Sable nearly jumped out of her skin and both of her parents scrambled up. Maya darted through the doggie door while Triton puffed himself up and stood tall. Sable just stood still, not nearly as frightened as she was curious. No other sounds followed the huge crash so Triton relaxed, but curiosity was still getting the better of the red husky.
"It was probably a stray or a racoon or something papa" Sable finally said, breaking the tension.
Triton didn't reply but it was clear that he still didn't trust the source of the sound. Before her father could stop her, Sable gracefully leapt down the steps, blue eyes searching. When nothing jumped out, she called a soft, "Hello?"

Brett was just getting himself up, still hidden in the shadows. He shook his head a few times, and then looked at the barrel that was smashed in the ground next to him.
"Whoa, that was a nasty fall" he thought to himself, and looked up to the roof. But then, he suddenly heard Sable's voice calling:
"Hello?"
Brett perked his ears up, and when he turned, he saw her walking towards the alley he was hiding in. Brett gasped quietly in panic, and turned away from Sable and hid himself better behind the smashed barrel.
"Um.. What do you want?" he called to her, not turning his head towards her, and felt slight blushing in his cheeks.

Sable tilted her head, and couldn't sop a small smile from showing.
"I should ask you the same thing" she replied, eyes searching for the stray she knew was there. "You came here after all... I think"
Sable stepped lightly into the big alley, trying to figure out where the stray was but not catching site of him.
"So what's your name?" She called out, thinking she could locate the dog by sound.

Brett didn't say anything at first, and he was trying to get the blushing off of his cheeks. He shook his head in the dark a few times, then sighed quietly when Sable said he came there after all.
"Yeah, well... this is the only time of the day when I can find food for myself without being chased, or called a mutt" Brett replied, with a little bit sad tone in his voice. But then his ears twicthed when Sable asked for his name. No other dog had ever asked what his name was, because they were always just calling him names.
"... Brett" he then replied quitely, and blushed again, but since he was hiding, Sable couldn't see it. Fortunately.

Sable tried to locate the stray, sniffing the ground, but she had never really learned his scent.
"Well Brett... " she started, pausing for a second. "I don't see what's so bad about being a mutt. After all, I'm a mutt and my grandpa was too"
She stepped out further into the alley, looking over her shoulder to make sure her father wasn't following.
"Maybe we can get you a family or something... I could help you"

Brett sighed quietly at Sable's words, of course she meant well but she had no idea what he had been through.
"At least you have a family that loves you.. My parents only rejected me when I was young, and no human wanted to adopt me either" he said, with a sad tone in his voice and pinned his ears down. Then, he sat down on the ground with his back turned to Sable, but making sure she still couldn't see him.
"I'm sorry, but I don't think you could help me" Brett then sighed sadly, then he rose up to his feet, and was about to leave.

Sable frowned at what Brett had said but as he spoke, she continued to poke around through the trash, peering into trashcans and over boxes as she went along.
As the last things he said came out of his mouth, Sable could sense he was about to leave.
"Maybe you just need a few friends and some confidence... " She froze, straining for an answer but when she didn't hear anything immediately, she continued, "My dad was the same way... my mom helped him and now he's the town's search and rescue dog!"

Brett stopped, as he listened to Sable's words, and his ears twitched. She really seemed to want to help him, even though she didn't even know him properly. He lowered his head a little bit, and thought about what she said for a while.
"Well... I'd sure like to know how to get any friends... everytime I approach someone, they'll just walk away" Brett then said, and sighed quietly. Then he turned back towards Sable, but still kept himself hidden in the shadows. Just in case.
"But, do you really think I could.. you know, become something like that?" he then asked Sable, with a little surprised tone in his voice, and then he felt how his self confidence slowly started to grow. For the first time in his life someone was being so nice to him.

"Of course" Sable replied in a friendly, confident tone. "You just need... a push"
The young canine continued to search the pile of rubble, trying to pick out where Brett could be hiding... how could he just melt into the dark like that?!
"Well to your credit, you're pretty good at hiding!"

Sable's words made a small smile appear on Brett's face, and his ears twitched a little. He slowly turned his head towards her, but still kept himself hidden in the shadows
"Well, if you think so..." he began, swalowed quietly, then continued:
"Then maybe... Maybe I don't have to hide anymore"
And then, he finally slowly stepped away from the shadow, step by step, and the last thing he showed was his face.

Sable smiled softly.
"You don't look bad!" Sable said happily. "I'm sure there was some other reason anyone else would make fun of you. Who knows, they might have just been jealous!"
Sable tried to coax the stray out of the alley and after thinking to herself added, "Do you have a family? Or owners?"

Brett perked his ears up and looked surprised, she was the first one ever who did NOT call him a freak and run away after seeing his face, and this made him really happy and confused at the same time.
"Wow... you're the first one who doesn't make fun of my appearance. See, others have always called me freak" he then said, and sighed quietly.
"No... I don't have an owner. Or a family. I pretty much take care of mysefl" Brett then added, and shrugged.
