Which is why I used the Abbott & Costello quote (from their famous baseball routine)...because that whole thing between you, Roxi and Aloha Aleu is having about the same effect on my sanity... To be honest Jersey, I've been confused since the first reply to my 97A post.... Lol.

Oh I was wondering if this has been solved : Has the Titanic ever been brought up to the surface? I was told that it has, but I am not so sure.

No, it hasn't They had intentions of doing so, but because the structure has become so weak, and contracted from the cold and pressure, it would break apart on the way up.

I heard this theory a couple years ago and I'm wondering if anyone else knows about it, and whether or not it's true.
Before the ship left on it's maiden voyage, a fire broke out in one of the coal bunkers adjacent to the bulkhead between boiler rooms 5 and 6 (the two front-most ones). At the time coal fires in the bunkers were not unheard of, so they left the fire burning and continued on the voyage as planned, shoveling the red hot coal from the burning bunker into the boiler. But, the heat from the fire had warped and weakened the bulkhead between the two boiler rooms. When the Titanic struck the iceberg, the water flooded into the cargo holds and boiler room 6. When the icy water hit the heated and warped bulkhead, the shock of going from extreme heat to extreme cold fractured the bulkhead, making boiler room 5 flood almost instantly. Instead of having to wait for the water from the compartment before to spill over the bulkhead, the water instantly flooded 6 sections instead of 5, possibly speeding up the sinking.
I remember hearing this idea on a Titanic special The Discovery Channel did a few years ago. I think it was called "Last Mysteries of the Titanic". Has anyone else heard this theory, or know anything about it?

No, it hasn't They had intentions of doing so, but because the structure has become so weak, and contracted from the cold and pressure, it would break apart on the way up. That's part of the issue. There are also the following: 1. The question of salvage rights (and international issues pertaining to ownership of the wreck based upon the past). 2. The question of whether or not the ship itself is a gravesite. 3. The unbelievable cost involved in a hypothetical operation to bring any part (or all) of it to the surface...let alone the depth of the water involved. 4. The damage already done to the wreck site by careless, bumbling visitors...like James Cameron and his team (primarily resulting from carelessness in shooting footage used in the movie Titanic) and other salvage groups (and looters). 5. The fact that it is presently a maritime monument under international protection as it is on the bottom of the Atlantic. Personally, I think it would be a travesty to bring it back to the surface. Parts of the ship and plenty of flotsam which fell off of it have already been brought up, preserved and put on display. Other parts have remained in museums and even semi-private or private collections for years. The ocean has claimed the ship, and it is indeed a gravesite, deserving of peace and solace. Yeah, I didn't even think of the other complications on that list, but it's my opinion too, that she should be left to sleep in it's resting place, and that raising the wreckage would defile graves of those who lost their lives.

Not to mention the fact of the public would probably never allow it, and there would be huge outburst of anger from the British/American public.
