Zac nodded. "It doesn't seem like you have a great pair of parents. They are what they are, though, I guess..." He paused, remembering his own pair of maternal adults. "I had to leave mine behind. To this day they have no idea where I am. I felt awful about it, but... ever since the dare and the woods, I couldn't go back. It'd only be dangerous. And by the time I gained enough strength to control it for the most part, I couldn't go back even then. Because, not only would anger transform me, but they'd ask questions of where I was all those months. They'd wonder where I'd go every full moon."

He looked up at the sun, then remembered something about vampires. He turned to Griffin. "I wonder how he can walk in the sun... Last time I saw him he fled at dawn..." Zac didn't exactly say it directly to Ashlyn, as it was a bit more hushed than his previous statements, but it still could have been answered by her.

Though, just that moment, he heard Amber... bark? Must be a dog again, He thought. And with that he headed off to the creek, following her trail by her pawprints.

Griffin noticed Zac take off, and he heard the bark too, and slowly followed, his hands in his pockets.

Ashlyn looked at him sympathetically, then turned to Griffin when Zac mentioned his being in the sunlight. Until now, Ash hadn't thought about things that could harm them, such as the sun, and she tilted her head. Hearing the bark, she watched Zac go off into the forest, following Amber's paw-prints. However, Griffin was moving at a far slower pace. Ash walked up behind him and put her hand on his shoulder. Although she wanted to know how exactly he was in the sun, she felt that this moment was not the best moment to answer.

She heard the bark again and looked to where Zac had disappeared into the trees. Ash looked back at Griffin once more and wondered if she should walk with him or head off in front. Shrugging her shoulders, she decided if Griffin didn't want company, she'd leave. But if he did, she'd stay.

Amber sat down as she waited for the others to gather, dipping her paws into the creek one after another. She suddenly noticed little fish in the middle of the creek, swimming around in the deepest parts. Amber crouched down and pulled herself forward, the cold water lapping at her fur. The deeper she got, the colder the water way. Eventually she made it to the middle, and even though it was only about five feet deep, it was much to high for Amber's paws to touch the ground. She nipped at some of the fish but they quickly swam away and she gave up. Back on shore, she shook the water off her pelt and hoped one of the others didn't notice her failed attempt at fishing.

If you could call that fishing.. She chuckled to herself.

Griffin's eyes suddenly shot up when a hand touched his shoulder. He would have glared at anyone else, but since it was Ashlyn, he managed to pull off a sincere smile. "Sorry about your parents," He sympathized. It was the most thoughtful statement he had said all day. It was almost as if he were a different person now that both facts stacked up against each other. Not only was Ashlyn here with him, but they were free of the werewolf for the moment. He breathed a deep breath of relief.

Zac had gotten to the creek in the moment when Amber was trying to fish. He had been silent enough so that she couldn't hear him, but when she came on shore and attempted to dry her coat, he couldn't help but let out a soft laugh. "First time fishing as a canine?" He gave a grin. "It'll get easier, trust me." His eyes showed a gentle, understanding look. He sat down by the red and white dog, and pet her head calmly. "Do you mind?" He smiled again.

"It's alright, really. They still love me." She smiled back at him and the question nagged at her mind until she just couldn't hold it in anymore. She turned and swiftly moved to stand in front of Griffin, "How do you manage to be in the sunlight if you're a vampire, Griffin?" She asked, finding that walking backwards on the rocks and grass was more difficult then it would look. She nearly tripped but quickly regained her balance and simply waited patiently for Griffin's answer.

Amber blushed underneath her fur and sat down, looking down at her paws. She heard Griffin sit next to her and start to pet her head. "Not at all. I'm a dog aren't I? Dogs are meant to be petted." She grinned and looked back into the water. "Anyway, I was just playing. I don't really like fish." She admitted and tilted her head to look through the trees. Griffin and Ashlyn better hurry up. This really is no time for them to drag their feet. She thought crossly.

