"He went to the butcher, I think he said he was getting some meat for his dogs, and me I suppose," said Sable, looking up. She looked over the two dogs analytically, as she had a habit of doing. Both where, like Kodi and Dusty, in very good shape and well muscled, confirming her assumption that Mr. Simpson kept his dogs in very good shape. She could also tell a few things, simply by how they carried themselves.

"Is something wrong with your paw?" asked Sable, looking to Ralph. She looked at his front paw, the one she'd noticed this with. "Your claws are in a bit rough shape, looks like you had a hangnail at some point, very painful, but it looks like you've got a small infection where it was," she stated. "Nothing serious, it's just likely causing you a good deal of discomfort. But don't worry, running in the snow like sled dogs typically do should kill the infection, it'll be fine. But let your musher know about it, most mushers know how to treat it easily, there's nothing to worry about."

She then chuckled. "You can figure out a lot about a dog by looking them over, we all have tells that can be picked up on if you pay close attention you them," she stated, looking towards the other room were her former guests now were. "For example, I could tell your paw was hurting you because you lean primarally on your other front paw, favoring that one. It's not easy to see, I'm just taught, as a healer, how to detect such signs."

Ralph raised his paw up, revealing the swelling near his claw. “Yeah, I-I do. I’ve had it for a while now, but how did-” he stuttered, eyes wide. He was baffled, but Kirby was laughing it up.

“Haha! Ralph, she’s got your number! Do me next, do me!” He exclaimed.

The door opened, and Mr. Simpson’s figure appeared as he walked in from the darkness outside. In his hand was a brown paper sack. However, the strong scent emanating from it did little to conceal what was contained inside.

“I’m back!” He announced, as he kicked his heels against the ground, shaking the snow that had compacted itself inside of the treads of his boots free. “And, I brought you all a midnight snack!” He emptied the bag on the counter, a sizably long link of sausages pouring onto the cutting board.

“Hold that thought, Sable.” Kirby retracted what he just said, his interest more attuned the food in front of him.

“Give me just a second.” Mr. Simpson said as he removed his coat and boots. “Ohhhhhhhh-Kay! Now, where did Dusty and Kodi get off too?” He asked, noticing their missing presence. “I thought I told you to keep an eye on them!” He joked to Sable while he made his way to the living room. Down by the hearth, he saw Kodi and Dusty fast asleep. Dusty was curled up alongside him, her head resting along his back while Kodi’s ear twitched once lazily. Mr. Simpson smiled at the two, and more quiet than normal, made his way back to the kitchenette.

“They’re fast asleep.” He informed them, though they all knew before he did. “ Must have had quite a night. I’ll just save some for them for the morning.”

“He’s saving some for the morning? That must mean-” Ralph pondered out loud.

“You three, gather round!” He removed the plastic wrapping from several of the sausages before he placed them into separate dishes. Ralph and Kirby both gazed upwards, the aroma of the sausages tantalizing them to the point of nearly drooling.

“Hold up you two, budge on out of the way for a second so I can squeeze past.” Mr. Simpson sidled between the Kirby and Ralph, and placed a dish in front of Sable. “Ladies first. And, you are our guest.” He told her. He rubbed her head with his hand, and returned to the counter. “Don’t let this one near your dish. He’s got an appetite.” He pointed to Ralph while he fetched another dish from the cupboard above him.

“Me?” Ralph exclaimed, sounding surprised.
“Ha! It’s not like it’s never happened before!” Kirby ribbed him.
“That was one time, and it was an accident. I thought it was mine-”

“As a matter of fact, don’t let either of these two get close. They’re both ravenous when they want to be.”

Ralph snickered at Kirby’s dumbfounded expression, his own expression positively beaming when his trove of savory meat was laid before him by Mr. Simpson. Without hesitation, Ralph started chomping away.

Not five seconds later, Kirby also received his, and followed suit. He was chewing through a particularly sinewy piece when he noticed Sable. “Well? Are you going to eat?” He asked her.

