Lol, sorry. Basically, there is VERY little difference between the DNA of dogs and the DNA of wolves, so much that it is nearly impossible to know for sure if a dog is part wolf solely on appearance. Most wolves are a varied shade of grey (including all varieties of brown mixed in in different proportions), while black is occasional. White is rare, but more common in the Arctic.

Going over my biology notes, this makes it seem like white fur is a recessive trait, while the many different variations of grey and black (including brown, tan, reddish brown, etc.) are probably all dominant over white, but have a hierarchy among themselves (multiple-allele dominance) and blend with each other (incomplete dominance).

If this applies to wolves, because of the similarity of wolf and dog DNA it most likely applies to dogs. So, according to my research and conclusions, Balto's father would have had to have a fur color that was dominant over white. This is a really simplified explanation, though, and still doesn't really offer a complete explanation of how fur color is inherited. If it did, there would be pages explaining it this way, but there aren't. It's even more complicated than that, and scientists have yet to discover the complete rules that govern human or canine genetics.

That's what i was thinking. Im such a nerd, after a posted in this topic i was curious so i drew a punnet square. What I got from it was something i already expected. The only way for Balto's fur to have been brown would be either heterozygous or homozygous dominant. Brown being the dominant trait. As far as i know, you need more than two colors to make brown so i don't think incomplete dominance occured. I still think Codominance came up, he's got brown fur and gray fur.

Lol, it's okay. I'm equally nerdy, maybe more, for pulling up all that info. We can be nerdy together.

Well, since this topic was originally supposed to be about our versions of Balto's father, I guess I'll post mine, even though we still aren't quite sure what possiblities are genetically possible. I drew this picture exactly 2 years ago today, but it's the only colored picture I have of my version of Balto's father.

Logan was an inexperienced lead dog on a mail team from White Mountain before he was separated from his team during a terrible blizzard on a mail run through the Valley Pack's territory. His musher assumed him dead, and moved on withour him. He had to learn to survive on his own, and in desparation he asked admittance into the Valley Pack. The Alpha resfused to allow Logan into the pack, but he did catch the attention and pity of a beautiful female, Aniu. She began to secretly bring him food and teach him to hunt, and they eventually fell in love. When Aniu announced that she was pregnant, the couple ran away together to raise their family. Aniu gave birth to six pups: Jade, Flint, Sage, Luna, Balto, and Ikuma. One day, they realized the pack had found their trail, and Aniu told Logan to leave and take Luna, who looked more like a husky than a wolf, with him. Immediately after he left, a hunter came and shot Aniu, scattered the pups, and carried away Balto's brother Ikuma. The hunter's dog took Balto to Nome, and left him in the care of Boris. All Balto knows about his family is that his dad was a husky and left with his sister when he was very young, and that the hunter that killed his mother took away his brother.

I had to redraw my version of Balto's daddy, but I didn't change his markings . His name is Tyke. I haven't decided yet what personality he has, but I'm sure he's got big sense of humor. I also redesigned Aniu because I think she lost her markings as she's not alive, but she's a ghost, so below there's an image of my version of Aniu.

Aniu looked at Balto and Said"I will tell you the story but you need to find him to hear all of it, It was way back than when I was so young and I didn't even know him. I saw a Husky lost in the storm and I... You need to read the story for more. The story has alot of info about the story of Aniu and Random. "Random" is his name not a random Name.
