Sounds like a good idea as people who know each other more can talk better without others who are new butting in saying 'what are you talking about' or whatever..but you can just use messengers if you just want to talk to one certain person or just pm them.. few other bad points against it: most old members leave, or have left already so there'll be like 5 people in there, there's enough boxes already, it's just making 'groups' on the site and so it'll just stop socialising with new people basically and excluding them.. just because they are new to the site doesn't make them idiots who you shouldn't talk to.
Your choice on this, but I vote no. =)
Most people will probably vote yes on this anyway.. since most others are >.>

I think it's a great idea ! I love talking with the older members, besides, before 2006 there were actually goood conversations on the SB and the RP. Iit would be SO much fun looking forward to chatting with the people on the site. Now, it's like 'oh my, ANOTHER newbie ? Are they like the rest?' I mean, yeah, some SOME of the newbies have learned after...what? A month or two maybe ? But still, I have so much more fun chatting with the members I first encountered on the site, like loz, bruno, kodiwolf, etc. o_O Even my new friends who've been here (for like a year) like Silver Deni.

Anyway, I voted yes o_O

Eh, I don't think so.

First of all, aren't the older members supposed to make newbies feel welcomed? If they're separated, then the newbies are only able to talk to other newbies, which doesn't really help them.

Unless I misunderstood, I don't think anyone would benefit. If older members don't want to talk to newbies, then they don't have to.

As a newbie, I voted no. Older member can warn newbie, but... well.... it'll make a war. But I still say, no.

I voted yes, even though I am, *gasp* a newbie. I can honestly say that I have never visted the shout box at all, because the things being discussed there (homework and parents grouding you) make me feel like I'm trapped in a Disney Channel show. Honestly, I think it might be nice to have a place for the more mature or experienced members (even if I don't get counted as one right away; I have no problem "paying my dues"). Although, steet, I think there is definately something to the idea that there will be mega-wars about it. Just look where something as simple as a rule about no gay fiction got us. Now the comment box has been besieged with rediculous posts and screaming for no reason (yes, I did comment, but I thought my comment was relatively calm and without unnecessary name-calling).

Well that's the current problem : very few "older members" go on the shout box anymore...So the shout box is already crowded with newbies. It wouldn't get really worse in the normal shout box anyway.

What are you talking about? Lots of people talk to newbies, it's just a select few that dislike them and ignore them. I've seen people welcome them with open arms and I've seen some people go "EW! N00B!!!11!1!"

Really? I'm on the shoutbox more than the forum, and I hardly ever see it crowded with newbies. A newbie only comes on the shoutbox probably once every hour, and even then, the older members welcome them politely and everything goes fine.

Hmm...I would have to think about this one. But I think some people are overreacting. Whenever a newbie comes on they are always welcomed with open arms and most of them speak chatspeak at a tolerable level (or not at all). There are some black sheep who do speek an intolerable level of chatspeak, but they are usually banned and as I said they are very few.
Though I am still undecided on doing this, I guess the only thing to do is to test it and see if it works.

Well I know I don't come often on the regular shout box, but when I check, I often see newbies. Maybe it depends on the hours.

Hmmm...Maybe it depends on the hours, I don't know. But not all newbies spout SMS language all the time.
