How to disable autorun in Windows Vista

When that is done, your laptop should stop overheating.

Thanks. What are the potential problems this may cause though?

Well, its not my computer, but its my mom's old computer. Even though she got a new one, she would like to restore the old one.Its a 2005 Emachine running XP.

She doesn't know what happened to it. From what I told her, she had Malware.
What happens is, It boots up slow. (The memory is fine, I checked that and it was only 20% full.) Another problem was, pop up adds. She couldn't get rid of them. Along with that, the internet always messed up for her. (She used/uses IE7.) The page won't load correctly. It looked like a white page with links in random spots. Then it would freeze and not respond.

Would a recovery disk fix the problems, or would replacing the Hard drive be a better idea?

The only problem is that nothing will start to run unless you physically activate it. The only things that will start to work automatically are the necessary processes that keeps Vista kickin'.

You need to physically click every file in order to start them.

I'm not liking that idea, I have quite a few things on the computer that I need working but don't know where it is located. So I just did something to give my computer more circulation under it to help with the overheating. Thanks for the advice though!

Hi! It could be a registry problem that causes her machine to freeze up and boot slowly.

When you boot the computer, go to system restore. Here is a walkthrough:

1. Log on to Windows as Administrator.
2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. System Restore starts.
3. On the Welcome to System Restore page, click Restore my computer to an earlier time (if it is not already selected), and then click Next.
4. On the Select a Restore Point page, click the most recent system restore point in the On this list, click a restore point list, and then click Next.

Note A System Restore message may appear that lists configuration changes that System Restore will make. Click OK.
5. On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next. System Restore restores the previous Windows XP configuration, and then restarts the computer.
6. Log on to the computer as Administrator. The System Restore Restoration Complete page is displayed.
7. Click OK.

When that is done, do this:

Don't use Internet Explorer. Use the new computer to download the software I am linking to below and move the setup files to a transportable disk (a USB harddrive preferrably) and install the software from there. Don't open Internet Explorer on the old PC.

To get rid of the popup ads, install Advanced SystemCare Free and run it using the "Care!" button in its interface. This will fix problems on the computer.

When that is completed, download and install AdAware and use it to clean the computer of spyware, trojans, rootkits, hijackers, keyloggers and similar.

Once you are finished with that, update your anti-virus and do a complete system scan.

[edit]: Bloody heck, I'm too slow!

[edit2]: I don't recommend CCleaner. It is too crude and it does not do a very good job.

[edit3]: Sorry about stealing the spotlight from LostMyMind ^^'

I can help you with that one. Overheating is very common in laptops and is usually the result of having too many processes running at one time. The more your computer/laptop works, the warmer it gets, which means the fan must work more. It can only do so and so.

I don't agree with this one. While it's true that loading lots of processes keeps the CPU busy for a couple of minutes, for the rest of the time the processor is idle. To check that one, I suggest using a tool like "CPUID Hardware Monitor", which shows the current temperature of the processor; use it together with the good old task manager (ctrl+alt+del) to see how busy the processor is. Technically, a CPU should resist a 12 hours long stress test without any fail. Even if we assume that Godzillawolf has processes that use the CPU (like folding@home), an overheating problem should always be solved by removing the problem itself, or she won't be able to stress the CPU any more. And it always happens to unzip a big file, sometimes. That's why first of all I suggest to check if the CPU is idle or full, as stated above: mainly this will help to understand how big the problem is. Then, since it's a laptop, it's going to be a little more complicated to fix it. The fact is, 99% this problem is caused by dust. Try to clean it as much as you can, you should also remove some parts in order to clean it better. If you do a careful job, this will be enough. Also, since summer is coming, it could be a good idea to lift it a little from the table.

This is blasphemy, this is madness! xD CCleaner is one of the best programs ever made. It's fast, light, accurate and does a lot of different things. Also, it is updated very often. I always recommend to run a CCleaner scan every month on every computer.

That's also another solution. And seriously, CCleaner sucks =P I could do a better job manually (as blasphemous as I am now xD). Iobit's alternative is so much better, because not only does it clean up all malware and spyware, fix your registry, freeing memory and speed-defrag your drives (much faster than Windows' standard program), it also creates 100% HijackThis-compatible logfiles to rule out unnecessary processes which may sneak in and run themselves together with the computer's normal processes.

It may not be updated as frequently as CCleaner, but it's much more powerful.

[edit]: Of course, Advanced SystemCare has to be bought in order to utilize its system optimization features (which increased my computer's capacity and power by 273% - that's right; it more than tripled my computer's power available processing power, which I found - due to Microsoft's more useless "scrapjunk" that comes with Windows - to be at 71.23% of what my computer was capable of).

[edit2]: Then again, this was right after a computer upgrade and one day prior to my kicking Windows in the rear and embracing Linux Kubuntu.

Dust was the problem with my old computer as well. I don't trust myself in that area though...Anyway, I did get it off the desk by proping up the corners with small books, carefully avoiding the fan areas. I don't trust a lot of online stuff though, normally I'll do whatever I can myself (minus the anti-virus I got, which works well, and some video games...).
