I seen the previews for it but it doesn't interest me. I also heard that 300 is based on a video game too.

No the movie 300 was adapted from the graphic novel 300 by Frank Miller. I got it, it rules! :D

Let me break down the origins. Frank Miller, as a kid saw the movie "The 300 Spartans" which was made in 1962. Miller loved that movie so much. When he became a graphic artist, he decided to make a graphic novel based on the battle. Then the movie comes along.

So there you have it. A movie based on a graphic novel based on a movie.

No. Sparta looses. There was no possible chance for them to win. They were extremely outnumbered. Over 100,000 Persians (The trailer says 1 Million, but that's just there to build up suspense) and only 300 Spartans. What set them apart was how long they held back the Persians from reaching Sparta. They all died, yes, that was eminent. But they never planned on returning to Sparta. They knew they were all going to die one way or another and, as you hear on the trailer, their philosophy is death in the battlefield is the greatese glory for any warrior. They just wanted to take out as many Persians as they possible could (which turned out to be a surprisingly large amount).

Actually, if the Persians hadn't found that pass that took them around the Thermopolaye Pass and behind the Spartan army, then they could have potentially beaten them back. The reason being, because the Spartans' strength was in their ranks, and holding their formation. They also had metal armor, metal shields, and were trained to be soldiers since the age of... about 7, I think.

Well, to better explain this, the more historically accurate version of the battle is this:

The 300 Spartans, along with a few thousand other soldiers from the other Greek city-states, with the Athenian Navy holding the Thermopolaye Straight, beat back two Persian attacks before they found the path around the Thermopolaye Pass, and behind the Greek Army. The Persians, coming across the force, send in their normal troops against the Spartans. They first fire their arrows at them (a Persian negotiator told them, after the Spartans refused to lay down their arms, "Be warned: Our arrows will blot out the sun!" A Spartan officer (I forget his name) replied "Then we will fight in the shade.") The arrows, however, just bounced off the Greek's metal armor and shields, and did pretty much nothing. So then the light infantry of the Persian army went in. They had very little armor, and were more meant for speed rather than close-quarters combat, and they were decimated, practically. So the next day, Xerxes sent in his heavy infantry, what were called "The Immortals". They had rather light scale armor, and basket-woven shields, and they wore black cloths over their faces that made the Spartans unable to see their faces. They also tried intimidation through silence. They never spoke or anything. So the Immortals go in at the Spartans, and the same thing happens as the previous day: the Persians that were sent in are decimated. Then, at some point, Xerxes somehow finds out about the path that will take him to the other side of the Greek army, and so he takes it, and finds no resistance. However, there were soldiers stationed at the path, but they fled to their villages, thinking the Persians were going to attack their villages. So, knowing that they were surrounded, most of the Greek army left. However, the 300 Spartans and 1,000 soldiers from the city-state of Thespia stayed. Even though this isn't the same as just 300 fending off thousands upon thousands, the remaining 1,300 Greek soldiers are still far outmatched. So, the Persian Immortals came at the Greeks on both sides, and then their lines were broken, and so then it was chaos until the last of the Greek soldiers fell. So, once the Greeks were out of the way of the Thermopolaye Pass, the Persians continued to their goal; to loot and burn Athens to the ground, which they did.

They looted and burnt Athens to the ground?

I'm pretty sure before the battle at Thermopalyae was over a runner was sent to Athens to warn the Greeks about the approaching Persians but more importantly to stand and fight due to the high success of those at Thermopalyae. Unless I'm confusing this with another Greek story :/

Anyway didn't most Greek city states then amass near Athens and beat the Persians back?

A greek man informed Xerses of the other path. And you made a little mistake: Persians finished the job using arrows. :P

Well, yeah, that's true. Kinda ironic, since the arrows didn't do anything at the beginning, and yet they are what finish off the last of the Spartans, but that's probably because they couldn't use their shields as well against a volley from all directions (or had just lost them), whereas in the beginning, the arrows came from one side and the Spartans could use their shields a little more effectively.

Yes, there was a scout that told of the approaching army, which is why the Greeks had assembled in Thermopalaye in the first place. You might be thinking of the runner from Marathon who ran 26 miles from the battle site to Athens to tell the Athenians that they had won the battle, but that's kinda different, since the battle of Marathon was decades before Thermopalaye.

Actually, the entire reason the Persians were there was to burn Athens to the ground, as the Athenians had sent soldiers to support an uprising against the Persian Empire in this city across the Agean Sea some time ago. They did go to Athens and burn it to the ground, (I don't think they looted it, now that I think about it... but they may have). The Athenian Navy, which after the battle was kinda pointless since the Persians were able to get past Thermopalaye once they defeated the land forces standing in their way, sailed back to Athens, and knowing that the Persians were on their way, consulted the Oracle of Delphi on what they should do. She said something about taking shelter behind wooden walls, where the people of Athens would be safe. Most thought it meant that they should defend Athens, but the commander of the Athenian Navy believed it meant to shelter them behind the wooden walls of their ships. So, the final decision was to evacuate the city. So once the Persians got there, Athens was pretty vacant, so they just set fire to everything and then left, never to return to Greece.

The city-states didn't amass at Athens to defend it, but they all did amass at Thermopalaye. However, after the Persians left, the Greeks did become more of a unified culture, rather than a bunch of city-states that used to fight each other a lot, so in a way they kind of went back and beat the Persians in a few other battles later on to sort of "avenge Athens" I guess... but I'm not sure about those details.
