Naturally, I get blamed. This topic may as well be locked. But thank you Maya, thats precisely where I was getting at, I wasn't "flaming" anyone.
But since I'm encouraged:
Quote: she's the one who posted on here. I didn't ask her to.
Kinda contradicting to your topic, there, isn't it, chum?
And no. I didnt start anything either.

It also helps if you write about something people would actually want to read. If you notice that your fics are being read but not commented on, then maybe people think it's boring. And the REALLY courteous ones would keep their mouths shut if they didn't like something.
I've never read any of your fics, but try going back to see if you yourself can pick stuff out that needs to be changed so that more people will read. Ask yourself if your fics are too long. Ask yourself if your fics use good grammer. Ask yourself if your fic is too hard to read (meaning small font, or no indents or paragraphs or too long paragraphs). Start thinking like someone else and see if your fic is too boring. Whichever. It doesn't matter.
But complaining about getting few comments is stupid and it's not going to get you more. People aren't going to comment just because you tell them to read something, nor are people going to read something that's out there for their own OPTIONS of reading. If they had to comment on everything they read, than that would just defeat the purpose of free will now wouldn't it? I agree with the majority of what you've said, Cat, including the purpose of free will, good grammer, and the near uselessness of 'complaining' about getting few comments. However, I should hope that the length of a fanfic would not deter potential readers. In addition, I think that the writer should first consider what he/she wants to write about. If it interests him/her, he/she should write it. He/she should write with a mind toward the younger readers, but comments should not be the main concern. To quote my English teacher: "If you write to impress, you will always fail, but if you write to express, you will always suceed." Teal, I understand completely what you are saying, and let me assure you that you and Purdy are not alone. I started out with one fic and no comments for months. I still have fics that few people review. But I don't let it get me down. Keep writing, and they will come. -LWf
Very eloquently said, Lone Wolf! There is SO MUCH of this generation that cannot seem to simply READ. Not that they cannot, but they do not. Are teenagers and college kids SO tied to the internet and instant gratification that they cannot simply sit down with a good book (or a long story) and read?
Granted, a poorly-constructed work, with run-on sentences, bad (or no) punctuation, bad spelling, and bad sentence and paragraph construction (and poor use of theme, plot, plot devices, characters, etc.) can make a story tedious and laborious (and frustrating) to read. And that IS a big problem with many fan fictions posted here. But a WELL-written one can be very engaging and entertaining!
Still, I have never understood this penchant, among the current younger generation, to fuss over reading something that is more than a couple of paragraphs long. It's laziness, and it's impatience. And it's dumb. People who act like that are missing out on some really good literature...even that written by amateurs (and there's nothing wrong with that kind).

pyh...even if I don't get comments I'm too lazy to even ask anything, ppls options and its 'cause of my grammar which ain't the world's best one xD I sux at English mates, that's why I've been thinking of more another things such as German and Swedish I need to write L. Anyway hanging in BS is easy...because most of USA,English and those who have main language as English can not write as well as many others do...you can come from France and write better than a English guy or girl.
Anyway Freedom and USA is Democracy one xD Remember it. Like Lonewolf's teacher said that is very true...

Cat I was making it clear to Suka that this topic was not made simply to make another opportunity to fight with you. I kinda wish you'd stay out of stuff that I do because every time you don't, there's a fight or argument or whatever. I think that the main reason you posted on here was because you knew there was such bad blood between us. I did NOT post this merely to draw you in and fight. ANYONE who's thought that before, please think otherwise. and anyone who's thought that this is a "promo" for me and Purdy also, PLEASE think otherwise because that is not the reason I made this. I've said that over and over and no one seems to be listening to me.

