In the Name of Aniu (Sequel to Balto: Alternate Ending)

(Ooc: Oh, no that's fine ^.^ It was a good post, lol.)

Keso grinned as he heard the bark of pain and glanced over to where Milo had once stood, Cale now filling that place. He watched as Gunther finally fell and the other Hailstorm wolf took his place as well before the three began to advance. Keso's plan to remain out of sight had been ruined now surely. The husky fae had noticed them. 'Oh well, I liked the second plan better anyway.'

Keso stepped out from his hiding place and his tail fell down to the ground, almost perpendicular to it. Seeing this motion, Cale stopped himself and the other wolves and they stayed on the border line, turning around to face outward almost noislessly. The other three wolves that Cale and brought with him then found their way across the lines and waited in the shadows as well for Keso's signal.

"Why, hello there. My, what a night to be caught unprepared like this. Your luck just hasn't been holding out lately, has it?" Keso smirked and watched the two, his eyes wild with anticipation and the wheels in his mind turning. "Now, who shall I dismember first? Should it be the little husky girl? Or perhaps the big strong male who thinks he can protecter her? Or maybe the hybrid?" Keso's teeth flashed dangerously as he glanced just inside the den to see Balto's sleeping form.

Turning from Jenna, and putting on a threatening look, he turned his body sideways(can't think of another word for this) so his side was exposed to Keso. Guarding Jenna, though he was unable to protect Balto. If Keso chose Balto, he'd have to run, exposing Jenna in order to protect Balto who now was more vulnerable in his sleep. "What do you want?" Kalgorn growled. Showing his teeth to the deadly wolf.

His fears were now confirmed. He was going to have to fight Keso to save his friends. He was willing to go this far, but he had hoped he wouldn't have to. "If you must take one of us, then im your wolf. Leave these two alone"

Jenna took a step back in shock and a quiver of fear rushed through her body. It was replaced by anger and determination, however, when Keso mentioned Balto. At that, she bared her teeth.
"You'll think twice before you lay a paw on him or anyone in there," she growled with as much ferocity as she could muster, "I won't go quietly. You'll have to kill me yourself if you want to harm them." She looked over at Kalgorn. "Kalgorn, you must warn them. Wake them up, quickly!"

Inside, Balto jolted awake as his nightmare was cut off by Jenna's voice. He only caught the last sentance, but he could tell by her tone that something had to be wrong. He got to his paws and padded out onto the ledge...

(OOC: Sorry to be picky, but Balto and Jenna can fight, they're not weak or helpless. Sorry again. I just noticed how you used 'save' so many times in regard to Balto and Jenna. Again, I apologize. I don't mean to annoy.)

Keso shook his head slowly and laughed a chilling, harsh laugh as though he'd already triumphed. His eyes snatched a glimpse of Balto as he came to the ledge and the vicious smirk stayed on his crooked maw. "Funny, I was just speaking of you. But it seems all of your votes contradict each other. Now I'll say again in more simple terms for you to understand. Who would like to die first?"

His tail flicked once and the three wolves who had concealed themselves in the shadows spread out a bit more and emerged in a semi circular arch. The other three, Cale commanding them still, stood stock still on Echo's border lines in the positions Ryder, Milo, and Gunther had held befor they fell.

Keso's tail swayed behind him in a tik tok motion that no longer really held any significance. "Come now, time's wasting. Make a decision soon or I'll be forced to chose someone at random."

(sorry, maybe 'protect' or 'help' might have been better words to use LWF)

Kalgorn wasn't surprised at Jenna's reaction. Hearing her speak, he shook his head. "You go wake them. Me and Balto can hold them off. Besides, you're faster than I am." He wasn't sure about this last sentance though. Maybe he was faster, maybe he wasn't. He had said it only to convince her to not argue and go ahead and wake Echo's pack. Then conviniantly(sp?) Balto appeared. His head poking out of the den. Slightly confused at first from sleepyness, but he soon got over that. Once again looking like the brave wolf dog he was.
When he saw that neither Jenna, or Balto stepped forward at Keso's question, and determined to buy his friends some time, he stepped forward slowly.

He took a deep breath, trying to calm his heart down which was beating against his chest. He then readied himself, spreading his front legs and bending his hind legs slightly. He now had his head bend down, the white Z on his back clearly shown in the moonlight as he waited for Keso to make his move. "Well? What are you waiting for?"

