Kaltag will have been named after the town in Alaska, that is on the route of the Iditarod Trail. Kaltag is a popular sled dog name as well. But it is only the name, I doubt he was after a real dog.

Kaltag is a checkpoint, on the iditarod trail. When balto was in production, That's most likely how, Kaltag got his name.

He's a work of fiction designed specifically for the cartoon. Further, real Chinooks have drop ears...Kaltag has erect pointed ears. Chinooks are large dogs...the breed is quite large. Kaltag is smaller than Steele...and Steele (whom the trivia page on IMDB establishes is a Siberian husky, as the movie people themselves said), when he stands next to his musher, is not all that big. The only Chinook-like aspect of Kaltag is his coloration. And that does not make him a Chinook, no matter what the trivia page of the IMDB entry for the Balto movie says about him. thanks for clearin that up, im sorry but i was just going from what i've seen on IMDB I know kaltag is not a real dog lol but anyways, i will try to get some pics of my dog up to show you, she has really pretty coloration

I think that the person may have just named their dog that in coinsidence. Many people could name their dogs names after Balto characters.
