and Adam were the best of friends. They were on the police force with each other. Both field agents. Adam looked over at his friend, Jake was his name. 'So what were you doing in the diner?' Jake asked, just curious. Having lunch with a girl. Jake nodded. He had lost his wife years ago. She had been shot down by a guy he was trying to find and arrest/kill.

Adam:: He looked at Sage as they neared home. Sage, do you think you can handle being alone for about an hour or two? He said and looked forward again. Sage nodded, 'Yes sir.' he said, knowing he would be okay with Jinx there with him. Adam nodded and dug deep into his pocket, digging out a spare house key and handing it to Sage. Don't loose it. He said and put his hand on Sage's back. You go on home, I'll stand here and watch till you get inside. He said and Sage nodded, jogging the 2 blocks to his house. Sage opened the door and stopped, looking at Adam and waving to him. Adam raised his hand and turned away. He and Jake were going to hang out in a bar for a few minutes, they just wanted to hang out a little bit.

Adam:: He was never known to get drunk and he'd always have that reputation. He was aloud to have at least 2 shots and then he'd have to quit. Adam walked in the bar, everyone sober immediately put their drinks down and talked. The drunk ones tired to leave the bar as soon as they could. Adam looked at Jake, they were eye to eye with each other. Adam order 1 shot of any type of drink and Jake ordered the same. They were served immediately, the bartender trying to direct their attention away from everyone that was drinking and trying to start fights. One lady walked by Adam and brushed up against him. Adam didn't pay her much attention, in fact, he didn't even spare her a glance. Jake looked around, he wanted Stacey(His dead wife) back so bad. He wanted her to be there with him, for her to be sitting in his lap and telling him how much she loved him and needed him. Adam looked at his friend and then down at the little shot glass.

Adam:: He had one more drink and so did Jake, before they both left the bar. Adam had payed the bartender of course but the bartender still make smirks at him as he left. Adam didn't notice as he made the walk home. He did notice however that Sarah was unloading her truck. He decided it best not to say anything. He wasn't the type to talk to anyone for to long really. Adam kept forward, Jake had turned off and went to his beach house miles away. Adam couldn't understand why Jake would want to walk. He could drive his truck, he had a nice one. Adam shook his head and made it to his porch, unlocking the door with his key and walking in. It was about dusk now and he had to get dinner made for Sage. Jinx ran over to Adam, sniffing his jacket and jeans, wagging his tail wildly. Adam stood in the kitchen, pulling his jacket off. He turned the oven on and put some chicken in, putting some BBQ sauce on them. He walked in the living room to find Sage clutching a picture of his mother, wiping tears off the glass and off his cheeks. Adam took a deep breath and stood in the doorway. Sage looked up at his father.
Dad, i-it's just not fair. She didn't do anything wrong. Sage said, his voice cracking.
I know, sometimes things happen for a reason, maybe god just didn't want her to suffer anymore. So he took her to live with him and the angels. She never left, she's sitting on a cloud, watching over us. Adam said, taking his hands out of his pockets.
I want to hug her again, I want her to great me every morning. I just want her back! Sage said again and cried harder. Adam walked over to his son and put an arm around him. "Wipe your face." Adam said, Sage doing so. Adam looked at him. Now listen to me. She left because she was in pain and wasn't strong enough to go through it anymore okay? Would you rather see her suffer, or know she's at peace now? Sage sniffled and grabbed a tissue. Wiping his nose. Go wash up for dinner. Adam said and looked at his son once more, Sage placing the photo on the table and walking to the bathroom. Adam sighed and looked at the picture, he missed her too. Adam stood and went to the kitchen, making some corn and mash potatoes to go along with the BBQ chicken.

Sage:: He looked at his self in the mirror. Red eyes and red nose, he looked a mess. Sage dug into his pocket, he was missing the paper with his house number on it. He was going to give it to the girl he liked. Since he thought she was pretty. Sage sighed, washing his hands and taking a cool rag and holding it on his face until the redness went down. He took his time leaving the bathroom, wanting to just stay there and cry more. He sighed again, turning the light off and walking to the kitchen. He took a seat at the table. Do I walk to college for my class? He asked, Adam putting a plate down in front of him. The aroma of BBQ chicken and potatoes filled his nose. Adam looked at him, 'I could drive you or get you a bike like you want.' He said, getting himself a plate. Sage lit up a little. Can you drive me to college tomorrow? He asked nicely. Adam nodded, sitting down in front of him with his plate. Sage smiled some but just barely. Sage began eating and smiled some. So, I was gonna ask this girl I really like to the upcoming dance this Friday. Do you think you could get me a suit? It's a formal dance. Adam looked up at his son and sat back a little bit. Adam gave it a bit of thought and nodded. Sage put a big smile on his face. Your the best dad. He said, shoveling a bit more food into his mouth. Sage looked at his father, he had never asked this question before. Dad, how did you meet mom and why did she like you so much? He said, finishing his potatoes.
Adam looked up at him again, swallowing his food before speaking. I met her in school, thought she was pretty and just the girl for me so I talked to her a little bit and got to know her really well. She gave me her number and I called her every night. Her parents were okay, didn't trust us alone though. Since we were in the 7th grade and love was just so new to us. He took a sip of water. I just learned to love her. Went to the same college together, since we had went to different high schools. A week after we graduated from college and got our own place, I asked her to be my wife. Adam said and looked at him.
Sage nodded. Yeah, but why did she say yes? Trying to make it not sound rude.
Adam shrugged. She said it was the way I acted and the fairness I treated people with. I wasn't mean or crazy like the other boys were. I was just a mellow and quiet guy, like how you are. Sage nodded some. Beginning to eat his chicken. Adam was already almost finished with his plate, he had stuff to do and needed to hurry up a little. When they finished Adam stood, taking their plates and washing them. So tell me about this girl. He said to Sage.
Sage took a deep breath. Well, she had really pretty eyes and she is just a sweet girl. She is popular but she always gives me the eye when I walk by her. The flirty face. Adam chuckled and looked at him.