Sable stepped forwards and started eating. It wasn't the first time she'd got to eat something like this, but it was a rare treat for a stray who never stole anything. She then looked Kirby over carefully. "Judging by the fact he gave you more food than Ralph, who is about your size if not slightly bigger, you must have a high food intake, which probably means you have a high metabalism," she explained. "Also, the way you're holding your head implies there's something painful with your neck, you probably strained it at some point in the day."

Sable turned back to her food for a second, eating a few more sausages, they were quite good. She swollowed, then looked to Kirby. "Make sure to support your neck well tonight so it can heal properly, you've got to let it recover or risk a more serious injury, but if you rest properly tonight, and try not to strain it too much tomarrow, you should be perfectly fine," she surmised, then looked around to Ralph. "And I still suggest showing your musher your toe, Ralph, while it'll heal properly on its own and cause no problem either way, it'll heal faster if you get some help from him."

Sable returned to her eating, despite being a stray, she looked in excellent physical condition, showing she practiced what she preached. "Being a healer is something I take pride in, you can trust me," she said, then looked to Kirby. She put a paw on his neck and felt around. "Ah, there's the problem, hold still," she said, then popped his neck, realigning it. "Better?"

“Wait! What are you – AH!” He felt his neck shift under the direction of Sable’s firm paws. For a moment, it stung sharply. But then, relief washed over him, his stiff neck suddenly feeling more flexible and better than ever. It not only felt normal, it felt good!

“Wow. Wo-o-ow.” Kirby sighed as he tilted his head all around, amazed at how easy it was. “Yeah, that's better. MUCH better. I didn’t even think about it, until you worked your magic. I thought it was just normal aches and pains that came with the job.” He admitted. At first, Kirby was listening half-heartedly to her. After all, Ralph’s hangnail had been bothering him for ages, and her doctor’s orders seemed so generic and simplistic. Impressed though he was by the speed of deducting Ralph’s ailment, he didn’t think too much of her guidance. However, her personal demonstration on him changed his mind.

“That was surprisingly good. How'd you - do that?” He asked her, still turning his head around. He decided it would be best to stop, lest he risk injury again, but it felt so surreal to have no aches that he could hardly resist.

Ralph, the witness to her action, lifted his head from his dish, several bites of food still remaining. Silently, he loped to the spindly chair that Mr. Simpson sat in, and uttered a soft whine. If her actions could change Kirby’s outlook and condition, he didn’t want to waste any time in following her advice to him. Mr. Simpson, nibbling slowly on his own piece of sausage, looked down to the source of the noise.

“What’s the matter, Ralph?” He asked him, looking at the dog’s food dish, a modest amount of food still residing within. He wasn’t asking for more food it seems. Ralph lifted his right paw, placing it on the side of Mr. Simpson bent knee. Curious, the musher gently grasped it, and examined it. As soon as he felt the swollen toe, and saw Ralph cringe, he got out of his seat and knelt down to look it over further.

“Oh goodness, no wonder you came to me. Did you tear your nail? It’s infected – come on, let me see if I can do anything.” He led Ralph to the restroom, where the first aid kit was placed. Ralph followed, determined to walk as tall and straight as he could. He didn’t want to appear like he needed help, so much as he simply wanted it.

As he vanished to the restroom, soft jostling sounding from Mr. Simpson investigating the medical kits’ contents, Kirby continued with Sable.

“However you did it, thanks. I’ll try to take it easy, but if we end up barreling over a cliff again, all bets are off!” He joked. “It’s a good thing you found Kodi and Dusty, or they found you, or however it happened. Something about a porcupine?” He asked, hoping to coax at least some of the elusive information about his friend’s evening about. “Did Dusty really get stuck in the nose?”

