Balto nodded. "Believe me, I don't want to leave my family." he said. "But I do want my pups to outlive me, its not natural for the parent to outlive his child, as you can understand."
"Well I thought Aleu looked cool and you said I look like her." said Ana, wagging her tail. She was getting tired from pulling the sled though.

"Yes, and that is a terrible tragedy," Scout said. "I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy."
"Well, I;m just stating facts," Kodi said. He noticed Ana slowly down a little and thought she looked kinda worn out. "Hey, do you want Maria to take over for a little while?"
"Me?" Maria said, hearing her name pop up in the cnversation. "You want me to pull a sled?"

Balto heard Kodi's question. "Do you Ana? If so, we can stop and you can switch with your sister."
Ana nodded, panting. "Yeah, I'm beat."

Scout nodded and slowed the team to a stop.
Maria trotted up to Kodi and her father. "Are you sure I should pull a sled?" she asked.

"Do you want to?" asked Balto. "I'd prefer if everyone took a turn." he said but we need to rest a bit so Ana can cool down."

Ana slipped out of her harness and collasped, panting. "I'm tired."
Balto nodded. "If you don't want to, Kodi can take the next run, he's used to this."

"No, no, I can do it," Maria said, not wanting to seem like the weak one.
"You'll get used to it if you ever become a sled dog," Kodi said. "And I think that someday soon, you could get a spot on the mail team."

"Alright but no pressure." said Balto, smiling.
Ana nodded. She ate some snow, she was thirsty. "How long did it take you to get used to it?"

Maria nodded, her nerves still clear on her face.
"A few months, I think," Kodi said. "But I did a lot of training, well, running a ton anyways."

"You'll do fine." said Balto, trying to reassure her. "Just pace your breathing, breath out when you're front paws hit the ground and breath in between then and the next time."
"I don't think its for me." said Ana. "I'm a housedog."

Maria nodded. "Right, I can do this," she muttered mostly to herself.
"I;m just saying you have potential," Kodi said. "I didn't say you had to take it. But if you ever change your mind, just tell me."

"But first, we let Ana recover." said Balto.
Ana nodded, still tired. "I don't think I paced myself too well." she admited.

"Yes, of course," Maria agreed.
"Well, now you know to pace yourself for next time," Kodi said, "Practice is all about making mistakes and fixing them next time around."

Ana licked Kodi's nose. "I know but no one told me to."
