Rue ran, the fire making her eyes burn, the smoke sending her into wracking coughing fits.

Nook gradually began to slow down, and finally he just stopped, coughing up blood. "I can't do it!" he yelled ahead. "You guys go, I'll catch up with ya!" But the fire was following close behind them.

Rue shook her head, coughing too much to speak. She instead picked him up in her mouth, leaving him dangling an inch off the soot-soaked ground, dangling like a helpless kit. She somehow managed to keep up her coughing fit through Nook, and continued running, her violet eyes stinging as the smok grew thicker. Suddenly, the fire was surrounding them, the opening gone. She stopped, horrified, Nook tumbling from her mouth, her sides heaving from her labored breathing and exertion. She stared at the threatening flames, backing away slightly.

Vetch was not coughing as much as Rue, but he could feel his fangs turning red hot, like a hot plate. He spotted Rue nearly not being able to breathe, but through the walls of flame there was a purple glow. A window! Vetch tapped Rue and yelled, "Follow me and do as I do!" Then jumped right through the window, the rubbery glass panels popping out. Vetch was out.

Nook gathered up all his strength and shook his head around, then got his game face on. He still was weak from his tiny self being engulfed in smoke. He pounced towards the window, soaring towards freedom.

But it was too much for him. He fell short, landing in the pit of fire.

Vetch watched in horror, but could do nothing. "Come on, Rue!" he yelled.

Rue watched as Nook fell into the flames, her eyes wider, tears blurring her vision more. But she steeled herself and leapt, tears escaping from her eyes as she landed. "Nook," she said, more of to herself, looking back, still coughing.

Vetch frantically looked through the flames, searching for his friend. His brother. But there was nothing. He felt tears cut through the ashes caked on his fur.

Suddenly, Nook appeared through the window, but he wasn't moving. He looked as if he had been thrown out the opening. His bright orange and white fur was covered in soot, and his right ear was nearly burned completely off. His paws were barbecued, and his tail was missing patches of fur. Then, a black, scaly hand reached through the window, trying to grip the ground and pull itself up.

Rue looked at the hand blankly, her gaze drawn away from her small and burnt friend. She pulled herself out of the sorrowful reverie, running to the window to see what the hand was connected to, tears still running down her face.

There hung Darryl, trying to hold on to the side of the window for dear life. "Little help here?" he asked impatiently, looking down at the flames below him.

Vetch nudged Nook with his nose, not expecting him to move anyways. He squeezed his eyes shut, forcing more tears out.

Rue pulled him up, gripping his hand gently with her sharp teeth. He was soon out of reach from the flickering flames. She turned away from Darryl to see the unmoving Nook, and more tears blurred her vision as she walked over to him. She nudged his fur softly, her violet eyes sad. "Nook," she said again, even softer, barely audible.

"I'm sorry." whispered Darryl, biting his lip. "I was too slow." Then, an idea popped into his thoughtstream. "I know who might be able to fix him up! And this guy's healed creatures like Nook; on the verge of death."

"Can you take us to him?" Vetch rasped through swallowed tears.

'Can you?" Rue asked, echoing Vetch. "How far? We need to hurry," she said, swallowing tears and taring her gaze away from Nook's still body.

"Yeah, come on." called Darryl, carefully picking up Nook and then running in the direction of the doctor. While running, he panted and said through breaths, "His name is Dr. Drinstein. He's studied medicine and rehabilitation for as long as I can remember, and he can bring around even the sickest creatures you've ever seen."

Rue nodded, loooking at Nook. What if it was too late for him? She was stricken for a moment by that thought, and faltered slightly. SHe shook it off, regaining her smooth strides. 'How far is he?" she asked.