"As I said, I'm a healer, it's my job to do stuff like that, my friend," said Sable, finishing another bite. "And yes, poor girl did get a nose full of quills, nasty thing to happen to a poor girl," she continued, thinking about it. "Weird thing, I was walking along, just looking for herbs and heard her yelping," she explained, remembering the situation. "If she'd not gotten her nose in that porcupine, I'd never have even met them."

Sable gave it serious thought, thinking things over. "Strange how things work, isn't it? If it weren't for everything that had happened, then we'd never had met, and you and Ralph wouldn't be getting help for your injuries," she continued. "And if I hadn't fix up your neck, you might have hurt it worse on the return trip tomarrow, so who knows what would've happened. Just goes to show, small details about turning one way or the other, tripping on a rock or missing it, can have such a huge effect. I heard a man at the inn tell me about an old saying," she stated, taking a deep breath.

"For want of a nail, the shoe was lost;
For want of a shoe, the horse was lost;
For want of a horse, the rider was lost;
For want of a rider, the message was lost;
For want of the message, the battle was lost;
For want of a battle, the kingdom was lost,
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail." she recited, thinking it over.

"... Maybe I'm just overthinking things, but it's interesting to imagine how things could be different, we take such little actions for granted," said Sable. "We don't really appreciate the little details that lead to where we are now, only the big ones."

“Right…” Kirby nodded his head slowly. “Right, that’s absolutely right.” Kirby was lost, trying to decipher what she just told him. Something about battling messages with horseshoes. How would that work? He hoped it didn’t involve horseshoes being thrown at postal workers. Could dogs even play horseshoes? He had never tried, personally. Idioms aside, he thought he understood the rest of what she said.

“So, it’s kind of a… good thing that Dusty got stabbed?” He asked. “I mean, it’s not GOOD, but it’s like… in a roundabout way…” He was clearly struggling to properly word what he meant.

Ralph yelped loudly from the bathroom. “Shhhh… Shhhh… it’s alright! I know it hurts, but it’s for your own good. Let me get this on, and you can go finish your food, ok?” Mr. Simpson told him reassuringly.

Thankful for the distraction, Kirby quickly finished up what he was saying. “Long story short, it’s the little things that are often just as important as the bigger things, right? We just pay them less mind if the effects aren’t immediate.” It dawned on him as he was saying it. He felt more intelligent just saying it, it sounded so… philosophical.

“All done. We’ll see the vet in the morning, just to make sure. Go on and finish your food, Ralph.” The light turned off in the restroom, and Ralph walked out slowly. He smelled faintly of something pungent, but Kirby couldn’t place exactly what it was.

“It’s some rubbing alcohol.” Ralph told him, observing Kirby sniffing the air profusely. “It’s supposed to make it heal better, but all it did was hurt it more! I hope Dusty doesn’t see this.” He raised his paw to show Kirby and Sable. It was now adorned in a shabby bandage that Mr. Simpson had applied. He couldn't imagine how much teasing he would get about it now. Not wanting to possibly offend Sable and her advice with his complaining, he mentioned. “But, I’m sure it’s for my own good, like you and he said.”

He walked gingerly to his food dish, eating the rest of his meat.

“So, Sable, you’ll be staying with us tonight, right? You said you lived out in a cave, how long has it been since you’ve slept by a nice warm fireplace?” Kirby asked like a salesman trying to ply hard earned money from a reluctant customer. “Follow me, you can find yourself a comfortable spot.” He led her down the hallway, into the living room basking in an orange glow from the embers kindling in the fireplace. “So, take your pick.” He whispered, mindful of Kodi and Dusty sleeping nearby. He softly sprang upwards onto a basket-like chair, a deep blue cushion providing a thick padding.

Sable looked to Ralph. "I'm sure it'll help. Infections like that normally aren't a problem, but it's better safe than sorry, I hope you recover quickly."