Balto stepped up beside his friend and looked quickly back at Jenna.
"Jen, go wake them, quickly!"

Jenna stood still for a moment, her mind screaming at her to go, but at the same time urging her to stay. Finally, her loyalty to her mate won out, and she bounded off into the den. Her cries echoed off the walls inside.

Balto, meanwhile, watched Kalgorn out of the corner of his eye.
"There's no need for a sacrifice, Kalgorn," he said, turning his gaze to Keso, "If he wants to harm Echo or Vella, he'll have to go through both of us."

He let a shiver of fear ripple over his body as he scanned their adversaries. Keso stood closest to them, with three wolves behind him. Cale and three other wolves stood in the treeline, on almost the exact spots that Milo, Gunther and Ryder had stood only minutes earlier. He shed a tear as he thought of them. Ryder was only just reaching adulthood, in his prime. Who knew what kind of life he would have lead? A mate? Children, perhaps? Not now. Not ever. And Milo and Gunther had still been adholecants. Young and fearless. They too would never live to know the love in a female's touch, nor hear the tiny whimper of newborn pups.
Aniu, how can you allow this to happen? he thought,
Well, if I die tonight, at least I'll see them again...

Keso narrowed his eyes at the two and shrugged. "Fine then, if you both want to go first, then be my guest. Cale! Bring the line in."

Cale turned at hearing his name and then nodded to the wolves on either side of him. They all trotted in unison up to where Keso stood and fanned out, completing the arch that the other three had begun. Cale stood at Keso's right and asked, "What would you have us do now, my lord?"

Keso smirked and replied, "Have them fan out and begin the assimilation process. You know what to do with any who disrespect our authority and refute our methods. You will stay here with me to take care of our current little road block."

Cale nodded and then turned to the other five wolves. "You heard your leader. Begin the assimilation process. Leave no den unchecked and no stone unturned. Find them all. We will join you shortly." Cale turned back towards Balto and Kalgorn as the five warriors walked off, leaving the arch to seek out the rest of Echo's pack. Cale had lowered himself into his standard attack stance and was prepared to charge at the two. All he was waiting for was Keso's permission to begin.

Keso finally looked down to Cale and nodded, a smirk on his face as he said, "You may start."

"You're wasting your time, Keso," Balto replied as Keso orderd Cale's troops to fan out, "This den is not like the others in this area. There is only one path to it, and we're standing on it." His eyes narrowed, and he bared his teeth again. "While this may be the only way out, it is also the only way in. And we won't let you through without a fight." He eyed the two cautiously, expecting their move at any moment.

Just then, Echo's good friend Treffen and his daughter Krystal came out with Jenna and stepped up on either side of the den's two defenders. No words were said, and none were needed. Their eyes held a grim determination to resist to their last breath.

Balto tensed up and waited for Cale to make his move. He hoped his bluff would work.

Kalgorn glanced beside him to (lets say Krystal) only briefly before directing his attention back fully on Keso and Cale. He wasn't familiar with this part of the forest and since Balto was, he hoped Balto was right about what he'd said. If it was a bluff, he prayed it would work. However, hoping does little to help in a situation like this. In anycase, he had no other option but to remain firm on his words, and Balto's.

It was Cale he was most worried about. He'd proven himself to be quite a capable hunter and fighter. Keso was just as dangerous but Cale seemed to be eyeing him for some reason. Not knowing why, he decided he'd been chosen at random. But even if Balto hadn't decided to help along with him, this was probably what would have happened anyway.

Readying himself for a battle that was guarenteed to be bloody just by the fact that both Keso and Cale were present. If given his way, he'd go ahead and get this started. The tension was starting to get him agitated and he almost did. He took one step forward before stopping himself.

"You may Start"

His ears went up to hear the words then fell back slightly. Not completely down, but about halfway. Showing his teeth, he focused his eyes entirely on Cale. You're ready Kalgorn. Don't back down

As the seconds ticked by, Balto became more and more nervous. Why hadn't Cale or Keso done anything? Where they only holding he, Kalgorn, Treffen, and Krystal at bay while the rest tried to find a way behind them. He tried to calm his nerves, reasoning that there was only one other way in to the den, and it was so well hidden that even members of the clan couldn't find it sometimes. His efforts did little to ease his fears.

