Whilst Balto 2 did try to go for something deeper, for me it felt like the producers gave up and stopped caring halfway through production. Whilst its heart is in the right place and it does show some interesting ideas (who you are is different to what you are), it just ended up being an empty and boring film. They spent too much time with Aleu fussing around with the whole 'Who am I,' thing. They should have spent more time with the wolf pack, so we can really get to know the wolves' personalities and how dire their situation really is.
Sure, it features one of my favourite animals. the wolf. Sure, it helped keep Balto in the spotlight, for a while at least. Sure, it has some cool spiritual ideas. But when I try to judge it by its entertainment factor, I'm afraid there it fails. I find Disney's 'Bambi,' (which has an undeserved reputation as being 'boring' or 'childish'), a lot more exciting and mature than Wolf Quest. Compared to most other direct-to-video follow-ups, Wolf Quest is brilliant, but when compared to the beauty and scope of the original Balto, it just doesn't seem right.
