Balto looked away from Jenna for a moment, to see Fang inching his way towards them. Given how sweet Rosy was, even with all of Balto’s persuasion, it was clear that Fang was still incredibly uneasy about interacting with strangers. It was a tough shell to come out of, as Balto well knew.

His eyes returned to look at Jenna’s concerned expression. He could remember when she first really gave him notice. Whatever breeze stole Rosy’s hat for Balto to retrieve was hugely responsible for urging him to finally act on his feelings. He was so grateful it did.

“Everything went fine, don’t worry. Sally was on watch for us for at least some of the night. She’s on the boat, if you were wondering.” He gestured with his a quick jerk of head his behind him. “We’re not sure how Rosy would react to her. You know how humans can be.” He frowned.

”Fang and I were both exhausted from yesterday; he just woke up as you two were walking up. I’d probably still be sleeping too, if I wasn’t so anxious for Kodi and his team to get back. Have you heard anything about… that?”

His question fizzled as he heard Fang’s paws deliberately crunch through the snow beside Balto. He knew that Rosy wouldn’t overreact, but Balto could sense that this was a pivotal moment for the young hybrid. If Fang ever wanted to be on a sled team, mail or not, he had to learn to trust his human caretakers. He waited with bated breath to see how Fang’s new genesis of human contact would prevail.

Jenna nodded. "I can understand," she said, knowing that, despite her loving heart, Rosie's parents had been very clear she shouldn't approach skunks after word got around about a certain pack of dogs getting sprayed. She looked at Fang and gave a small, reassuring smile towards the dog. She could understand why he was scared, he'd been treated badly because of his nature as a hybred, on top of the fact he was also Steele's son. "It'll be ok, Fang, I promise."

Rosie came up and scratched Balto's ears. "Hey Balto! How are you doing?" she asked, giving him a hug. "Did you like the present I got you yesterday?" she asked, smiling to the big hybred. She then saw Fang, standing nearby, staring catiously at her. "Oh, hello there," she said, looking the dog over, wondering just how he was, after all, she'd never seen him before. "Come here," she said, holding out her hand. "It's alright, I'm not going to hurt you."

Fang slowly approached, cationously. He sniffed her hand and came closer, at which point Rosie gently petted him, something he wasn't used to. But he found himself enjoying it, tail wagging.

Balto watched Fang experience what was likely to be his very first petting from a human. He looked so awkward, but his nervous hesitation quickly changed to pleasure. Balto couldn’t help but adorn a huge smile on his face.

“I predict a bright future for that one. Just think of how much he’s learned in the last three days alone.” Balto told Jenna, tearing himself away from the heartwarming sight. “You saw us training yesterday, right? He did really well for a first timer.” Balto complimented.

He leaned to the ground, and stretched his legs out in front of him, eager to quell the soreness that had managed to seep its way into his shoulders. His muscled that had ached dully now found relief, only to be rid of the newfound sensation in a manner of seconds. The hurt returned twofold for an instant, causing Balto to twinge ever so slightly.

“Only thing is, I think I may have pushed him – or us, rather- a bit too much yesterday. I know he’s eager to learn, but I hope that he doesn’t mind a couple of days off. It won’t do him any good for him to practically kill himself right out of the gate.” Balto reiterated. “Maybe Kodi can help with that when he gets back. At the very least, it can give me a chance to recuperate.” He wasn’t as spry as he used to be, and Balto was fairly sure that Fang would recover much quicker than Balto would.

He looked at the sun, trying to judge the time in the day. It was relatively early yet. There’s no way that Kodi and his team would be back anytime soon, not with the route detour they were facing. He sighed, and thought about what Sally told him the night before. He was sure Kodi would forgive him, he was just sure of it. So why was it he felt his stomach churning at the very thought of seeing his son again?

Without any warning, he gave Jenna a long, warm nuzzle. He hated that he hadn’t told her yet. He so badly wanted to! However, he knew this was something he needed to deal with on his own.