Griffin nodded, but a smile began pulling at his lips when Ashlyn asked why he could walk in the sun. "Well, that old myth is actually true, believe it or not." A smile surfaced. "Though it wouldn't be so hard to believe." He turned to look at the flaming orb he should have been burning crisp under. He then turned to look at Ash. "See this chain necklace?" He fingers grasped the metal softly. "It was charmed by a witch. I was kinda going on a killing spree in her town... and she wanted me to stop and move on from the place. She didn't want anyone else to get hurt. So, in return of my going, she offered me a charmed chain necklace that could let me become a day walker. One of the very few vampires who can walk around at daytime. Neat, huh?" His smile disappeared suddenly. "It's also made of silver." He spaced out looking into the forest, but slowly got himself to turn back to Ashlyn finally. "So the werewolves think twice before trying to come near me."

Zac smiled, and suddenly got an idea. "Well, you may not like fish, but have you ever tried the stuff straight from the river?" He asked gently. "Maybe the type you're used to eating is farmed and tame. The real taste comes from the fish who are wild and free." He gave an ever bigger smile and transformed into his wolf self. He slowly padded into the river and glared down closely at all the swimming fish. He tried to find one who seemed to be thrashing through the soft current slowly. While Amber had had a tough time from the water's height, it reached up to Zac's shoulders, due to his massive height. When he finally decided to go for it, he leapt at the chance. The huge black muzzle of his darted into the cold river stream. It wasn't long before the one he had been glaring at was now in his long white jaws. He swiftly threw it at Amber and then padded up to the shore. Shaking his huge pelt first, Zac then proceeded to lie down next to Amber. "Mind if I lie next to you?" He whispered softly.

Ashlyn grabbed the chain in her hand an examined it. "Interesting." She mumbled and let go of it, letting it fall back down to Griffin's chest. She looked into the forest and could already hear the sounds of the creek flowing. Without thinking, Ash grabbed his hand and pulled him into the trees. She could see a massive wolf jumped into the creek, most likely Zac, and she watched as he threw a large, amber colored fish at a red and white dog that stood at the creek bed. She caught it in her jaws and set it on the ground, poking it with her paw.

"Come on, Griffin! The others are here already!" She pulled harder on his hand and walked towards the other two.

Amber watched intently as Zac caught a large, amber colored fish and tossed it her way. She pushed back on her haunches and leapt into the air, catching the fish in her jaws. The fish was surprisingly heavier than she thought it would be, and landed on the ground unsteadily. Dropping the fish onto the creek bed, Amber extended her paw to poke at the fish. It had stopped it's weak wiggling and now lay still, dead. She sniffed at the wet creature and poked it with her nose. This fish smelled much better then the fish she ate at her Grandmother's. She felt Zac's fur lightly brush hers as he lay down beside her.

"I don't mind at all. Fish?" She replied, pushing the fish towards him and taking a bite out of it's side. The flavor was surprisingly wonderful and sang with the flavors of the woodland around them. She took another bite and chewed happily.

Griffin was about to smile, but nearly hissed when Ashlyn started pulling him. Not necessarily at that fact, but because she was taking him closer to the werewolf. The surprise of being touched when no one had laid a finger on him for years was enough to keep him in shock. But the reminder of his past once again when he saw the huge black wolf beside the dog should have sent him off the edge.

He tried his best to keep his calm, because he didn't really want to hurt Ashlyn. However, if he snapped he couldn't help anything that happened. "Yeah, is it alright if I stay a bit back?" He asked as gently as he could, though there was still a strain evident in his voice. "I'd rather not get too close..."

Zac smiled at Amber and took the fish. "Sure," he breathed and took a tiny bite out of it before placing it between them. His ears flicked up when he heard the crackling of twigs and the ruffling of leaves. He got up slowly, though refused to turn back to his human form for the moment. He saw Ash and Griffin coming through the trees and relaxed. Though, it seemed Griffin didn't want to walk any closer. Intruiged at the way he was acting, more gentle and fearful than mad, he took a few hesitant steps.

