Hey, Flutterby, I'm confused about the "girl" that Rory has. Did you mean that Rory has a girlfriend, or that his female horse is his "girl"? Sorry, but that really confused me, because I wasn't certain about what you meant when you said that Rory "had his own girl". See Ya Later, Dixie Baby

Hey, Flutterby, Thanks for the clarification! See Ya' Later, Dixie Baby ---------------------------------------------------- "I'm ready to try again!", announced the red-haired girl, her voice ringing with fierce, selfish pride. With her nose to the air, she glanced down at Biff with a glare of savage importance. When Morgan had gave her the time cue, she smiled devilishly. "Go...and WIN!", she whispered, slapping Biff as lightly as her aroused temper would allow. The stallion whinnied in a reactionary way, dashing forward at a reckless speed. As Biff raced towards the hurdle, Jacklyn kept her face stony, but her breathing quickened slightly, revealing an uncertainty that brewed within her gut. Leaping with all of his strength, Biff began to fly madly, and then, suddenly, one of his back hooves caught on the middle of the side of the hurdle. As the entire hurdle fell with the horse, Jacklyn felt herself being thrown, and yet, she held fast to Biff's mane, even as she sailed away from him, losing her grip and flipping in mid-air. Through the confusion, Jacklyn heard the scream of a teenaged girl, but she couldn't tell weather she was hearing Blaine or Morgan. As her head hit the ground, she mentally willed herself to get up, but her body refused to respond. Keeping her eyes open, even through the jarring feeling that her fall had struck her with, Jacklyn tried to find Biff. Where WAS he? Was he okay? Feeling a hand upon her arm, Jacklyn fought to speak. "Don't you DARE help me up!", she heard herself screaming. Sensing her own surprising tears of remorse and shame, she gulped, gasping "I'm FINE! I'm fine. I'M alright. SEE?" Two sets of hands helped her up anyway, but she struggled to find Biff. "Where IS he? Where IS he?", she gasped, twisting and struggling, even as she nearly screamed from the pain of trying to set her left foot on the ground. A female voice told her to be as calm as she could, but she tried to wrench free of the hands that helped her along, crying, "No! You don't UNDERSTAND! He's my entire LIFE! He's my EVERYTHING! Where IS he?" She struggled more and more with every second, until she had finally wrenched herself free. As she turned, squealing from the pain that seared her entire left leg, her eyes widened, and she took in a deep, hollow breath. "No!", she intoned, disbelieving, for there, before her eyes, lay Biff, upon HIS left side, whinnying lightly in such a distracted, pained tone that she knew that his future was far from bright. Looking up from her fallen, dethroned Clydesdale, she cast a wide-eyed, prayerful stare upon not Blaine, but Morgan, a stare that said " YOU know how this feels! What should I do NOW?" ------------------------------------------------------ See Ya' Later, Dixie Baby

The VET?, thought Jacklyn suddenly, even as Morgan and Rory helped her to lie down on the ground. The VET? Why isn't she concerned about ME, TOO?
Crying loudly to herself, Jacklyn forced herself to roll onto her right side, sobbing through the pain. Morgan told her to roll over onto her back again, but she responded by glaring up at the older girl.
"I HATE you, Morgan!", she practically screamed. "I hate YOU, and your stupid SISTER, and...and CORY, or whatever HIS name is!" Choking on her sobs, she coughed loudly, dramatically.
"I don't WANT your help! YOU'RE all about YOURSELF, and HE'S just...here to FLIRT with you and BLAINE..." She winced, crying because of more than just physical pain. "Oh, and BLAINE...as for HER, well, SHE'S apparently ONLY interested in the HORSES, because SHE doesn't care about ME at ALL!"
Morgan's reply was kind, even in its harshness, but Jacklyn cast a cruel glare right into her eyes, crying, "Don't you SEE, you spoiled JERK? I'll NEVER ride AGAIN!"
As Morgan turned away, gasping through fresh tears, Rory shot a surprisingly hurt look at Jacklyn, as if to say, "YOU never had to go through what SHE went through with HER horse! How DARE you be so cruel?" As he, too, turned away to embrace Morgan in a comforting hug, Jacklyn took in a deep breath.
"Hey, WAIT, Cory! Morgan? WAIT, PLEASE, DARN IT!"
This time, Blaine was at her side, holding her hand, urging her to be silent and restful.
"I...thought that nobody CARED, Blaine! I wasn't even sure that..." Did she dare to admit the truth to her idol? "I wasn't even sure that YOU...cared, because...you LEFT me!" Her tears overtook her, and she cried selfishly, even as her friend stroked her hair gently.
"I...I'll never ride AGAIN, WILL I?", she asked, suddenly feeling ashamed, furious, and scared all at once. she didn't DARE to think about her poor, brave horse, because she COULDN'T be that selfless, for fear of what the reality might be, even if it was only a truly awful mental reality of imagined brokenness and defeat. ---------------------------------------------------------- See Ya' Later, Dixie Baby