The side of his face still enveloped by the soft fur on the side of her head and neck, he whispered to Jenna “Do you think they will make it back in time for tonight? I- I would uh, I would hate to have him miss our traditional Christmas Eve celebrations.” Balto couldn’t imagine a less fitting time to be at ends with his own kin, on what was almost always the happiest and most serene night of the year.

Rosie looked the dog before her over closely, she'd never seen him before, that was for sure. She could see the simularities he had to Steele, but she really didn't care, even if she knew Steele had abandoned his team, something the humans had pieced togather from what was known. She didn't judge based on looks. She also noticed that he had wolfish looks too, but that obviously didn't bother her much either, not after what happened with Balto.

"I've never seen you around here, are you Balto's friend?" asked Rosie, not caring he couldn't talk. Much like Mr. Simpson, she was alert to how dogs communicated with people and could tell what they were trying to tell her. It was just something that happened when you hung around dogs.

Fang noticed Rosie's analytic glance, but if she knew he was Steele's son, she must not have cared much. She was actually being nice to him...He wasn't used to something like that. At her question, he nodded. Though student was probably more accurate, he had no way of showing that.

Rosie watched Fang's nod and gave one back. "That's good, he's a good dog," she said, giving her savior a small smile. She then looked back to Fang, noticing his namesake, the single fang sticking out of the side of his mouth. "How did your fang get like that, boy?" she asked, curiously.

Fang gave a happy bark at the mention of his name, trying to get it across that was his name.

Rosie blinked at his reaction, noting his tail wag at the mention of the word fang. "Fang?" she asked, himreacting much the same as before. "Is that your name, boy?" she asked, getting him to nod with a bark. "Fang, that's a nice name."

Jenna smiled at Rosie finding out Fang's name. "That's the advantage of having a simple name I suppose, it's easy to let humans know about," she stated, then turned to Balto, listening to him say how he was hurting. "Oh, I'm sorry your hurting," she said, licking his cheek lightly.

"I checked with Moris, the sled team left White Mountain this morning," explained Jenna, giving him a reassuring look. "And I'm sure they'll get here in time, the trip down' take that long really."

Balto offered a sigh of relief. It was a good thing Jenna had already asked Morse about the team; it was the first thing Balto was going to go and take check after they had left for the morning.

“I’ll be just fine now, don’t you worry!” Balto exclaimed. “Jenna, you’re a lifesaver!” He expressed his gratefulness to her, perhaps with a tad more enthusiasm than was necessary. “Sorry if I’m acting so darn excited, but I was just really worried that they wouldn’t make it in time.” That much was true, at least. The primarily human holiday had an infectious nature about it, something he couldn’t explain. It was as though the need for connection was fully realized and more apparent than ever on those strange days before the New Year arrived.

His soreness seemed to have vanished, replaced with the joys he felt around him. Fang was coming into his own, his loving companion was here with him, and his son was coming back home! Now, all they had to do was wait for Kodi to arrive. Balto suspected that time would slow to a crawl if they spent all day waiting in front of the Post Office, so he hoped that he, Fang, Jenna, and hopefully Sally could do something together to pass the time. He would feel especially terrible if Sally didn’t get to participate in a proper Christmas celebration with her son.

“Well, I suppose…” Balto started, admiring the simple yet apt resolution of Fang’s namesake on Rosy’s behalf. “What were your plans for this evening? Was your family doing anything special again this year?” He inquired to Jenna. He hoped that if they did, they wouldn’t mind another participant. He could tell from Rosy’s gentle stroking of Fang’s head that at least one of them would be more than happy to oblige.

"Just our normal Christmas party, nothing else that I know of," explained Jenna, thinking about it. "But I was thinking we dogs should have our own little thing. Maybe find somewhere and just have our own little celebration. That way Sally could join us and all that," she stated, trying to think about where they could go. "Maybe up on the hill, put the "northern lights" up, I'm sure we could find some meat somewhere..."

Fang blushed at the human's nice words. He gave a grateful bark and tail wag. He wasn't used to this, but he was more than happy about it. He'd wanted someone to accept him all his life, and now here was a human doing just that.

