It's a bit long, so sorry about that, but I was having this discussion over tumblr, and this was my argument. It was to someone saying that the Lion King movies are all about incest. -.-
Kovu is not Simba’s or Scar’s so there have been other males, just no other alpha male like Mufasa, Simba or Scar, which were in charge of the pride. There is a possibility then that there were other lions around, rogue lions perhaps mated with lionesses, that didn’t appear in the movies.
Nuka is believed to be the only cub that Scar fathered, although that is uncertain. The truth is Disney have never confirmed if Scar fathered ANY cubs at all. So all this is speculation. But Nuka aside, Kovu is definately not Scar’s cub. ’ Scar’s not even his father. We just took him in ’ (Nuka —about Kovu to Vitani- LK2:SP) As the last cub born before Scar’s death, Kovu was hand chosen to be his successor.
Nala is not named as a princess like Kiara, so again, it urges thought that there is another father somewhere. Rogue male lions are a common sight in the wild, and they remain separate from any prides. Until the rogue challenges an alpha male, wins, and in turn becomes alpha male himself, gaining the pride. In fact, Scar was classed as a loner, and so would likely have been a rogue. Explains his hesitance to participate in Mufasa’s kingdom. When Scar killed the alpha male (Mufasa), he was then alpha male. This would have happened regardless of Simba. He was too young.
Zira comes in to it as a supporter of Scar, when he became King. And the pair mate. This is after Scar's failed attempts to woo Nala (sorry head in the stage show), and Zira is a eager mate, due to her thirst for power. A power which is taken away, when Simba defeats Scar and becomes alpha male. This is where the pride breaks in two, pride landers and outsiders. And Zira wants to claim back what she is sure is rightfully hers, to rule over the pride lands.
