Ghost-Unit wrote: Whatever economy is being hurt by the less vacations is probably being made up for in the preventive measures being taken by countries. Just because one economical outlet is lost does not mean that it is ultimately bad for the economy, because it may open other doors. Take World War II for example. The United States ceased trade with Japan, which hypothetically would have damaged the country. But with war came the need for weapons, and when factories re-tooled to help supply the war effort, the economy was booming and this pulled the United States out of the Great Depression. Same concept with the swine flu. Some economical doors may have been (temporarily) shut, but the need for vaccines and other preparatory measures stand to fill that gap. Mexico is one place, but preparatory measures are being taken across the globe. I would be very surprised if the economy did not cut even or increase because of this. Your looking at it as it's just the United States in the recession, your worse then David Cameron, xD. It's not just the US in the recession, yes, they started it (Thanks to the banks), but this is Global. Commonwealth, Europe, North/South America, literally everywhere. And Mexico going into lockdown wont help them, I can see a few minor holiday makers going bust. Shops, office working exc. - All closing. And a very slim chance of them returning unless Mexico think of a backup plan. And the problem is, extra vacancies cant be given out, because it could cause even more people to have the flu, masks or not. If we start producing one thing (this is from the UK's situation), we'll have to stop another, resulting in death's from other Flu's around the country. It's a never ending circle, the flu has come at totally the wrong time, you cannot even say "It would of been better next year", No - Because it would mean the credit crunch would hit us harder, and faster. If the Economy benefits from this, I think I may die of a Heart attack, or shock in that matter.

I am looking at this on global terms....the scare is global, so the the preparations are global. People are needed for those preparations, thus creating jobs.

Job's that would probably be axed if the recession continue's after the outbreak has been put in it's place, and in some senses, Job's that wont exist in the first place. You choose: 1) Let the odd few die of swine flu. 2) let thousands of the elderly to die of other flu's and bugs. If they start one project, they have to destroy another. I stick by my word, this is NOT helping the economy, or, to be light about it: Good for the few. Bad for the many.

Look at it this way, in more detail..
People are getting sick, doctors are needed to treat them, some doctors might get more jobs as a result. The doctors proscribe medicine for the sick, someone has to make that medicine in bulk, the chemistist capable of doing that get jobs. The factory workers making the cardboard, paper, plastic, ect. to hold those drugs are needed, more jobs there. People also take preventive massures, surgical masks, gloves, ect., someone must make those, more jobs. Then there's the fact public transportation will be decreased somewhat by this but that's not enough to justify job cuts, thus people will be using there cars more for travel, some people might need to buy a new car, thus helping that indestry. Then next Flu Season, a vaccine will need to be made for this flu. And there is a simple fact that very few people, about 1 or 2, outside of Mexico have died of this illness, thus your point of that is unvialde. Hope that made my point more clear.
Thanks for agreeing Ghost Unit.

Thanks for agreeing Ghost Unit. Thus, polluting the world more. These "jobs" may be at the limit, we already have them, all there going to do (and all they can do), is cut back on other drugs, hence, making situation worse. And what happens to these jobs... After?

After the situation gets worked out, the need for those jobs lowers, and those participants go find new work....or perhaps stay in their field? Either way the economy will revert itself to what it had been before the panic, because vacations will then resume in Mexico. And whatever else was halted... Small yet unrelated note; you brought up pollution. That's another problem that also creates jobs, specifically in the green movement. It will be awesome to see in the near future how doing the right thing for the environment will also be a good economic turn. Godzillawolf wrote: Thanks for agreeing Ghost Unit.

Your not very educated in the world of economics, mind you, not many Americans are. Doctors create jobs? It takes YEARS to become Doctors/Nurses, Chemist's need to be licensed, so do the drivers, you need training, for any of these jobs to be created, there has to be atleast 3 years training per job. Well, apart from pushing the odd button, but then that just created an overload.

Each country has its own strengths and weaknesses. If I remember correctly, Britain has free education across the board, including free college. Since college in the United States costs money, that limits to some extent the amount of education some can get. On the other hand, the United States has its upsides, too. Such as being a world influence. I really hope that wasn't an attempt at culture bash on your part. I'm having trouble shaking that suspicion though.
Perhaps some of the required jobs for this situation take years to prepare for, but there are other jobs and tasks that will be needed for this problem. Namely transportation. It's not too noteworthy for an isolated area, but funding transportation globally will surely generate money. The media is also scaring people, and a people who are worried will consume more. I've heard that from several sources.

It wont help the economy, but I don't think it will practically destroy it (My previous comment was more of a "harsh" comment)

This isn't the first time people have gotten scared about swine flu. There was a small outbreak in 1976, causing a mass panic about a pandemic. The pandemic never happened, so they got scared for nothing.
This is just me thinking, but what if, with all our quarantine protocols and procedures, we actually have mitigated pandemics. For all we know, SARS, avian flu, or this swine flu were supposed to be major pandemics, but they were stopped by our fast-acting quarantines. The swine flu may become far-reaching, but since we can quickly identify it, it wouldn't get a chance to spread and become as deadly as the 1918 flu pandemic. Could that be a possibility?

That depends. All I know is that people has to be aware, not panicked though. I'm just only concerned about it.

The one thing that truly grinds my gears over this whole swine flu ordeal, are people buying the N95 particulate respirators...Those are designed to capture 95% of harmful particles as the result of painting...not biological threats, it's almost like sucking water through a cheese cloth. The best thing to prevent yourself from getting this, is what everyone else has said, eat good, get lots of sleep, and take in your recommended daily intake of Vitamin D...not go out and buy painting masks, which will only make you feel safe from the flu's particles, since their performance in stopping biological particles is poor....