"Your a good boy, aren't you?" asked Rosie, smiling to the dog. "I'm glad to meet you, any friend of Balto's is a friend of mine..." she said, thinking about Balto. "You know, Balto saved my life, but even before that, I really liked him. He's a good dog, so I know if your his friend, you have to be," the little girl said, smiling down to the dog. "But I can tell you are, I don't know how someone couldn't see it, your so nice."

Fang couldn't help smiling. It felt so good to be called a good dog instead of "Steele's demon spawn" or something like that. It really did feel good.

Balto nodded profusely in agreement. He wasn’t surprised that Jenna would think along the same lines that he was regarding Sally being left out or excluded. He had been invited to attend her families Christmas party the year before, and while it was still a good deal fulfilling, it was decidedly more of a “human” get together. Their abode, while certainly accommodating, simply was not the most spacious to have several dogs meandering about among the throngs of humans that would attend. They ended up spending more time outside anyways.

At the time, Kodi had only just begun to spread his wings on the sled team, so none of the others from his team were all too interested in attending with him. Balto shuddered at the thought of having THAT many more joining them in that small house, since they would most definitely be wanting to this year. He was surprised he hadn’t thought of it before.

“It sounds like a great idea, I love it.” He told her. “Speaking of meat, I think it’s about time that we got Fang something to eat for breakfast.” He was hungry himself, but something he had learned as a father when it came to food was that your children always came first. Granted, Fang wasn’t one of his own kin, but neither were Ralph, Kirby, or Dusty. He considered all of them to be a part of his family, even if they weren’t related by blood. If Fang wound up on the team with them, it would fit the frame most splendidly.

Rosie didn't want to leave Fang feeling he wasn't wanted, but finally ended her sesson with him with a hug around his neck before skipping over to Balto. She was older now, but still a young girl, but even as she grew, she kept her outlook on the world much the same as she always had. "Goodmorning, Balto," she said, rubbing the old wolfdog's head. "Did you sleep well last night?" she asked. "I hope my present helpped you."

Jenna smiled at her owner, the kindhearted girl. Rosie was a good human, a good ANYTHING for that matter. She had a kind, caring heart and could tell what someone was really like. Even though she'd cheered Steele on in the races, she had admitted that Steele didn't seem like a nice dog, she just cheered for the team she liked best and Steele just happened to lead the team she liked. She liked Balto because even before she owned him her life. And that meant a lot to Balto.

Fang didn't exactly know how to react. Petting? That was new, the affection was all so new to him. His mother, both of them, really and truly loved him, but the affection from a human was something he'd never really recieved before. The hug was a completely alien thing to him, but one he found full of warmth and acceptence...He was accepted...He didn't quite understand, but he really liked it.

Balto pushed his cold wet nose into the palm of Rosy’s hand, eagerly demonstrating his affection for the human. Although he couldn’t answer as elaborately as he would have liked, he hoped his quiet, almost gruff bark would suffice to quell her questions. But then, Balto had a better idea.

Giving her small lap from his tongue, he quickly shuffled to the right. Making his way around bow of the boat, he scooted his way up the ramp to the deck of the moored ship. He stuck his head in the wheelhouse, looking for the handcrafted stuffed doll of himself. He panicked at first when he couldn’t find it right away, but quickly recollected himself when he swept the brown blanket aside. Though it was a brief contact, he could feel that the blanket was still warm against his paw from Fang’s peaceable slumber. As the fabric gently scraped along the wooden floor, Rosy’s gift tumbled out from underneath. With a look of satisfaction on his face, he scooped it up into his mouth, gently grasping it with teeth.

As he made his way back to his company, he took extra care to avoid moving too quickly or jaggedly in an effort to keep mini-Balto from tearing. He didn’t particularly mind the slower gait; he didn’t feel like exacerbating the gnawingly irritating soreness further.

As quickly as he’d left, he returned with her gift in tow. He hoped now that she would understand just how well he and the other dogs could understand her, and how, if need be, they could communicate with her.

Stepping in front of Rosy, nearly tracing his paw prints from before, he sat down to offer the token she’d given him. It was his proof that he valued so highly how she treated him, from when he was considered a bother way back when, to his positive reception nowadays. She would always be special to him that in that regard.