Griffin stepped back as the werewolf came closer, though said nothing.

Zac continued to walk closer until Griffin was backed up against a tree. He hissed as quietly as possible and glared up at the wolf, who wasn't too much taller than him. "Get back." He said, with a dangerous note in his voice. Though, he wasn't looking at the wolf now. He was looking at Ashlyn. His eyes turned soft as he forgot about the huge black creature in front of him.

Zac tilted his head and took one more step.

Griffin snapped out of it and turned back to the wolf. "I mean it, were. Unless you want me to brush a silver fork down your spine the next chance I get." He said menacingly.

Zac seemed both amused and surprised by his threat. "I don't think so, vampire. You're not in a position to threaten me. Just take a look where you stand," he said, managing to somehow get the message across. It sounded like a mix of human english and canine muttering.

Griffin took a look around and glared back at the wolf, feeling slightly defeated. All around were trees, behind his arched back, was a tree. Wood was everywhere, and if he made one wrong move or word, the werewolf was in a great position to push his chest against one of the branches and end him. "What do you want?" he asked.

Ashlyn pushed through the trees, pulling Griffin gently so that he didn't touch the bark. She stopped at a small clearing close to the creek and nodded. "I can see that you aren't too fond of Zac." She murmured understandingly. She let go of his hand and glared at Zac as he came closer, deliberately invading Griffin's comfort zone. Even though Ash said nothing, her eyes burned with hostility. She wasn't going to try and defend Griffin, she could tell that he wouldn't be too thrilled with her interference.

Amber followed closely behind Zac, debating on whether or not to turn back into a human. She decided not to and watched as Zac pushed himself closer to the vampire. She noticed the tree behind Griffin and remembered something she had read in a book once. "Even the lightest brush of wood against a vampire will seriously wound them." Amber tilted her head to the side and she grew nervous as the werewolf slowly got closer to Griffin.

Ash returned Griffin's gaze and continued to look into his eyes even when he turned his head to glare at the large werewolf. She cautiously took a step backwards, not wanting to be in the middle of a fight if one broke out between the two.

Amber took a step toward Zac and brushed her side against his. "Zac. Leave him alone, we have more important things to do." She whispered in his ear and stepped back, hoping he would take her advice.

Griffin turned towards Ashlyn, a plead of help in his eyes, but he said nothing towards her. He turned his gaze away, feeling defeated as ever. Then his gaze was up at the werewolf's as he remembered that the tree behind him had thick branches capable of destroying his life line. Or... death line in a way.

Zac tilted his head, still amused by the position of this. He turned to see Amber, and muttered something gently in canine speak, so that Griffin and Ashlyn wouldn't be able to understand. "I just want to know one thing. I promise I won't start a fight." He gave Amber a sincere and loving smile before turning back to the vampire and 'hardening' again. "Tell me something, leech." He purposely insulted the vampire so he'd remember he couldn't do anything about it. "Why do you hate me so much?"

Griffin looked a bit shocked at the question. "I-" He stopped himself. "Why do you want to know that?" He asked, almost dumbfounded, but not really showing it. The only one who would have been able to tell how he really felt at this point could have been Ashlyn. He took a hard look at the werewolf's eyes and sighed with a tint of anger. "You really want to know?" He breathed.

Zac nodded his huge black head.

Griffin sighed again, this time completely full of both the hurt of the memories and the feel of defeat. "When I was human, I was the talk of the town, the one everyone wanted to be. I had it all. No one could ever mess with me because they knew I wouldn't care. I was the hot-shot. I had the pretty girl, I had the top spots in all of the sports. In a way, you could say I had everything and anything a teen could ever dream of. Then want to know what happened, wolf?" He paused, an actual tear escaping his seemingly distant eyes. Those eyes hadn't felt the brush of water for at least decades. "She was killed. Maybe not dead, then, but murdered flat out. He turned her into a vampire." His face was full of hatred and anger.