Blaine placed her hand on Jacklyn's shoulder. "Our mother, Is a vet. She'll help." She tried to comfort her but Jacklyn was very restless. "Biff is going to be fine. He'll run again." Blaine wasn't positive, but she knew Jacklyn loved him very much. "Let me tell you somthing, hun. My first horse, Bull, did something very similar to what just happend." At that moment, Blaine and Morgan's mother raced outside. "Girls, Go inside. I'll take care of the horse." She said, stroking Biff. Blaine led Jacklyn inside. "I got Bull when I was five." She said, taking a book of a shelf and flipping through pages in what looked like a photo album. She finnaly found the one of Bull, and pointed at it. "There he is. My big boy." Her eyes filled with tears. "Bull and I were jumping hurdles much larger than the one we were doing. He hit one, I lost control and he crashed into he next jump." Blaine wiped her tears. "It was all my fault. Bull had to be retired. To this day he still has trouble getting around." She flipped trough a few more pages and found all the ones of Bull. "You can't tell anybody! Only you and Morgan know! Don't tell Rory!" Blaine almost shouted. "I didn't want you to go through what I went through.."

Jacklyn shook her head, deep in thought. Suddenly the pain that she was whining about didn't seem quite so much of a big deal. "I...I feel...STUPID, Blaine!", she admitted, unable to meet Blaine's eyes with anything more than a quick, upward flick of her own. "I never even THOUGHT that YOU'D ever been through...anything like THAT!" When her idol again requested a promise of secrecy, Jacklyn nodded enthusiastically. "I SWEAR that I'll never tell ANYBODY, Blaine!", she said, holding her right hand up beside her face, in a promisary gesture. She was about to ask Blaine a few questions that suddenly nagged at her mind, but she thought better of upsetting her idol, and THEN she decided to risk her feelings for the chance to know the truth. "Blaine?", she began, tenatively gasping from the pain that still held her leg within its grip. The older girl responded typically, with an interested "What?", and Jacklyn took a deep breath. "Blaine? How was it that nobody except for Morgan knew about Bull's accident? I mean, didn't your MOM find out somehow? Why have you kept your hurdling accident a secret, anyway? I mean..." She was about to say that ALL riders have falls now and then, but she closed her eyes, ashamed, afraid to embarrass Blaine, who was such an extremely good rider. Blaine began to answer the younger girl's questions, but, all of a sudden, Jacklyn smiled; looking directly at Blaine, she blushingly asked, "Do you have a crush on Rory? Do you REALLY like him?" -------------------------------------------------- See Ya' Later, Dixie Baby

"My mom knows. She was the one who decided he needed to be retired." Blaine said, feeling slightly better. The tears cleared from her eyes and she smiled some. Then, She was surprised by Jacklyn's next question. She blushed and said, "Well, He's nice and all, but I have to put my horses before a boy.. and I'm sure he puts his horses before some girl." She laughed a little but then was serious. "If he found out, He might not treat me the same.." She turned away. "Lets go see Bull.." She said and walked out the front door. She hurried out to the barn, and called his name. "Bull! Here boy!" Blaine went in the barn and grabbed two apples. She handed one to Jacklyn. She peeked outside the barn and there stood Bull. Head held high, pawing the ground. "Hi Bull." Blaine said sweetly, giving him the apple. Bull's ribs and hip bones were showing, but he was happy. "Mom said he has to go before winter." Blaine said petting Bull's soft nose. "He's 29 years old.."

