"Mike spoke while dragging the buck in his mouth.
"D'you think...we should wake up Helga?"
They reached the nook and dropped the buck. It was of decent size. The meat would probably last them for several days.

Mike went over to the sleeping vixen and tapped her on the shoulder.
"Helga, wake up for a moment. We've got dinner!"
Helga stired.
"Mike, not now. I'm trying to sleep here. There should be plenty left for me tomorrow."
Dejectedly, Mike went back ofer to Jamie and started eating.
"Helga doesn't want to get up. Guess we have to save her some meat."

"That'll be easy for me, I already ate my part of the buck." She said and yawned. She went over to where she was going to sleep for the night and slept, " Good night Mike." She said and drifted off to sleep.

Mike followed soon after her. He chose a spot of ground right next to Jamie and lied down, snuggling against her furry body. A slow smile crept across his face. Life was good. So good.

After he had fallen asleep, she opened one eye and smiled. She scooted closer to him and stopped. She yawned and fell asleep.

The new day greeted the three friends with birdsong. The sky was a clear blue with small white puff balls. Mike got up and stretched. After having a quick bite to eat off the Buck's carcass, he went to wake the others. He was about to wake Helga, when he noticed that she was unusually still. He put an ear to her chest. Her breathing was slow and pained, gasping as if each breath was her last.
Mike ran to Jamie and non too gently shook her awake. He was talking so fast, he could barely understand himself.
"Helga...she...i mean...Helga...breathing...not...good...help!"

Jamie widely opened her eyes and understood what he said and ran over to where she was and then she quickly shook her awake but she wouldn't get up. She flipped Helga onto her back and started to push her chest with her paws and she finally woke up and it was a relief Jamie.

Helga didn't look well at all. Her body was limp, her ears drooped, and her eyes were hazy. She tried to speak, and when she could finally form a legitimate sentence, it was in a hoarse whisper.
"You said there was lead...In the water...The abyss...Correct?"
Mike sat beside her, tears running down his face.
"No Helga you did. Why are you asking."
Helga took a moment before beginning again.
"When animals drink tainted water, they get sick. When they drink a lot of tainted water they die. when the rope snapped, I swollowed many mouthfuls of the water."
"No, but Helga, see we all drank the water. Me and Jamie are alright. You will be, too."
Helga turned to Jamie.
"Darling, have I told you that you and Mike are meant for each other? You will be great mates one day."
helga stopped again, and shuddered.

Mike let Jamie lick his tears away, but more kept flowing.
"Why are you telling us these things Helga?"
My friends, I believe my time has come. I'm old. I've led a full life."
Thats when Mike got angry. He stood erect, his fur bristling.
"Don't say that! You've stared death in the eye before, but you fought. You fought and won. You can do it again. For us!"
Helga just smiled warmly.
"I have no more energy to fight, Mike. You both have been the best friends I could ever ask for, and it's been an honor to travel with you...Mike, please don't be upset. You need to be strong for the next part of your journey."
Mike nodded, letting the news sink in.
"and Jamie, you must be strong, too. Be a leader, but don't let the power get to your head."
Helga let out another shudder.
"Good bye my friends. My time has come."
With that, the old Vixen Helga's eyes glazed over and they closed for the last time, looking like she went into a gentle sleep.

Jamie nodded and nuzzled her before she died and she cried for just a minute not letting them get hold of her. She licked Mike's tears completely away calming him down. She then nuzzled him.

Mike and Jamie sat for what seemed like an eternity, quietly reflecting what the Vixen had told them on her death bed.
Mike nodded then said in a whisper, "We should give her a proper burial. She would have liked in that way."

She nodded and said, " Yeah. I will go dig for her." She said and dug as she cried over the loss of a loved one. When she went back into the den, she said, " Ok. It's ready." She said.

Mike assisted Jamie in slowelt carrying the vixen to her grave, then while she was covering the grave up, he carved a memorial on a tree next to it with his claw. It read:
Helga
May our journey not end in sadness.
Your heart will be with us forever
and will guide us to our destiny.