What does that have to do with werewolves? Zac wondered.

Griffin continued, "She turned me into a vampire as well. Out of pure confusion. My best friend had not only betrayed me, turned her, and defeated my trust. He brain-washed her too." He bit back his lip and another tear escaped. "Then when I finally got her to calm down and we were going to return to something close to normal, a werewolf came and killed them! My best friend I cared nothing of. He deserved to go to hell. But her? I witnessed her being clawed to death. The second kill." His face turned into one of pure rage, but he didn't move. "That same creature tried to kill me too. I barely got away. And ya know what? Until now I believed maybe I should have let him kill me. Maybe it would have been more worth all these years to spend them dead for good than alive without anything. Until now."

Although the vampire didn't mention why it was 'until now', it'd become fairly obvious soon. If it wasn't already. He wasn't exactly the best at letting his feelings escape into thin air. He tended to bottle them up until they exploded. "We done here?" He asked.

Zac nodded, in pure shock at the vampire's confessions. So this was why he was such an evil guy. He wondered to himself if it had been a good idea to make him say it. Whatever, it was done. He turned into his human form. "Wow... I..." he trailed off.

Griffin got rid of any emotion on the outside, putting it all on his inner self. He didn't like showing anyone his weaknesses. "Let's go. The more we stay here the greater a chance someone from that school will find us." He tried his best to push in front of all of them, but he just couldn't. He stopped halfway there.

Ashlyn stared at Griffin and Zac with disbelief in her eyes. She glanced up at Zac with hostility when he insulted the vampire, but she said nothing when Griffin began to speak. She listened intently as he confessed his past and she felt sympathy swell inside her as a few tears glistened against his cheek. As quickly as they had come, the tears disappeared and she flinched as his face hardened. Ash continued staring at Griffin in shock, until she noticed she was being rude and looked away.

Amber nodded and took a step towards Ash, not because she was afraid, but because she wanted to keep a close eye on both the Werewolf and Vampire. She could hear the deep, growling breath of Zac as he spoke and she twitched her ears uncomfortably. Amber looked down at her paws while Griffin spoke about his past and she couldn't help but notice a strange tone in his voice. Before she was able to detect this tone, it vanished as he returned to his regular hostile voice.

There's more to the story then he is sharing with us now. Ashlyn realized as Griffin shrugged off Zac and reminded them that they should continue on into the forest. Taking a step towards Griffin, she glanced at him with sympathy before turning to Amber with a questioning look.

Amber nodded and turned back into a human - "There is a large thicket deeper in the forest, I caught a glimpse of it while I was attempting to catch a fish. I'll show you the way." She glanced once more at Zac and started walking up the bank, deeper into the woods. Up ahead, she could make out a large thicket that would serve as good shelter. The clouds above them were growing dark and the thick layer of twigs above the thicket would be good protection since it was too late and too dangerous to go home. She bent down to duck inside and saw that the walls were lined with thick moss. "Perfect." She smiled with satisfaction.

Zac merely followed Amber after that. For the most part, he was silent on their way to the shrubs, but he longed to talk to Amber. He couldn't handle all the intensity. All the evil. All the hatred. He wanted to take his mind off of it. And to get to know Amber a bit better. As they got to the entrance of the thicket, Zac couldn't help but sneak another glance at her. By now he had almost completely forgotten about Griffin. "Thanks, Amber. You've got a sharp eye." He gave a smirking expression and shot it her way to lighten up the mood.

Griffin pretty much shut off the entire world. All except for Ashlyn. He kept by her side and stuck at the back of the group just to be with her. And her alone. For some reason, being away from the wolf and spending time around her made for a comforting and relaxing, and even somewhat exhilarating experience. He looked at her with a longing gaze in his eyes, but as soon as he recognized what he was doing as both rude and giving off feeling, he turned away. "I, uh..." He trailed off, for once very at loss for words. When he figured and planned out his sentences, he then turned back to her and spoke again. "You seem to be able to handle a lot..." he wasn't sure where he was going with this, but he decided to for once speak what he wanted. He shouldn't hold that much back around this girl. And for whatever reason, he found himself believing that. She was different. He could be different around her...