Sable then followed Kirby and looked around, settling for the simplest bed she could find. She looked at Dusty and Kodi sleeping soundly together, it was sweet, but did bring back some unpleasent memories of when she herself had had a lover... It had unfortunately ended quite sour. She looked to Kirby with a wide yawn. "Sometimes I stay at the inn, that's where I hear a lot of things. It's fun to listen to humans, they tell such interesting stories. And even if we're so different from them, that knowledge has it's value to us," she whispered, then curled up on the simple blanket she'd found near the fire.

"Anyway, I wish you a good night's sleep, and remember, support your neck," she whispered, giving a smile and laying her head down. "Goodnight..." she said, letting herself descend into sleep.

The sun came up on the sleepy little town, down quite a ways from Nome. White Mountain, still recovering from the scares of the night before seemed eerily quiet. A tension resided in the air, a tension that lacked resolution. It seemed most unbefitting for a day warranting celebration; it was Christmas Eve. Only thing was, it didn’t feel like in the slightest.

The city’s youth began the day as the normally did, by going to convene with their friends and discuss the holidays. Not all of them did. Many parents were concerned about how safe their children might be. There were rumors of a massive beast that had attacked the night before, after all. What responsible parent would allow their children to run free and easy when something so dangerous could be lurking around the corner? Much to the contrary of the holiday spirit, the mood in the town could best be described as oppressive.

Behind the post office, Mr. Simpson led his sled dog Ralph outside. He made sure to be quiet; he didn’t want to wake his other dogs. They needed their rest, as the night before had been especially taxing too. Besides, how were they going to get home to their families if his dogs were too tired to stand up straight? Ralph had begrudgingly followed Mr. Simpson to meet the local veterinarian, to have his shoddily bandaged paw inspected more thoroughly. Mr. Simpson knew that the office would probably be closed, but he hoped that the vet would be willing to just see Ralph for a moment at his home. Sharing a passion for dogs, they were both on good terms with each other. That, and it was Christmas.

In the living room, four other dogs lay. Closest to the blackened fireplace were Dusty and Kodi, Dusty nestled closely to Kodi, her head resting along his back. Sable was curled into a ball, notable separate from the rest of the group. Beneath her was a soft beige carpet, much different than the cave floors she was used to. On the floor in front of a basket-woven chair, a large brown dog, Kirby, lay on the ground in a most peculiar arrangement. His front legs were running parallel to the floor to along his side, his legs splayed out behind him. Kirby’s head was resting atop a large blue pillow that he had removed from the chair behind him.

He grumbled softly until he awoke. He rolled onto his back, and rolled over again until he was upright. He sat up, yawning as he did so. Taking note of the other sleeping canines, he crept out of the living room into the hallway serving as an access point for every other important room in the building.

“…Can’t believe they are still sleeping. Must have had some night…” he muttered to himself as he licked some water out of his dish. After he had wet his whistle with water, he roved over to the food dishes lining the wall. He noted that two of them had sausage in it, presumably for Kodi and Dusty. Kirby was tempted for just a piece or two from each, but decided against it. One of the other dishes had already been emptied. Was it Ralph’s? Kirby hadn’t seen him this morning, maybe he and Mr. Simpson (also absent) had left to the vet already. His owner’s boots and coat were missing from the rack nearest the door, so that was probably it.

He munched on his food, as quietly as he could. Their dog food was a little on the stale side; the bag was probably the same one that was here when they used the residence last year. Kirby didn’t care, he was still hungry. Maybe Sable’s talk of his meta-whatever it was being faster than the others had truth to it. He laughed to himself, and noticed movement from the corner of his eye as he was shaking his head.

“Sable?” he asked her. “Good morning. Did you sleep well? I didn’t wake you, did I?” He lowered his voice noticeably on the last question, remembering that Kodi and Dusty were still asleep.

Sable slowly woke up, looking around the room. She gave a yawn, getting up and stretching. She noticed two of her hosts had already left. It didn't surprise her, sled dogs were probably more likely to get up early than she was. Living alone gave her that luxary. But she could also tell Kodi and Dusty were worn out, and given the day they'd told her they'd had the day before, they deserved a good sleep.

