I agree some newbies need respect and some deserve it. But on the whole, over the past few months, a lot of newbies have came on the site and have completley ignored the rules. They use to many smilies and ect ect.

But the thing is all they want is attention. There are two ways to react to these situations:

The Right Way.
Newbie:Oooh hey. I love Balto he is awsome!!!111!! :alien: :@:    :monkey: :afro:  :albino: :flower:
Older member:Presses report button.

No arguments caused.

The Wrong Way.
Newbie:Oooh hey. I love Balto he is awsome!!!111!! :alien: :@:    :monkey: :afro:  :albino: :flower:
Older Member:omg. You newbies are so immature. Go and grow up and stop using so many smilies.
Newbie:You are so mean! I was only saying how much I loved balto!
Older Member:So, whats the use for so many smilies?
Newbie: ... *cries* :shaking: cryeyesout.gif
Mod:Sigh. Do I really need to lock this topic...
*Topic Locked dew to agrument*

Just a waste of your time, the newbie's time and the Mod's time.

I agree completely with this, except one thing, explain to the person why they were reported.
Because I don't know about them, but I'd like to know why I was reported. Not only does it stop any further argument, but they learn from their mistake. If you don't explain, the newbie might not make a fuss, but since they don't know why they're reported, they're open to make that mistake again.

Like you explain: "Reported because it's against the rules to use so many smilies." Maybe also add that they should read the site's rules.

Newbie that was reported (if they're understanding): "Ok, thanks for telling me, I'll not break that rule again."

or they could be like "I HATE YOU! YOU ALL ARE SO MEAN!!! :x :x :x :x       "
"You all hate me!     "

Yeah...I've seen those two more than I've seen them apologize for their mistakes, let alone say they wouldnt do it again.

I felt awful when I first started the site. This topic talks a lot of sence. I won't mention names, but now I have friends on here and I don't feel as picked on, I'm having fun.
I'd like to thank the ones who were my friends whilst I felt like I wanted to delete my account. :)

I'm happy for you Tink fan ^^
If only others were as fortunate as you, for I saw 2 more who where not treated so kindly just today! :(

To all who are not so new to the site (like "Living Here" rank and higher) : Some one explain how you could forget being new to a site only hoping to meet new friends and/or have fun?! Surely you made a mistake or two in your time?! I read the rules before posting, and disobeyed one or two, but luckily nicer people than I've seen around here corrected me, and I like to think I'm doing well now!! Why do you want to support a site when you scare others away?! I've seen shy new people who just want to share their love of Balto with others, and only be criticized so harshly in return for some simple and rediculous mistake!!! D:

Forgive me if I sound harsh, but just browsing through my topic mail, I saw two noobies being treaded un-fair, and considered leaving again. I love Balto Source. I love having the friends I've made here (they were the first internet friends I've EVER made), and I wish to make more. But I'm put to the test when others are being rude.

I ask of you the senior BS citizens (if you will), take it upon yourselves to help a new member! You'll feel better about yourself for it, and so will they.
That's all I have to say this round. I hope some one listens, and that it gives the noobies a better chance at enjoying this wonderful site.

JC: Though I should be specific on which newbies need to be treated more fair. Such as when they post a simple joke and get harrassed because someone else heard it before. And then again, it's not only newbies that this happens too. I just think they should be given a chance before being accused of wanting attention or not reading the rules, etc.

There are a bunch of rules to remember, and some that others 'add' and it's just not right.
In example, when people misspell a word: the rules never say anything about always spelling things right. They just say no texting short cuts like 'brb' or 'tyvm'.
They're bound to make mistakes. And should be treated with respect when that happens. Even if they are reported, like was posted earlier, tell them why. If they know what they did wrong and understand it, then they're most likely NOT to do it again.

Oh, yeah, and I never claimed all were treated unfair, and that all the older members are rude. I've seen several older members treat others (such as newbies since that's the topic's point) fairly. So I'm not saying all of them aren't nice. And many newbies (like you and I) were given warm welcomes and have always enjoyed the site.

*sigh* I’m getting tired of our little “debate”, but I’ll do my best to explain:

Quote:
That is apparently a dig at me. Whenever I have corrected kids or teens (who should be capable, if they are native English speakers, of knowing better by high school age...and college-aged people have no excuse for atrocious spelling and grammar), I don't recall ever doing so with sarcasm or flames. Since there is no rule against making altruistic corrections to bad grammar and spelling, and since I have always approached it as performing a service (for the sanity of all members), I don't see the problem here.

I’m not sure what you mean in that first line, but if you’re saying that’s a ‘shot at you’, then it intentionally wasn’t.
Other than that, this is a site for kids! Some maybe still leaning how to spell and use big words. And others might have problems writing and/or reading. Such as being dyslexic.
It’s good to help others with their spelling and what not, but I don’t see why it has to be such a big issue here. If some one doesn’t like to be corrected, then leave them be and carry on with your day.
And as far as sarcasm and what not…when reading, it’s hard to tell when some one is being sarcastic or what-not. That’s when smilies come in handy I recon.
I’m done debating on this point.