Amber paused a moment and glanced back at Zac, just in time to catch a glimpse of his smirk. She smiled at him and sat down, glad for the cover over them. "After the storm, we should return to our homes..." She muttered and glanced outside. The sky was already dark and the first raindrops were falling. Amber nudged her way over to the opening in the thicket and felt herself transform back into a human as she walked. Once at the opening, she stuck her hand out and felt the rain hit her arm softly. This was something she did every time it rained. She didn't know why, but it felt magical to her.

_________

Ashlyn felt the hair on her arms and the back of her neck as she felt him staring at her. She did not want to look back, in fear he would look away. Then, she felt his gaze turn away and she peeked at him in the corner of her eye. He seemed as though he was trying to say something but could not find the correct words. Then he spoke. "Well... I have had a few experiences in my past that have taught me I can handle pretty much anything. But sometimes...things can really get to me." She looked down at her feet and twisted her hands together.

_________

While Amber was standing at the opening of the thicket, she noticed something moving behind the trees. She stared intently at it before stepping back in alarm, almost tripping over a root from a tree.

Zac was a bit baffled at Amber's reaction. Did she want to depart from them? Most likely, from the sound and looks of it. And even as he watched her enjoy the rain and touch it softly, he scolded himself internally. Of course she wanted to go home. Who wouldn't? First day back at school, meeting strangers who happened to be not so human, and then figuring out she wasn't even human herself anymore? It would be traumatic for almost anyone. And it seemed as if Amber wasn't all too much of an exception.

Zac could tell she was strong, however. So even if she did feel that way, she was surely good at hiding it.

Griffin noticed the same thing in Ashlyn. But he actually said something about it. "Well, you're sure good at hiding it." He paused, thinking of what to say next. He knew how he felt. He knew what he should say. He just was never good at expressing his thoughts and feelings. He had lived so long on his own, that it never occurred to him he'd one day have to face his own mind and heart. That one day, he would have to reveal himself to someone.

He couldn't live forever in a shell. As much as he'd like to. Just then, though, his head snapped to the opening of the thicket. Amber had stepped back and nearly tripped, and the werewolf Zac had come to her aid almost immediately. Griffin, however, seeing as that situation was taken care of, effortlessly and without much thought on being brave or scared or anything, stepped out of the thicket and let the rain soak him. He didn't even seem to notice the water coming down. Or the fact that for a normal human, they'd be scared to death just to be here in his position, studying the movement outside. He just did as he would if he were alone. Right now, he wasn't just being courageous. He was honestly unafraid. "Mind showing yourself or are we going to have to play a game of hide and seek?" He said distastefully. Although he wasn't really angry or annoyed. He didn't actually feel a particular emotion at the moment to be completely truthful.

Amber felt hands grip around her shoulders to keep her from falling and when she looked up, she realized it was Zac. Smiling gratefully at him, she caught her balance and looked out into the rain. In the direction that they had originally come, towards the school, a black figure stood. Even though the figure was pretty much silhouetted, Amber could tell that the figure was wearing a hood-like cloak that made it look like a shadow in the rain. Gazing at the figure in horror, Amber watched as it took a step towards them before disappearing in a dust cloud. She froze, not moving her gaze from where the hooded creature stood.

_______________________________________

Ashlyn looked up at Griffin, her eyes meeting his. She could tell that he was wanting to say something, his his lips didn't twitch. Hearing the commotion behind her, Ashlyn turned her head to see Amber had tripped and Zac was helping her regain her balance. Turning back to Griffin, she realized that he had moved to the opening in the thicket and was gazing out into the rain. Stepping over to Amber, she realized that Amber had a look of pure horror on her face as she stared in the direction of the school. "Amber... what is it?" She asked.
