"Okay, they work better," Rue said, almost raising her hands in surrender. She didn't though, and picked up two flat-sided stones instead.

Li wiggled as Rue grabbed the stones and walked over to the pile of wood. He had seen his parents and siblings light fires many times at home, and it never ceased to amaze him at how the sparks would just jump out of the rocks and light the fuel. "Want to see?" Setsuko mumbled to him, walking a bit closer to the pile.

Rue scraped the two rocks together in a fluid, practiced motion, and after a few seconds of this, a spark leapt of the stone and onto the wood. Soon, a fire was going.

Li clapped, amusement written all over his face.

Rue grinned at Li, and Maddy, hwo had thought ahead for once, handed her a few fish, with sticks already through them. Rue took them. "THanks," she said, and watched as her daughter's face lit up as she smiled.

"Can I have one?" Sumi grunted in the most polite way he could. "Oh, you've got the fire going? Great!" Said Kuilak, walking into the scene followed by Kanna and Misaki.

Rue handed him one, resisting the urge to tell him to say please.

Tess waved a little in Misaki's direction.

"Thanks," Said Sumi, taking the stick. Misaki waved back at Tess, smiling widely.

Tess grinned, and walked over to her, suddenly longing to talk to someone her own age.

"How are you?" Misaki greeted, giggling at how formal that sounded.

"Great," Tess replied, widening her smile. "What about you?"

"Preeeeetty gooooood," replied Misaki, drawing out the words and flashing her smile, which revealed her missing tooth. her stomach rumbled suddenly. "Except that I'm hungry!" She laughed.

"So am i<" Tess said, joining in Misaki's laughter with her own giggles.

Kya smiled as her sister laughed with a newfound friend. Kya was only 11, but she just wasn't naturally one of those playful little kids like her siblings. Sumi once had been, but over the recent years, something changed. Kya had yet to figure out what had happened to her brother. She knew that their dad had been a bit edgy like that when he was Sumi's age, but Kya still couldn't seem to understand it.

Rue's mouth twitched as it formed a smile, having overheard their light-hearted giggles.
