Harmon walked down the gravel road, kicking a single big rock whenever his foot came to it. He was only 10 years old, but he had matured quickly, due to bad experiences with his father. Since he had many siblings, he'd never really been alone, but whenever his dad was with him, he felt alone. When Harmon's foot came close to the rock again, he kicked it as hard as he could, and it got airbourne enough to hit someone in the head.
"Ow!" exclaimed Fletcher as a small, smooth stone landed on his head.
Harmon turned red as he heard Fletcher's voice. He scratched the back of his head and blushed as he yelled to his older brother, "Sorry, Fletch!"
Fletcher spun around, trying to figure out where the voice was coming from. "Oh, hey Harmon!" he responded. Fletcher's father wasn't a huge deal to him, mostly because he was older and their father was losing interest in him. Their father was paying more attention to the younger girls now, and that bothered Fletcher greatly, but he tried not to show it.

"Seth?" Maya called, squinting. "Seth!" she yelled, finally making sure it was him. She climbed down the tree cautiously, glad her father was now occupied with who-knew-what else. It had been forever since she had last seen her brother, and now that he was here, she felt light and giddy with joy. It was tainted by fear that their father would see, but she pushed that out of her mind. "Where have you been?" Maya asked, quickly becoming worried. "I've missed you..." She hugged him quickly.
"You better hide, or climb up a tree," Maya said, throwing a glance at the house, fear obvious. "Dad's home." She shuddered subtly.

Seth quickly walked over to Maya, embracing her when she did him. As soon as she advised him to climb up the tree, he did exactly that. "Dad's home?" he asked, a bit nervous, and quickly climbed up the tree. Soon he began to talk to Maya. "Well, I haven't been doin' good stuff..." he began. "I've done a few bad things...." he said, shame in his voice, but also a bit of roughness from turning hard on the streets,

Bridget climbed the tree and sat on a well hidden branch. "You did bad stuff?" She asked her brother. "They're probably not as bad as what our father does to us." She sighed, and leaned against the tree. Bridget looked at her arm, which had many, many bruises covering it.

Seth nodded. "That's why I left in the first place. I'm sorry I left you guys... but I had to get away from him..." he paused. "Yeah... I've done pretty bad stuff. I've robbed places, almost killed people, you name it, I've probably done it. The gang made me.. and now if the police find me I'm done for."

Maya squeezed her brother's hand. "They won't find you. And if they do, well, I'll just telll them what Dad has done. Maybe that'll distract them from getting you, so you can run." Her clear voice was determined, and her eyes showed it too. HEr passion faded, and she sighed, rubbing her arm, which like Bridget's, was brised.

Seth managed a smile at his sister's comment. "Thanks." When he noticed her looking at her bruises he cupped his hand lightly over them. "I'll always have your back too," he said. "If Dad comes back and finds where we are, I'll distract him so you guys can run."

Bridget snort-laughed. "He's usually so drunk when he's abusing us he wouldn't notice if all of us were gone." She knew she was trying to make herself feel better, but it failed. It's true, though. She told herself.

Fletcher smiled and playfully punched Harmon in the shoulder. "C'mon, let's go find the sibs!"
Harmon slapped Fletcher in the stomach. "Then you're it!" he shouted before running off to find his brothers and sisters.

Maya smiled at Seth, then turned it onto Bridget, managing a small laugh. "You're right about that," she said, then turned her attention back to her brother. "And thanks," she added, her voice slightly softer.
