Chris started to growl.
"No, no, NO! Listen to me! We follow the stream for another few days, but then we will lead us to the mountains and will go underground for awhile, so we will have to cross the mountains, and if you are leading us, we will get lost!"

"Listen, I'm just trying to say that you are not serious enough to be leading us. You have a lot of growing up to do before you begin making the correct decisions all the time. Sometimes it just makes me so mad," Chris said with a growl in his voice.
"You can lead by following the river north, but you better let me take over again once we reach the land humans own, or you'll be in big trouble before you can even lift a paw."

Jory looked at Chris quizzically.
"What's a human?"

Chris scoffed.
"They are big, ugly animals with no fur. They are really smart though and wear these weird things on their bodies, and they build big, sometimes scare things.

Jory whimpered.
"Are they mean?"

Chris shook his head.
"Some are, but many are nice. It's best to stay away from them, though. You spend too long with humans, eventually something will go wrong. Trust me."

"fine fine you lead us but still you better know a lot of good spots to eat and such so we can live out in this place" he stopped letting chris overtake him "and enough talk of humans lets just try get to our new home first"

"Hey Colin, here's an idea. Why don't we all forget who's leading and just get there," Chris replied in a reasonable tone. Then his face suddenly hardened and he pawed the blue collar he still had hanging around his neck. "And I'm not going to forget about the humans. We're gonna come across them eventually, and you'll have to quit being so cocky Colin or they will mess you up.

Jory whimpered louder. "I thought you said that many of them are nice."

Chris smiled coolly. "Nice to dogs, which is what I mostly am."

Chris thought for a moment, then spoke.
"Stay hidden, I guess, and wait until they're gone."

"Why can't we just find a place where there are no humans?" Jory asked softly.

Chris thought for a moment.
"That would be nice, but we're bound to run into humans eventually. We might as well follow the stream to we don't get lost."

Chris pondered for a moment.
"I dunno. Maybe find a girl and raise a family. What about you?"

"Seriously? How would that be fun? I've lived like that after I escaped the humans, and it was a terrible life. What's the point if you don't have friends?"

Jory nodded.
"I don't think I'd get very far being alone."

Jory shook his head.
"I don't know. I just want to live life day to day, not thinking about what's going to happen tomorrow or the day after that."
