I saw the statue in Central Park (well, of course, since I live in New York), and would love to see the real Balto. I've seen some photos, and it's actually kind of creepy, knowing that that dog use to breathe, blink, eat food. . . But yeah, still want to see it!

Yeah, it can be a little creepy. But remember one thing...what you'd looking at is not really Balto, or Togo, or Fritz...it is only the tanned skin and fur. The rest of the body (including the nose and eyes) were either discarded (which is probably what happened), or they could have been lovingly buried or even cremated. I do not know what happened to the remains of the three dogs, except that Togo's skeleton was preserved and mounted, and sits in storage in the Peabody Museum of Natural History, of Yale University.
But for Balto and Fritz? What happened to their remains is a mystery. It is nice to think that the taxidermists, in each case, simply didn't trash the remains, but rather committed them to their owners to be buried or cremated (my personal beliefs would prefer the former, but I am also a bit of a realist...). Either way, it would have been a messy affair. And its' best not to go into too much detail about that.
If you want pics, you are welcome to see my related topic on this, in this board: http://baltosource.timduru.org/board/viewtopic.php?t=7535. There is also this one: http://baltosource.timduru.org/board/viewtopic.php?t=288.

As far as I know, the display of the Balto mount is a permanent one at the museum. It's not a seasonal or part-time (temporary) display. You should be able to go there whenever you want and see it.

I heard there was as well, about the true story. But there isn't much info on it. I have seen a poster, If you search around on the BS articles you should find it i think.

Remember to also stop by the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and visit the Balto and Togo statues, near where Balto and his team's original pen used to be (where the wolf pen is now)! And take pics!

Well, you'd only see Balto if you go to the museum. Togo's mount is in Wasilla, Alaska. There are a pair of statues, memorializing Balto and Togo, at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, but that's it.

You...would, but you...wouldn't. So which is it?
Oh, and let's be realistic here: humans are never subjected to taxidermy themselves, and really, once Balto was dead, I really don't think it mattered much to him (it couldn't possibly enter into his mind when he was alive...he would not have understood what they were going to do even if they explained it to him. He was a dog...a great dog, yes...but a DOG nevertheless.).