I do that all the time, there's nothing wrong with it. Some people would rather read a fanfic than comment it. At least be thankful that people are reading your stories...they don't always have to comment them.
Teal wrote: No I'm not saying there should be a rule I'm just stating that it would be a lot better if people left feedback on what they read. again, THIS IS NOT A PROMOTIONAL TOPIC FOR MINE OR PURDY'S FICS. I PROMISE it isn't. but I'm sure other people feel the same way we do. it's discouraging to see that people look at your story and you have no idea what they think! I know that feeling, but I just leave it alone. You're not always going to get a lot of comments for every fic you write. It takes time, and after people begin to respect you as a writer, you'll get more comments. Personally, I'd rather have a few comments that contain advice than millions of comments that say "OMG I LOVED IT". Teal wrote: COME ON you guys don't get what I'm saying! I'M NOT COMPLAINING! PLEASE understand that. I told you THREE TIMES that THIS IS NOT A PROMOTIONAL FOR ME OR ANYBODY ELSE IN PARTICULAR! PLEASE stop putting words in my mouth I'm simply stating that it's common courtesy to post a reply when you read something! I'm not DEMANDING you to do anything!! Please stop thinking that because OBVIOUSLY you guys didn't listen to me when I said that I'm not saying there should be a rule I just thought that people would want to be nice to others and post replies I'M NOT DEMANDING ANYTHING. Actually READ what I'm saying and not just skim over it okay???? Actually, to me it also seemed like you were complaining...making a topic about something that annoys you is classified as complaining. Think about it; you posted a topic that said "I hate it when people read fanfics but don't leave comments. That's rude, it's common courtesy to let the author know what you think." That, my friend, is complaining. Teal wrote: THIS IS NOT A PROMOTIONAL FOR ME OR ANYBODY ELSE IN PARTICULAR! Uh... In your first post, you clearly mentioned yours and Purdys' names. That does seem like a promo to me. If you would broaden your first post and refer to other people rather than yourself and Purdy, maybe people wouldn't be accusing you of such things. Teal wrote: I didn't start it Suka, she's the one who posted on here. I didn't ask her to. and she obviously doesn't WANT me to have good intentions with this topic. As hard as it is I'm gonna ignore her. Yes, actually, she did. You're complaining about people not reading what you say, but did you really read what Cat first said to you? catwhohas14tails wrote: Yes, comments are nice. But one shouldn't complain about it. She was giving you advice, and you took it as something offensive. That's probably how this started between you two again; you misinterpreted what she said to you, and now we're involved in another fight.
Next time, if you're going to make another topic like this, be careful what you say and how you say it so that people will actually consider what you're saying rather than getting upset.

You know what? I often make topics that hardly anyone answer to. It's something you can't do anything about, and it's the same for the fanfics. Sometimes people are interested and answer, sometimes they don't.
Also, I think that many people here check the topics but don't take the time for reading the fanfics. I know I don't have time for this, so it's a bit difficult to comment something you don't have read...

And sometimes people can't think of a logical response, and it winds being a flame war or maybe even a dispute.

Ok, first off, if you're expecting people to comment, YOU'RE EXPECTING THEM TO COMMENT. And that's exactly what I did. The first I posted something in this particular forum post was ADVICE. Why you took it offensively, I have no idea, but I'm thinking YOU'RE the one wanting to start the fight, either that or you think everyone else ALWAYS wants to start a fight with you.
I did not flame the crap out of you, you just think I comment on your crap because I'm trying to stirr something up. Why is it always ME wanting to start a fight??? Can't I give an opinion on this site anymore? Can't I give helpful advice, author to author? Or are those not allowed either? Nope, as long as someone THINKS its a flame, it's a flame. And naturally you blame ME for starting stuff, when you should be a MAN about this crap and not point fingers at those trying to help you!
Yeah, I said I was done helping people on this site, but I go to help YOU, and you complain some more? You ask "why" you're told "why" and you take offense? What's wrong with this picture? You say you're not complaining, but that's what you're doing. I'm not flaming you, I'm telling it like it is! A wise man doesn't need advice, Teal, and a fool doesn't take it!
If you want people to think differently about you, you best find a good way to do it. I'm tired of getting blamed for crap I didn't even commit.
P.S. Complaining is about "me" while ranting is about "you." I've read more forms of "me" if your forum, so it IS classified as complaining. It's sad, but it's true.

Cat you don't understand what I'm asking! if I was asking people why they didn't comment on MY fic, then yes I probably would have taken your advice. But you don't even understand the subject! I suggest you make the subject clear for yourself (and don't blame me because I THOROUGHLY explained my purpose in this topic at the START) before you post any further. you're ingoring the fact that I stated SEVERAL times at the beginning of this thread that I'm not griping about myself.

I agree, GreyWolf, this is quite enough!
Cat, thank you for trying to give advice, but you needn't agrivate the situation by filling this topic with back-and-forth arguing. Save that for PMs, or better yet, avoid it all together.
And Teal, the same to you.
I apologize, but there's really no other way to say that.
If you honestly must continue this discussion, do so thru PMs.
I swear, some of you remind me of my younger siblings...
Topic locked to prevent further...disagreements.
