Shar blinked tears away from her eyes and told herself to stop crying. Darla was out and that was what mattered. The dogs were getting closer, she could see the bloodthirsty glint in their eyes. Shar whipped round and started to run, still more or less following the scent trail of Jaka and Dawn. She careered through the forest, her four paws thudding loudly on the ground as she tried to get away from this nightmare. This has to be a nightmare, it's too horrible to be reality she thought, but she knew it wasn't true. Her paw caught on a branch and she stumbled and tripped, crashing into the soft earth, and let out a loud yelp of fear and pain.
'Maybe, they seem to be heading this way. Karba, take Dawn away to safety and then return here, Trooper and me will defend this place as well as we can, we can't lose a den like this' Jaka said in a low voice. He turned to Dawn, worry and love mixed into his face, and he licked her gently. 'Go, we wil be fine, I just want to keep you safe' he muttered.
Karba woke with a jump and hurried after his brother, unsure what the fuss was about. He heard the dogs barking and snarled gently, staring in the direction of the sounds. He listened to Jaka, and after he had finished his words he nodded and walked slowly in the opposite direction of the barking, but stopped before he disappeared from sight. 'Come on Dawn, quickly' he said quietly, urging her with his eyes.

Shar breathed a sigh of thanks to any spirits that may have been watching over her at that time when she saw her sister return. She struggled to her feet and moved towards Darla, opened her mouth to say something but found herself surrounded by the snarling forms of five large dogs. She heard another growl join the others, and saw Darla snarling at them, but just to prove their dominance the dogs just barked back. The humans caught up, and Shar could see that it was hopeless, they were never going to escape. She sat back, looking at the humans with a hopeless look on her face, and then raised her head in a long mournful howl.
Karba nudged Dawn and smiled at her. 'You like him then, I'm glad you have found someone you can trust' he said quietly, and then bowed his head and continued running.
'Maybe, but maybe they will-' Jaka started, but stopped when he heard a howl. 'That wouldn't be the dogs would it, it sounds more like a wolf, maybe we should go and look' he said, looking at Trooper. It's up to him, I don't know whether to stay or go he thought.

Jaka sped after Trooper, his head down and his ears pinned to the side of his skull. Trooper was very fast though, and he was having a hard time keeping up. He saw Trooper disappear through some bushes, and then he heard the gunshot. It made him freeze in his tracks, but he skidded so that he was just behind the bushes, and the sight was a very strange one. Trooper was lying motionless and bloodied on the ground, and Darla was tearing at a human's throat. The sight made him feel weak, helpless, but he couldn't let Darla kill the man. He dove forwards, crying out wordlessly to Darla before bowling into her in an attemt to throw her off the man.
Shar heard the gunshot and watched as time seemed to slow for Trooper's fall to the ground. As he hit the ground, she heard the snarl of Darla behind her, and as she turned her head she saw Jaka crashing into her. Anger rose, a bubbling black anger that overpowered her senses, and she used the anger to find the strength to stand. Her eyes blazed, and her teeth were revealed as her lips were pulled back into a snarling grin. She dove at the dogs, killing the first one instantly. Everything seemed a blur, things would move in slow motion and then suddenly be moving a lot faster than normal. Colours, sounds and smells were all more vivid, and the taste of blood hung in her jaws.

Jaka repinned Darla silently when she killed a dog. He lowered his face closer to hears and growled, not an aggressive growl, but one he hoped would make her stop. 'Listen Darla, I can't let you kill these humans, if you do it will make the whole situation worse. Just come back with me and Shar. I'm so sorry Darla, but this isn't the right way to avenge your brother' he whispered sharply in her ear. He eyed the humans angrily, daring them to try and shoot any of them.
Shar howled again, but this time there was no sorrow or dispair in it, it was anger and bloodthirst. She snarled at all of the remaining dogs, keeping her back to the humans. One had managed to get past her, which Darla had swiftly killed. She hadn't really noticed Jaka pinning her sister, but her anger was slowly beginning to subside. It was then that the horrible truth really dawned on her. Trooper is dead, Trooper is DEAD! she screamed in her mind, and tears brimmed in her eyes.

Jaka could see the humans tensing, they were going to strike soon, they had to get away. He leapt over to Darla, nudging her gently. He didn't want to seem cruel, but if she stayed here then she was in danger. 'Listen to me Darla, if you stay here more of your family will be shot, run and find Karba and tell him to meet me here, I won't let them take your brother' he hissed, nudging her more forcefully. He looked over at Shar and gave her a curt nod in the direction of the den.
Shar had taken a step towards Trooper, hardly daring to believe the savage truth. As her sister fell about him, crying and screaming, she felt her legs go weak with the shock. She watched wordlessly, noiselessly, as Jaka whispered something to Darla, and then turn to look at her. He nodded towards the den, and the message managed to get through her shock. She stumbled over and helped to try and get Darla away, although her expression was blank.

(So how is the fanfic going, is there any part of it that you want me to write up because I would be happy to do so, I have nearly finished Brahma's story)

Shar bounded quickly after Darla, glad to be away from the past moment. As they neared the den, Shar felt like her legs were going to give way. Images from before flashed through her mind, and she gave a little shudder at the memory of all the blood and death. She didn't let Darla out of her sight the whole time, but in the back of her mind she was worried for Dawn, how would she react when she found out about Trooper, and that Jaka had stayed behind.
Jaka watched the girls run, and felt a bit better about the situation. He hoped, with the smallest spark of hope he had left, that somehow Trooper could still be alive, but everything screamed that he was. He turned to face the humans, only two left, but he didn't attack of growl. He just stood there, facing them with an indignant look on hs face, trying to tell them he was not about to leave. One of them raised his gun, but Jaka stood his ground, watching carefully. The other one eyed him, and then turned to his partner and placed his hand upon the gun, forcing it down. He then whistled to the dogs, who had been growling the whole time, and the group left.

(I hope that's ok, I just thought that because the humans had seen how all of them had been so sad that they would have shown some emotion)

Shar could feel her face and throat burning, and it was taking all her strength not to cry there and then. Later, crying can come later she thought. She saw Darla's hurt expression, the pain and sadness in her eyes seemed more intense than her own, but Shar wasn't sure how that could be possible. She peered out into the growing darkness of the night, wishing that the past few days had not happened. Once again an anger flared inside of her, and there was only one thing she could think to aim it at. Jaka! It's always his fault, why did he come, why did he have to meet us, why Trooper she thought in exasperation. But she remembered how he had wanted to stay behind to defend Trooper's body, and how he could be dead now because of that, and her anger vanished leaving her emptier than before.

As soon as the humans left his sight, Jaka whipped round to nose at Trooper. 'Please, please be alright, for your family's sake' he gasped under his breath, nudging Trooper's fur quite roughly. He thought to Dawn and Darla and Karba and Shar, all of them needed their brother, everyone in the pack did, even him.