Sable slowly stood up and walked out into the room were Kirby waited. She found an extra water bowl set out for her and drank from it before turning to Kirby. "Goodmorning, Kirby," she said, giving a friendly tailwag. "No, you didn't wake me, I slept very well, thank you for asking." She then looked around, seeing no sign of the other dog who'd already woke up, Ralph she believed his name was. She didn't see him anywhere, but saw an empty foodbowl and that the musher's gear was gone. IT didn't take much thinking to realize he'd taken him to the vet for her infected foot.

She then looked back to Kirby. "So, did you sleep well? Your neck feel better?"

“I slept pretty well, actually.” Kirby replied. He didn’t even notice his neck, and had forgotten about it until she reminded him. “I don’t know that my neck feels better after what you did yesterday, but it certainly doesn’t hurt or anything. I guess that’s about as ‘better’ as you can get, right?”

He looked down at his food dish, nearly emptied. Next to it, another bowl was filled with dog food. Mr. Simpson must have had it out for her, since Kodi and Dusty’s clearly had the sausages in them. “Hungry?” He asked. “I don’t know what you normally eat, but this stuff here isn’t half bad. It’s supposed to be good for you.”

He looked enviously again at his teammates’ meaty bowls. “How rude of those two, to invite you over and sleep away your entire visit. I don’t know what they’d do without me.” He commented.

In the next room, Kodi listened. He had been awake for a time, but didn’t want to move. His body was sore all over, and his head ached from the beating it received last night. At least when he was laying down, Dusty resting with him, he was comfortable. He focused on her breathing, a soft and steady rhythm. There was something inherently relaxing about listening to it.

But Kirby had a point. As quietly as Kodi could muster while still being audible, Kodi whispered to the husky next to, and partially on top of, him. He didn’t want to wake her if she was still asleep, and Kodi personally wouldn’t mind snagging a few extra minutes of downtime. It seemed a precious commodity that he fully intended to savor.

"Dusty? You awake?"

"It's alright," said Sable, smiling as she headed over to her foodbowl, looking at it. She wasn't used to eating dogfood, but she was perfectly fine with it. "I'm used to hunting for my food to be honest," she replied, giving a smile. "And occasionally the inn owner gives me something to eat, but not all the time. Normally I have to kill for food, guess that's why I was lucky to be part wolf..." she said, eating a little bit.

She then looked to Kirby. "There's a famious wolfdog in Nome, where you're all from, Balto, right?" she asked, curious, she knew about Balto, but she wanted to see something else. "Saved the entire town during a disease outbreak, now that's an impressive act... People are right to call him a hero."

----------------

Dusty gave a wide yawn, looking over at him with a smile. "Morning, Kodi," she said, giving him a nuzzle and lick on the nose. Truth be told, she'd been awake as well for just a little bit, but thought Kodi had needed rest, unknowing he'd been awake longer than her. That and she just felt good sleeping so close to him, smelling his scent, hearing his heart beat. It was reassuring.

Dusty slowly got up and stretched. "Sleep well?" she asked, feeling rather good herself after a goodnight's sleep. "Surprisingly, I didn't have one dream about a monster or anything..."

“A wolfdog? You?” Kirby asked incredulously. He examined her closely. “Sorry for staring, but are you sure? You don’t look like it.” He didn’t know why he asked her that, since she would probably know it better than anyone what her heritage was. Besides, Kodi was technically part wolf too, as Kirby often forgot, and Kirby could hardly tell with him either. Maybe his perception wasn’t the most reliable for such matters.

“Speaking of which, you know Kodi…” his voice got low. “Did you know that he’s part wolf too?” He told her impressively, as though she would be surprised by the news.

“Yeah, I slept fine.” Kodi said hurriedly. As quiet as Kirby thought he was, noise travelled far in the small house. Sable already knew that he was part wolf, he’d told her so himself. But what he didn’t mention for his own reasons, was who his father was. She appeared to already know about Balto and his heroics, and seemed to appreciate it, which was a welcome change from how the strays mocked him for it. However, the way the conversation was being steered, Kirby would end up telling Kodi’s own life story for a bit of breakfast conversation.