No sooner than when he sat down, than did his own body communicate inadvertently. Balto quickly remember what he had been talking about with Jenna before he left; Breakfast. His tail twitched with a touch of embarrassment as his stomach emitted a growl.

Rosie smiled, looking as Balto returned with mini-Balto. "I'm glad you liked it, boy," she said, scratching him behind the ears and giving him a hug. She then heard his stomach growl, Fang's too. "You two sound hungry," she said, giving a smile. She knew Balto had to find his own food a lot, but being Christmas Eve, she didn't want him to risk going hungry. Reaching into her bag, she pulled out a chain of sausages. "I wasn't expecting another dog here, so you'll have to share, but I think it's enough, Merry Christmas," she said, laying them out for the two dogs.

Fang's mouth watered at the sight before him, but he was hesitant to take it. He WANTED it, that was for sure. But one, it was offered to Balto, not him, and two, he'd never quite gotten a good reception to trying to eat meat other than out of a garbage can. So he wanted until Balto told him it was ok to do so.

Balto’s tail spoke volumes on its own. It bounced through the air, waving madly to the left and right. This was definitely a great way to start the day! He looked at Jenna, offering a wry smile. Her vague mention of “finding some meat somewhere…” was certainly a good disguise if she indeed knew about Rosy’s intentions. With the powerful aroma of the sausages once they were freed from the confines of the bag, Balto had doubts she wasn’t at least somewhat aware.

Balto’s salivary glands kicked in, and as a result, he abstained from covering Rosy’s fingers in his slobber. “Oh, wow… that smells heavenly.” He commented. However, the main reason Balto had brought up breakfast in the first place was not to feed himself (though he certainly wouldn’t say no!), but rather to feed the underfed Fang next to him. It was made evident that Fang also shared Balto’s sentiment regarding the delectable links on the ground in front of the two by Fang’s own tongue hanging from his mouth in anticipation.

Judging from the curiosity swirling with the hunger in Fang’s blue eyes, Balto had to wonder if Fang had ever had a proper cut of meat before. From what Sally had mentioned, he refused to stoop to stealing food from others (something his father most certainly had no qualms about), which meant he didn’t exactly have the capacity to make a lot of choices when it came to food. Furthermore, Balto suspected that Fang’s wolfish appearance lent him a conceivably small amount of favor from the butchers living in the various towns and cities he had travelled through.

Balto knelt down as if he were going to begin eating the sausages, but instead pushed the unbroken links towards Fang with his muzzle. The pungent smell infiltrated Balto’s sensitive nostrils as he did so, but he knew better.

“…Here.” He said as he stood up and took a step backwards from his offering. “I’ve had plenty before, and I think it’s high time you got a chance to taste some fresh.” He reasoned. “Rosy told us to share, so I won’t take no for an answer!”

Fang blinked, looking slowly up to Rosie. He then cautously prodded the meat with his nose. It smelled so good...Hesitantly, he took a link and chewed it up, relishing it. He'd never had anything other than animals he or Sally managed to catch when it came to fresh meat, and for a dog raised by a skunk and the skunk herself, that wasn't a lot of food to go around, mostly squirrels. "It's really good..." he said, trying not to talk with his mouth full. He ate two more links with the same degree of enjoyment, but then looked to Balto. "It'd be rude of me to eat all of it, wouldn't it?" he asked, knowing that SHARE meant both of them. "She said share after all..."

Jenna smiled, seeing plain as day the differences between Fang and his father. Steele was greedy, selfish, and never shared unless he was doing it to impress a pretty girl. Fang on the other paw barely had any sense of greed to him. He didn't consider it right to even eat someone else's meat when it was offered until he was flat out told. He was just the polar opposite of Steele in that respect.

“Of course…” Balto conceded. He snapped off four sausages from the chain on the ground. He didn’t intend to eat all of them. Whether Rosy knew it or not, there was another member among the animals that hadn’t yet eaten. From the four he had, Balto separated a segment, tugging on the gristly bit at the end with his teeth, and pushing the second sausage away with his front paws. He was careful not to damage it too much. With just a little more force, the one sausage sprang loose from the sinewy connection, and it hang from his mouth, his teeth gripping it as loosely as possible without it falling out.