"Oooh!", breathed Jacklyn, trying to ignore the pain that was still causing her to feel slightly woozy. The old horse looked at her, his still-attentive ears perked forward, his dark eyes serious and slightly scared. Jacklyn leaned against the stable wall, breathing in a labored fashion, wishing that she could just see a doctor. Suddenly, her recent resentments resurfaced, and, narrowing her eyes, but trying to temper her mood, she looked at Blaine. "Shouldn't I see a DOCTOR?", she asked. "I mean, even IF nothing's BROKEN, I'm STILL...still going to need some help, because I don't know how much more time I can spend on one FOOT...without...fainting..." She hoped to heck that Blaine would see how pale she must look by now. "I mean, my MOTHER is going to be FURIOUS with me, anyway! She and Dad do NOT like spending their money for MEDICAL reasons, and THIS news about ME will just drive them both INSANE!" Lowering her head, Jacklyn felt herself crying all over again, suddenly feeling like a burden to both her parents AND Blaine. "Even if I'M fine...even if BIFF survives..." She thought better of her selfishness, looking at Blaine. "Well, even if he gets well in a HURRY," she said quickly, "my PARENTS will NEVER let me ride AGAIN!" Taking in a ragged breath, she hobbled towards Blaine, hoping for a hug, or at least a shoulder to lean upon.

Blaine stroked Bull's neck as Jacklyn spoke. She put her arm around Jacklyn's shoulder and gave her gentle squeeze then said, "Biff's accident wasn't near as bad as Bull's, he won't have to be retired." Blaine continued stroking the old horse and then sighed. "Well, my mom is a vet, so she should know a little about taking care of humans." She chucked a little, then said "Let's go. Bye Bull, you be a good boy now." Blaine said, slowly walking out of the barn with Jacklyn leaning up against her.

Blaine's shoulder felt comfortably warm and secure, and suddenly Jacklyn felt guilty about being so pessimistic about Biff. "It's unfortunate about Bull," she said. "He must really have BEEN something back in his hayday!" Looking up at Blaine, wide-eyed and full of admiration, she smiled fondly. When Blaine nodded silently, Jacklyn nudged her playfully. "If it's any comfort...he'll always be your favorite horse, right?" Blaine didn't nod this time, but Jacklyn took a deep breath through her pain. "If he's your favorite horse, then THAT means that he'll ALWAYS love you, forever and EVER, no matter WHAT!" As Jacklyn's eyes met Blaine's, the younger girl's enthusiastic smile melted, and she wiped the tears from one side of her idol's face. "I'm sorry," she whispered, hanging her head. "I shouldn't presume to know exactly what you're going through with Bull, because BIFF is going to..." She didn't dare finish her sentence, and she was suddenly ever so slightly afraid of Blaine, even though the older girl held her steadily as the two of them walked into Blaine's house. Jacklyn winced, but, even through her haze of pain, she couldn't believe that somebody of Blaine's admirable character would just give up on a horse like that! "There MUST be a way to save him...or, or SOMETHING...that can be done!", she blurted out determinedly, hopping forward more quickly. Looking up at Blaine, she saw that the older rider's calmly fixed expression wasn't going anywhere. Sighing with exasperation, Jacklyn broke away from Blaine, seating herself in the chair that stood before that same coffee table at which the two girls had looked at the photo album. "Don't give up, Blaine!" was all that she could manage to say, and she was surprised by the commanding tone of her own voice. Before Blaine could say a word, Morgan walked into the room with a tray of hot, sweetly-scented cookies. Placing the tray on the coffee table, she bent to give Jacklyn a hug, and Jacklyn whispered an embarrassed "I'm sorry." as kindly as she could. Behind Morgan stood the local boy, Rory, and even though he was smiling, he wrapped his arm about Morgan's shoulders protectively as soon as she broke away from the hug that she'd been giving to Jacklyn. "Hi..." Morgan said his name out loud, and Jacklyn blushed. "Hi, Rory!", she said quickly. "Thank you for the cookies, Morgan!" Morgan closed her eyes, sighing awkwardly, and when she announced the fact that RORY had baked the cookies, Jacklyn wanted more than anything to crawl underneath the chair from embarrassment! "Oh!", she said, shrinking into the chair, staring up at the bespectacled boy as she swallowed nervously. "Thanks...Rory," she practically whispered. "I'll bet that they're the best cookies in the WORLD!" Rory suggested that she should actually TRY them, and even though her throat was suddenly dry, she chose a cookie from the tray; biting into the sugary, chewy-soft cookie, she let its sweet, spicy aroma melt some of her pain away.