Kodi wanted to get up and tell Kirby to stop right there. If Kodi felt like revealing who he was related to, then he could do it himself. What right did Kirby have? It wasn’t the first time, regrettably, that Kirby had tried to use Kodi’s ancestry to further his own ingratiation to others, his “fame by association.” But then… what was the point of stopping him? Aside from disrupting the heavenly conditions that Dusty had rendered upon him, Kodi was sure that causing a scene would do him no good, and just make things for Sable awkward. There was no point in lying to her. Or concealing the truth, whatever the difference was.

Besides, he thought to himself, his father WAS a hero. He should be proud of his parentage, not trying to hide it. So what was it about others knowing it that had only just started to bother him so much? Not too long ago, he would stand at the top of Grizzly Rock and shout for the world to hear that he was the son of the great Balto. What had changed? Was it because his father yelled at him, spurning his very own son?

No, that wasn’t it. Dusty had already told him that that was a mistake, and he believed her. Everyone gets angry sometimes. For some reason, Dusty seemed intrinsically linked to his newfound feelings for his father’s namesake. But… why?

Kodi took a deep breath, and slowed down. “I mean… I slept great. Really, really, great.” He told her with a relaxed tone. He tried to return her affectionate gestures, but she was positioned perpendicular to him, and with her chin resting on his shoulders, it was impossible for his head to look at hers without upsetting the position they were in. It didn’t stop him from trying. He vainly tried twisting his head over his shoulder to meet with hers, to little success. “That’s not fair!” He laughed. Then, his ears perked as his prediction came true. Unconsciously, his ears sagged just slightly at Kirby’s voice.

“Well, I’m sure you could tell that he was a wolfdog. You’re good at analyzing things like that, I bet you could spot it a mile away.” Kirby continued. He inhaled deeply, and spoke his next line with such bravado. “But, did you know that you’ve been speaking to son of the great Balto when you spoke with Kodi? Not something you get to do every day, is it?” He stood up tall, his neck looking positively strained from how high he was holding it.

“Now, his old man taught him some things sure, but when it comes to mail-running… Well, let’s just say that I was lead dog before Kodi was. Taught him everything he knows. Got him where he was now, I did.”

Kodi rolled his eyes. It was painful listening to Kirby boast so much, probably for all involved.

“Well, Dusty, what do you say we get up and stop him before he completely skews everything else that Sable knows about us? Next thing you'll know, you'll become his half sister that he rescued from the grasp of a tribe of bull moose.” He joked to the husky.

"I actually figured that Kodi was related to Balto. A wolfdog from Nome, home of the famious Balto, and NOT being related to him is rather unlikely. Wolfdogs aren't all that common, particularally in the same town, unless they're somehow related," said Sable, thinking about it. She watched Kirby as he boasted. "Oh really?" she asked when he boasted about having taught Kodi how to be a sled dog. "Then I'm sure you can tell me the first lesson you taught him on that subject."

Dusty gave a snicker when Sable called his bluff. "Do you think Sable's noticed Kirby's left ear twitches when he lies?" she asked. "She's good at stuff like that, eitherway, I can't wait to see how Kirby tries to get himself out of that one..." she said, in truth, Balto had been the one to teach Kodi everything he knew. Even if he'd only ran a sled dog team once or twice, Balto had watched sled dogs and their training all his life, enough to know how to do it himself. "Kind of serves him right, though, trying to take credit for something he didn't do."

Kirby looked like he had been punched in the gut. Firstly, his revelation about Balto wasn’t so much a revelation as it was a simple confirmation. Secondly, her request for his first lesson was a mite difficult for him to fulfill. Part of the reason Kodi was elected to lead was because he had excelled so quickly, likely because of his father’s teachings. Truthfully, Kirby didn’t have a whole lot to show for his supposed tutelage. The one thing he tried to teach Kodi to do was relax, and that went over about as well as a lead balloon.