Balto stepped aside as Jenna moved between he and Kalgorn. She was so slender, and yet she seemed willing and ready to fight. The thought of the new life she carried jolted him, though, and he gently pushed her back.
"Jen, you shouldn't be out here," he whispered.
"I won't leave you," she replied, furrowing her brow.
Balto sighed.
"Then stay behind me. I don't know what I'd do if anything happened to you."

Kalgorn felt the brush of soft fur against his side, diverting his attention. He glanced quickly at the dog who'd joined them and found himself not surprised that Jenna was with them. Though, that she'd managed to walk right between them, made Kalgorn realize just how slender her body was. He tried keeping his mind from those kind of thought, Jenna was taken. Besides, he'd find someone else. It was obvious Balto and Jenna had something more than he and Jenna could ever have. Still, one often wonders. . .
Doing the same as Balto he turned his neck towards her, "you do realize these two are. . ." he stopped halfway through. Telling her something like that would only frighten her. Instead, he stepped closer to Balto, giving Jenna two dogs to stand behind. He was already impressed by Jenna that she'd been brave enough to come back to help.

Giving her a final glance over his and Balto's backs, Kalgorn turned back toward the two deadly wolves in front of them. Cale, much closer than he'd thought the wolf would be. Then, mainly out out nerves, Kalgorn made the first strike. Attempting to claw the white wolf, he swung his paw at the wolf.

Balto instantly tensed up as Kalgorn swiped at Cale. This first strike was sure to spark a fierce battle, but he would die before any of the wolves laid a paw on Jenna. He would fight and, if necessary, die for Jenna.

He felt his muscles tighten as he prepared to make his own attack. His target was Keso. Eliminate the leader, the troops are lost, he reasoned. He only hoped he was right...

(Sorry this took so long to come! I was in Florida.)

Cale leapt to the side as he saw the movement of a paw coming at him, but only just in time. He still felt the wave of air that followed to swipe and Kalgorn's claws had managed to pull out a few strands of his fur. The white wolf narrowed his eyes and without even thinking made his own counter attack. He angled himself and then ran straight for Kalgorn, faking an upward jerk to indicate he was jumping and then crouching low and spreading his jaws and turning his head slightly to the left, trying to clasp them on the other wolf's ankle. As he did this, he would also swing his body to the right so that he would land on his left side, his momentum sliding him almost parallel to Kalgorn and he would attempt to claw him quickly and repetitively on the left side, left legs, and under his belly if he was able to reach that far.

Keso didn't blink as Cale was attacked and the battle began. He barely even glanced over at his beta, for his eyes were pinned on something he considered more important at the time being: his opponent. He watched him tense, trying to ready himself for a battle he'd never be truly prepared for. Without any kind of warning, Keso started and dashed to the right. But just as he was about to touch Balto, he wheeled to the left again in an almost circular zig zag motion, though presumably based more on impulse than on prior planning. After about his third random turn, Keso was once more headed towards Balto from the right, except this time instead of wheeling at the last second, he plunged head on towards the half breed, jaws spread towards his neck.

Kalgorn wasn't all to surprised that Cale had taken such a large advantage over him so quickly. Cale had shown himself to be quite a fighter. Kalgorn on the other hand wasn't exactly master fighting material. But he knew how to defend himself. As soon as his body had come to a stop in the snow, laying on his back. He glanced upwards toward the oncoming rabid wolf. Jaws already spread to close over his neck. Kalgorn rolled over onto his stomach, but Cale was already too close to avoid. His jaws were going to close around him somewhere. And he didn't want that place to be his neck. So, compromising, he threw his arm up in place of his neck, and felt the razor sharp teeth close around it. Turning his yelp of pain into a growl of anger, he got to his paws, using his other paw to claw and Cales head. Causing red lines to run down the albinos pure white pelt.
While, Kalgorn was busy fighting off Cale, he saw Keso make his move for Balto. He wanted to go and help his freind but Cale was proving to be quite alot to handle. If Keso started on him, he would surely die. He wasn't sure how long he would have been able to fight the two. He hoped however, that the same outcome wouldn't come from a clash betwen he and Cale.