Quote:
But for the fact that there has already been a rant (though I have no time to search it out in order to post the link) on this board about those who report members and then SAY why (along with the word "reported") in a response in the topic itself. And the mods have said that posting after a report, in order to explain to the member why (and especially when using the words "reported" or "you have been reported"), is in bad taste, and should not be done. If they haven't got the presence of mind to sort it out for themselves, or to take the few minutes (at MOST) which it takes to read and digest the rather easy site rules, they have no recourse for whining about being called on any violation thereof. Where on this expansive site does it say that new members should be coddled and given special dispensation when they break the rules or behave in a manner which generally or (especially) repeatedly causes others irritation?

…I got lost where you where going on this…

Quote:
Then perhaps you could clarify this:

Quote:
To all who are not so new to the site (like "Living Here" rank and higher) : Some one explain how you could forget being new to a site only hoping to meet new friends and/or have fun?! Surely you made a mistake or two in your time?!

If I can: I notice you tend to take things to personally or literally. When I was saying “you“, it was more of figuratively ‘speaking’. Like I was saying “If you‘re one of these people,”. Does that make sense?

Quote:
Some newbies ARE treated unfair, it is true (I was treated like hammered crap when I first arrived, because I went to the defense of someone who was wrongly accused of art theft...yes, a MySpacer

Quote:
I initially posted with respect and civility, trying to offer what I hoped would be a dialogue which could sort it out peaceably. And the hostile parties here would have NONE of it. Two members, moderators both, came into that morass and attempted to deflect some of that initial and horrid hostility and flaming. No one else did initially (and never in that topic). And those clique members absolutely ignored the moderators' requests for patience and understanding, and kept up their assault (the details are unnecessary...I have long since happily worked out my differences with at least two of them...one of whom is still occasionally active here). It took TIME for people to generally treat me nicer, because the influence of the members of that clique held sway over the members of the site...especially the mewling, sopping fankids of those people (whom, as I said, were and are fan artists). The two mods I mentioned (one of whom still is a mod) went out of their own way, and took great risks, to treat me like a human being. They were, in those early days, the EXCEPTION rather than the rule. So much for all the high and mighty talk of what Balto Source was like in the old days. Some things never change (even if the particular players and cliques do).

But I am glad to say that, for the most part, the only troubles I have on the site anymore, even as a long-established member, are with the occasional trolls, immature and touchy kids and teens (who usually greatly misinterpret my altruistic efforts, such as grammar and spelling corrections, as flaming), and flagrant rules-breakers (as I have said elsewhere, there was a time when I left...when things got real bad. And I have since come back. But I have been a member since 2006).

This was also hard to keep up with… if you could give a shorter explanation, I might understand…
What I was thinking while reading some of this was: I’ve only been here a year. When I first came, it was great. No arguments, and I wasn’t disrespected for my spelling or opinions. But lately I’ve seen it. I’m not saying this has happened to me (at least real bad), but the way some members behave is the reason why I made this topic to begin with. I’m not accusing you just to be clear.

XD Jersey, and I thought I was a grammar Nazi! All kidding aside though, I do agree with your point. Native speakers of the English language, and most especially those who have reached the end of middle school to high school age, who should know by now what is expected to successfully and effectively communicate. Not correcting them (in a kind, simple and helpful manner) when they continue to misspell words or butcher their own grammar (which was designed specifically to make written language easy to understand and help designate a "tone" when no voice can be heard or given through the media they have chosen to communicate) only serves to either make the situation worse, or in effect "praise" the use of bad grammar and spelling, so that the user will take longer to learn to communicate effectively.

It's a little ironic (to me, at least) that you did mention how some people have to load up their posts with smilies in order to express their intent, even if they may not like to do this. I have fallen prey to this, simply for the sake of being understood, when in reality, there shouldn't be a problem with comprehension when a smiley is not provided. Good grammar does this job, and as long as you're used to being able to set the tone of your message using it you shouldn't need to bog down a reply with little winky faces, or barfing faces. They're just unnecessary.

The last thing I really have to add to this is concerning the report, then notify the reportee portion of your conversation: Jersey's right. It's better just to not say that you've reported someone and just leave the issue alone until it's dealt with. When you purposely go out of your way to tell someone you've reported them, it can tend to lead to vicious, attacking posts back at you, or even to whining reply. There has even been the occasional case of flame-pming harassment because of it, though these cases do not make up the majority. Though this may not apply to all, in general this is what I've seen whenever users are alerted to being reported, even if they're told in a nice way by the reporter. I also don't remember which topic we explicitly covered this in, but in most of the more recent topics, you should be able to see that if a problem was reported by a member about a member (even if no names were given) we've told them to ignore him/her and then report him/her if there was rule-breaking or general rudeness which was unnecessary.
