Both Togo and Balto (as well as the other dogs that took part in the Serum Run) deserve the equal amount of credit for their efforts. Sure, we mainly hear the tales of how Togo had the endurance to lead for the longest stretch of the return trail and how Balto completed the journey in the end, but we should never forget that these two brave dogs couldn't pull this off alone.

And of course, bravo to you, JC, for helping to shed a light on the deeds of these heroes - for they all deserve recognition for their endurance, fidelity and intelligence.

Hey, JC . . . I think you've just inspired me to write a fic . . .

No, seriously - I will write a fic in honor of those unnamed heroes that seem to be left forgotten in the shadow of both Balto and Togo . . . Hopefully I can finish it by the anniversary of the Serum Run next year!

It's not much, but it's the least that one of us could do to remember them . . . the ones that lived and the ones that unfortunately sacrificed themselves to save others.

But to get back on topic: The Togo/Balto fighting really needs to stop between us. Sure, Balto got a major movie (and a couple of sequels) and Togo gets books and stuff as the forgotten hero . . . but the statue at Central Park, although it clearly shows Balto, honors and remembers ALL of the sled dogs, not just two . . . or one.

From the inscription wrote:
“Dedicated to the indomitable spirit of THE SLED DOGS – that relayed antitoxin six hundred miles over rough ice, across treacherous waters, through Arctic blizzards from Nenana to the relief of stricken Nome in the winter of 1925 – ENDURANCE – FIDELITY – INTELLIGENCE”

See? Without every dog to play their role on their teams - whether they were lead dogs like Balto and Togo, or just normal sled dogs that will remain nameless - no one would have been able to survive the diphtheria sickness that season.