He bowed his head to the ground, recovering the doll that he had set down on a rock so that he could grab the breakfast. Sausage still wedged by a thread in his teeth, he managed to clasp his doll as well. He imagined that to Rosy and the others, he looked quite silly, carrying both a doll and a sausage link from his teeth. He didn’t mind too much altogether, and laughed silently at himself as he made his way up the boat once again. Approaching the wheelhouse, he secured mini-Balto underneath his blanket again.

The scent from the sausage dangling in front of him was overwhelming at this point, but he couldn’t let it deter him. This particular bit was not for him; rather, it was for Sally. He stood on the deck of the boat, and eased the pressure holding the sausage securely in his jaws by just a fraction. It was enough for the meat to fall to the ground, making a soft plopping noise as it rolled several times upon landing on the wooden surface of the boat.

He looked around for signs of Fang’s mother. She couldn’t have gone too far, but wherever she was hiding was certainly effective; he couldn’t see her. With the sausage’s aroma occupying his sense of smell still, he couldn’t locate her by scent either.

“Sally?” He called out, turning his head as he repeated her name several more times. “How would you like some breakfast?” Balto questioned to her unknown presence. He’d certainly feel foolish if she wasn’t actually there. Sight or smell notwithstanding, he had a strange feeling she was. It was a notion that was, often times, just as effective as his eyes, ears, or nose could interpret.

Sally poked her head out of her hiding spot, the scent hitting her nose. She slowly walked out and looked at it, giving Balto a smile. "Why thank you Balto, that was very thoughtful of you," she said, giving him a grateful nod. She ate the sausage slowly, enjoying it. "You're a kindhearted one, Balto," she said, finishing her meal. "Thank you very much, I needed a little breakfest...though to me it'd normally be dinner, all things considered," she said, looking up at the wolf dog that had so kindly shared his meal with her.

Sally looked at Rosie, who was petting Fang and giving him affection, causing Sally to smile. "That does my heart good..." she said, happy for her foster child. "That's the kind of thing he's wanted his entire life, it feels so good to finally see him have it...It was sad watching a little puppy be shewed away by everyone he met, or the parents of everyone he met. It hurt him so much..."

Balto watched the flourishing trust and friendship between Rosy and Fang grow below him. She had taken quite shine to him. He wasn’t all that surprised really. Fang was certainly friendly enough, and Rosy, unlike the humans that Sally had described (and ones that Balto was keenly familiar with from years ago) was open to getting to know someone or something based on their demeanor as opposed to their appearance. Balto could relate.

Sensing the oddest tingle of déjà vu, Balto opted to change the subject, fearing a dampening of spirits if they dwelled upon past indifferences. “I’m glad you enjoyed it. Nome’s butcher certainly has a way with his craft. It was awfully generous of Rosy to bring that out here for us.” His stomach growled again, the mention of the meal rousing his appetite once again. “I guess I should eat some too. I’m not hungry, but I am. If that makes any sense…” He didn’t feel like eating. His stomach churned as he thought of greeting his son, and the myriad of outcomes that came with it. He anxiously began to pace back and forth, inching closer towards the ramp on each successive circuit.

“Listen, I’m going to get back before I’m missed. I’ll find out what’s going on for the rest of the day, and let you know, alright?” Balto didn’t like acting like a messenger between Sally and the others. It wasn’t that he minded the actual task of relaying information, but he simply felt it wasn’t necessary. Unfortunately, there was always that stigma about skunks that even Rosy might not be able to overcome. He rounded the bend, approaching Jenna, Fang, and Rosy once again. Offering an explanation this time, he told Fang and Jenna. “Sorry about that. I just gave Sally some breakfast too.”

Fang appeared to be handily occupied tangling with Rosy’s gentle strokes, so he didn’t answer straight away. Balto cracked a smile at how quickly Fang had become accustomed to this form of contact, and offered his query to Jenna. “So, any ideas on what to do today?” He desperately wanted to know. Idly waiting for his son to return would be a painful process on its own.
