Rue noticed this and a tear fled down her face, slowly marking it's trail on her dappled coat. "Nook," she repeated. "I'm so sorry," she whispered.

Nook said nothing as his broken eyes traced the out line of where his leg used to be.
"Nook, don't do this." cried Vetch. "Please show us you're still the same old annoying little rodent you always were. Please." He pleaded. But all Vetch got was silence.

"Listen!" exclaimed the doctor. "We healed the rest of him! If he didn't come here, he'd have been long dead over a half over ago! You should be thanking me!" he suddenly ripped off the wrinkled skin and revealed... a gray lizard. "Do you want me to kill him now? Or save it for later?" said the ''doctor'' with an evil grin and low voice. He turned to Darryl. "Good work, officer Brown." he saluted.
Vetch gasped and grabbed Nook between his teeth, then ran out the doors, yelling, "Traitors! He set us up!"

Rue was shocked, but ran after Vetch, another tear spilling down her cheek. How am I surprised?she asked herself bitterly. It's not as if we weren't hunted from the start here.

"Rue!" yelled Vetch. "They did this to Nook! That Darryl set us up, and they're all fakes! Every one of 'em!" Then he remembered. The trees. "The trees!" he added. "We have to go to the trees! They're the only ones who haven't betrayed us!" Then, softer, "Hang on, Nook..."