He shook his head. “I’ve been hearing a lot about wolf dogs lately. You, Kodi, Balto… ah nevermind.” Kirby stretched his shoulders as though he were preparing for a bout with Ralph. “You want to know what I taught Kodi, huh? It’s a bit basic, but you have to have to start somewhere.” He leaned in close, and with a heaping helping of melodrama, whispered to Sable. “I showed him… the ropes.”

“Yes, quite literally, I showed him the ropes. If I didn’t show him which set of ropes were his in our sled formation, he wouldn’t know where he was supposed to go.” He paused for a moment, looking above Sable as though he were thinking hard about what he said. “Well, it wasn’t really ‘rope’ as much as it was his harness, but they are close enough, right. Right?”

“Don’t hurt yourself thinking too much on it, Kirby.” Said a voice from the end of the hallway.

“Kodi!” Kirby laughed nervously. “What great timing, we were just talking about you!”

Yawning as he padded his way down the hallway, the wood’s firm coolness a sharp contrast to the warm carpet of the living room. The old house had a draft coming in from somewhere; Kodi didn’t know where, but it was much too noticeable after how pleasantly cozy the living room was. He was sure that Dusty’s body heat was no small contributor. “So I heard. Your inside voice could use some work.”

Kirby shrugged. “I’m a dog, I’m expected to be loud aren’t I? Sorry if I said anything to offend you, it was mostly nice stuff, I swear.”

Kodi laughed, and brushed it off. “Don’t worry about it. You were right about the harness. I was so nervous, I probably would have tangled it after setting one paw through it!” He was in a very good mood for some strange reason. He saw the two food dishes behind Kirby and Sable, both filled with chunks of mouth-watering scented sausages. Maybe that had something to do with it?

He wove around beside them, sampling a piece. It tasted just as delectably as it smelled. Resisting the temptation to devour it (he was surprised it was still there at all, given Kirby and Ralph’s reckless appetites), he turned around and spoke to Sable.

“Sorry for leaving you with Ralph and Kirby so early last night… Me and Dusty were both beat.” Kodi felt his head twinge at the unintentionally fitting comment. “No offense, Kirby.”

Kirby raised and waved his paw dismissively, a trademark of his meaning “not a problem.”

Kodi continued, a bit more seriously than before. “So… I guess you heard about my dad, huh? The great Balto…” What would Sable think of him now, he wondered. Would she look at how panicky and nervous he was, and say “Are you really the son of Balto? You don’t seem that heroic to me.” Would she want to watch him run, see if he was as fast as his legendary father? This was part of the reason Kodi didn’t want to tell her about his parentage. Looks like the cat, or rather, wolf, was out of the bag.

Dusty walked out, giving a small shiver at the change in temp. It wasn't pleasent really, but she didn't mind. She was used to the cold like any sled dog would be. She set down and tasted the delicious meat provided by their musher. It was a very nice treat. "It was nice of Mr. Simpson to give this to us."

Sable looked up fro her meal, smiling to Kodi. "Yes, Kirby told me about that," she said, thinking. "But it really doesn't change what I think of YOU. It'd be rather arragont of me to judge you simply because of who your father is, that's really not fair. Wasn't Balto originally judged based on who one of his parents were? That his parent was a wolf? That was most certainly not fair. It isn't fair to expect you to save a town or the like just because your father did. It's simply an unfair assumption."

Dusty nodded simply. "She's right, look at my dad, he was a major dirt bag, I'm nothing like him," she added. "And my mother was an alright sleddog, but I'm not much like her either. So I kind of agree."

Sable nodded. "Indeed, sure, it's a nice fact and something to be proud of, but who your parents are shouldn't define you or be how you define someone else," she continued, smiling lightly. "Do you agree?"
